I wouldn't to be honest. On a contending team, that 2nd is more of a 3rd rounder anyway. If a contender offers 2 2nd round picks, then I listen.

At 5 million, even tough he won't probably repeat these numbers in the next 3 years, he won't hurt us anyway

But for real, if they somehow manage to pull off Misa, I figure he'd actually slide to LW and Malkin would stay at center. Logic would tell me to put Malkin and Misa together, but I think we all know it would be Misa-Crosby-Rust. At that point, it's also super easy to justify trading Rakell too.
 
Lord, last year they had slightly more worse than average categories and now almost everything is below average. Pens are the guy who is visibly working super hard and a flurry of activity, but actually getting nothing done.

They were actually a pretty good team at 5v5 last year, they were killed by their atrocious powerplay. Take this year's powerplay and apply it to last year and they're pretty safely a playoff team.

It's just interesting that they've had such a hard decline at 5v5 from last year despite the roster fairly similar. This is the roster they started last year with:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Smith-Malkin-Rakell
O'Connor-Eller-Carter
Harkins-Acciari-Nieto

Graves-Letang
Pettersson-Karlsson
POJ-Ruhwedel

That's not really much better than what they have now, the major difference is just not having Guentzel anymore. But the team is just miles worse this year than last year.

With the cap going up, teams are going to need to hit the floor. He has a 3M bonus coming on July 1. After the Pens pay that, his cap his is way more than his actual salary, which a team that is cash-strapped would find appealing.

Jarry's 3M bonus isn't due til July 2026, eg 2026-2027 season. He has a 1mil bonus this upcoming league year, eg 2025-2026 season.

No one would find Jarry's contract appealing because he stinks and isn't a NHL caliber goalie anymore.

Buying him out is both the correct thing for the team to do and also the generous thing to do for Jarry. It lets him have a chance elsewhere at reviving his career rather than sitting in WBS as a malcontent.

Frankly the Penguins would be doing a Jarry a favor by buying him out. He's owed $13.675 million in the last 3 years of his deal and buying him out still lets him keep $11.25 million of that. He's only losing $2.4 million, which he'd get back as a league minimum player in 3 years.

Yeah, damn, how is it possible that such a similar roster could transform from a great 5v5 team with an awful PP to a horrendous 5v5 team with a great PP in the span of one season? Bizarre.

Even when Malkin gets back, I wouldn't be opposed to Glass staying as the 2C and running Bunting-Glass-Malkin which is essentially what they did before but it might make things a bit easier on Geno.

I asked the main prospect board on wing vs center for Misa. I think he'd be a killer overall center with his skill set but I also think he'd maximize his offensive potential as a wing that is dedicated to offense. Something like Seguin vs Marner. If he's with us, I think you stick him with Sid or Geno to start and then get him spot duty as a center. Then when Malkin retires, he slides into 2C.

The wrong thing to do is to put him in the bottom 6, especially as a 3C under Sullivan. That's why if you get a top 3 pick and get Misa, I think you need to can Sullivan just from the aspect of "please don't ruin our future".

Not to quote you three times, but what's the difference between buyout and contract termination? Is it merely the player actually agree to the termination? Like I look at Saad and both sides are like "yup, f*** it, done" and they go their separate ways. If Jarry wants to get back to the NHL, that might be his quickest route. Is the only thing holding him there the sentiment of "f***in a, I make $5mil a year to play in the AHL, I ain't giving that up!"?

I would assume so. Why on Earth would anybody want to forfeit $5M+ year???

I dunno. I'm trying to imagine myself getting paid $5M+ to play a sport and suddenly losing it. I simply can't imagine doubling down on that misery by saying, "heck with it, I'll also forfeit the right I earned to $20M also." But then again, I'm not a competitive athlete. Don't know what it's like inside their brains.
