The hospitals are always overrun, the government is just bad at everything. They have more money than they need to make sure our healthcare system is taken care of, but hospitals are always just about full on any normal day.

700 ICU patients across the province put us in “we need to choose who gets care and who doesn’t unless we shut down everyone’s lives”? Really? 700 is that number? It’s not bigger than that?

if there is a bus crash, the hospitals would be overrun

how many MRI machines did we have in 2013? 5? Across the province? Really? It’s not bigger than that?

The government is just terrible at everything
Well, you can blame that hospital/ICU/MRI shortage we had coming into the pandemic on Mike Harris.

TSN is reporting that there was an ask to have fans in the stands for game 7. The fans would be all paramedics, doctors, nurses, etc...

All would be vaccinated and all would be deserving for their service during these trying times with the pandemic.

Of course dumbass Doug Ford turned it down.

I think this man needs to get off his high horse. How can a province that was in a curfew and lockdown like Montreal allow fans but not Ontario?

The man isn’t within reason to do any of what he has up until now. He now is also taking any possible advantage away from the beloved Toronto Maple Leafs so he can show his power. That is all this is.

He has taken all of our lives away with the strictest measures in the world during this pandemic. The least he can do is help us stay inside like he wants by allowing us to watch hockey and the team we love.

Putting fans in the stands would give us an advantage. Step up Ford.
If that comes out publicly I will never vote Ford ever ever ever ..

It's the behavior of the people that is driving the lockdown. Take a good look around, especially outside, and you shouldn't be surprised. Just think what goes on behind closed doors.
its the same in bc. i know theres less people there but masks werent mandatory until october. I remember everyone in the gym maskless for 4 months after they reopened.

lol what

700 is a perfectly large number. why in the world would you expect 700 ppl in the ICU daily like we live in a warzone? On avg 40-50 people die/day in Toronto and thats 1/2 of Ontario's population. 700 is excessive as is. Not to mention if you wanted to up that number you'd have to hire more nurses/doctors who would just sit around for the most part and you'd be paying 100k+ to each of them for nothing, upping your taxes.

But the government is terrible at everything... ... ...

It also wasn't even 700 people in ICU, it was 900.

Technically you can blame it on Chretien/Martin for cutting transfer payments including healthcare transfers in order to balance things back in the 90s. I happen to agree with that move and wish we had a federal government willing to retrain spending now so I'm not blaming them but it's a fallacy that it was Harris' fault.

In case anyone cares, my brother works at St. Mike's. MLSE have a lottery today (just ended a Noon) for fully vaccinated healthcare workers to attend tonight's game. Not sure if it's been stated above. Seems like MLSE took charge of this on their own?

Someone posted 550 people will be allowed to attend. If true, hoping they are a very loud 550. :thumbu:

Folks it goes back to 1970's when da stats started to change for da negative - # of nurses, # of docs, ICU beds etc .. you can blame every GOVT since early 1970s in Canada and Ontario for lowering our OECD rank to 3rd lowest today in world .. and even worse it is still getting worse today .. Ontario is 2nd lowest ranked province inside canada too .. we used to be consistently top 3 in world from 1920 when they started keeping stats to 1970 when we started our decline .. today our health care is 3rd world level

In a related news story, Doug Ford announced today that he is doing everything in his power to get the Liberals reelected in the next election.

the only thing doug ford was make things more complicated than things needed to be, now mlse has less time to get things organized because he flip flopped.

Whut?

A private company cannot override the directive of the Chief Medical Officer ... How? Who? What?

??? has Chretien/Martin been in power for the last 30 yeas. Every government after those two has had a chance to establish their own rules and policies.

700 NEW ICU patients is a huge number.

Normally, we have 2,300 ICU beds.

This 700 isn't starting from 0. It's 700 ADDITIONAL admissions on top of the people that are already there.

That's why field hospitals were sent up and William Osler was airlifting 50 patients a day out of Brampton and into ICU's farther away.

Ford reversed his ban.

550 are now allowed.

"Following discussions with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Toronto Public Health and hospital partners, I am happy to announce that they have signed off on allowing 550 fully vaccinated frontline health care workers, including hospital and long-term care staff, to be invited to attend Game 7 of the series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena tonight," says Ontario Premier, Doug Ford.

A statement from the Premier's Office goes on to say that "This is well below the arena’s capacity. With these health care workers having received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least two weeks ago, and with precautionary measures in place like screening, masking, distancing, enhanced cleaning and crowd control, public health officials are confident we can put these special fans in the stands safely and with minimal risk.""

550 Fans Allowed in Scotiabank Arena for Game 7

Wonder how they are choosing the 550 people. Ie how do I get in on the action!

It’s healthcare workers only.

If you were eligible then you probably would have known a week ago, as I doubt they just started planning for it yesterday.

Maybe they did some draws, or nominated by management, or something like that.

EDIT: sounds like MLSE held a lottery to select the attendees.

They made 50 tickets available to the hospitals in Toronto. Each hospital seems to be holding a raffle for the tickets. Attendees will get a free jersey at the game. I've entered but let me tell you, I feel like I'm signing up for a gut punch.

It was all last minute like everything else Ford has done this pandemic. he made a logical decision this time though. Got an email from my employer an hour ago to enter my name in a draw. Fingers crossed

I hope both you and the Leafs win.

If the Leafs do lose, I hope at the least they let you guys ask the questions at the post game media scrum.
