Speculation: Nick Kypreos - "I expect Minten or Cowan to be gone pretty much this time next week"

Chris Tanev 5v5 since the start of the 2022-23 season (and out of the 103 Dmen with at least 3000 minutes played):

Ozone start%: 37.65% (12th lowest out of 103)
Shots against/60: 24.21 (3rd lowest out of 103)
High danger chances against/60: 8.79 (Lowest in the NHL by a mile)

There were certainly worries about his age and past health issues which is why no other teams wanted to beat the 6 year deal he got but he's certainly one of the best defensive dmen in the game.

Toronto should definitely be "all in" this TDL. So trading whatever futures/mediocre prospects they have to support their run is definitely something they should be pursuing.

No. The have the goaltending, they have the firepower upfront, they don't need to do anything splashy. They have the ingredients for a long run already. It's up to the players in house to deliver anyway.

They need another defenceman, preferably one that can score who can push Timmins and Myers out the lineup and they need depth scoring/a third line centre

Flyers need to be all over Cowan. They already have his London teammate Barkey. Thats 2/3 of a good middle 6 NHL line possibly as early as next season.

I don't see Cowan being traded unless we're getting someone with 3+ years, I don't think anyone like that is available so probably not him.

Minten I can see being moved, looks like his ceiling is 2C, probably a good 3C.

Laughton + Risto (retained) would kill 2 birds 1 stone for the Leafs.
Risto, like Ristolainen? LOL no thanks.

Tanev...is a number 6 though?
LOL and Auston Matthews is a 3C

Not blaming you much for not following Flyers hockey but Ristolainen is playing good, very good and his play has been like that all season. Probably showcasing him but playing on pp and gets 20+ mins.

The one thing that I think Treliving should be trying to keep somewhat in the back of his mind; is trying to ensure that there is a "next wave" for the Leafs.

You look at the Dallas Stars as an example, been a very good team for a number of years, but now have Robertson, Hintz, Johnston, Stankoven, and Harley really coming into age to take that next step; while maintaining cap flexibility.

Leafs are starting to get up there in age. Their top 4 defencemen are all 30 or older. Their depth is comprised of likely journeymen defencemen. Matthews/Marner are 27 and Nylander is 28. All have played since 18/19 years old.

Knies is obviously in a great position age-wise, but if they can go out and get a guy like Brayden Schenn, perhaps without losing Cowan/Minten, it puts them in a really strong spot even for next year; given that they will have ELCs, and it's going to become harder and harder to get guys under $1m when every team has so much cap space.

There isn't a prospect that should be off the table for the Leafs. Tampa, Vegas, Florida, all of them moved their picks and lots of prospects to win. That's the model that's worked and will again.

It is now or never time. Stop worrying about guys who may end up being a 3rd liner, just trade a mid pick for a 3rd liner now and try to win.

so they create any offense then.
I meant pure shutdown pairs, I realize how my statement could insinuate general pairs so that was my mistake

While they're a great pair, they don't generate enough offence to be comparable to the likes of Toews - Makar. For pure shutdown hockey, there is no one better than McCabe - Tanev

What I took from it, was you used xGF for a defensive stat.

The Leafs have already tried going 'all in' with this core a couple of years back and it didn't work. O'Reilly to address the vet leadership and to contribute to scoring. Acciari, Lafferty to address grit and toughness up front. Schenn and McCabe on the blueline to address the defensive toughness issues. And guess what all those moves got the Leafs? ONE SINGLE playoff round win.

This core doesn't deserve another 'all in' try after doing so little in the playoffs for so long. Make one or two moves to address depth unless there's an insane deal to be had. The Leafs will succeed or fail on the core's performance and no move made at the deadline will change that. Time to stop blowing assets on this core when its shown for so long its not worth it do to so.

At some point you need to keep some prospects and picks to keep the team competitive for the future, if not trade away some players for whatever you can get to recoup some of the assets you sent out the door.
