I’m kind of stunned at the rise of Juolevi. Just a month or so ago ago I thought he was going to have to prove himself some more before maybe getting called up if his skating continued to improve after injury. Now I think he could be the no. 6 dman given how positive the organisation has been about him and in his very limited time didn’t look too bad though was clearly sheltered for a reason. A couple of great passes too, that look off pass to Petey was top shelf offence-generating stuff. I am dying to know if Fantenberg was hurt or the coaching staff just made a ballsy call.

he played 6 minute lmao

Which is amazing considering no one thought he was remotely close to getting NHL minutes all. As far as his chances of starting next season as the no.6, the only opinions that matter are that if management and the coaching staff, and they seem pretty complimentary which is why I think it might happen. So try again

This is hockey of the highest calibre. If any of those players were scared away from going to the net because of Myers, they should retire.

You probably thought Gudbranson was effective too.
Imaging every time you go to turn the door knob to use your bathroom you get a nasty electric shock. Soon, you’d be peeing outside, right? Myers provides the electric shock that causes certain players (Fiala is the perfect example; he was nowhere to be seen near the net these last two games) to avoid the front of the net.

If that is all such a factor, then why does it not bear out on actual on ice results? Even putting aside the bad penalties, Stecher had a way better xGF% and CF% than Myers over the course of the series. The minutes he played tonight weren’t soft tonight either

Can’t explain what Myers provides with fancy stats. Stecher would play more than 9 minutes if he was effective.

Thanks for a fun series. Good luck in the playoffs!

Really hope you guys get Laf. Would be super annoyed with Leafs, Panthers, Oilers, or Pens getting him. Minny has the best and most knowledgeable hockey fans in the states and they’ve never had a high draft pick who’s a star the moment he steps into the NHL.

I don’t want to see Laf fade into obscurity in Florida where nobody gives a shit about hockey but I also don’t want him going to a team that keeps getting lucky in the lottery.

Benning is a bad GM. This stands apart from my assessment of Myers in this series. Is it possible to carry those two opinions in your world view?

If it is, then take orcatown’s report as the baseline. In it, he describes the positives of Myers’ ability to recover and his toughness in front of the net. These traits go hand in hand with errors and penalties. Do you see how closely they are related?
A miscalculation requires a recovery. Clearing the net with stupid aggression can yield a penalty.

Next, Myers is known as _only_ a top4 dman with a very small margin for error. It is not a stretch at all to say he dipped below that bar due to being overly aggressive. Is it?

There are some posters that will choose to attack the poster and not the post. I would urge you to reconsider. Those posters have a reputation on here and tend not to be taken seriously anymore simply because they cannot address an argument effectively. You don’t have to go that route to make your point, regardless of whether you and I agree on Benning.
Benning is a terrible GM, and for this young core to reach the heights their talents should he needs to be replaced. But Myers meanness made a huge impact on certain Wild players - especially Fiala.

I've defended Tyler Myers (the player, not the contract) as much as anybody has here but we can't possibly keep playing him if he takes 2+ penalties every game.

If we want to win games we better play Myers, and a lot. He literally put fear into Fiala. Did you even notice Fiala in the last two games? The guy played scared, and on the perimeter.

Welcome to the Myers that we Jets fans know and don't love...

The same coaching staff played Eriksson something like 20 minutes IIRC, so I wouldn't use their judgement as the final say on things.

I think it’s a bit of a stretch to link Tyler Myers’ penalties to Fiala not scoring in the last two games with very little support. I don’t think he played on the perimeter or looked scared either.

I want my team to clear the crease and defend it physically, I don’t mind it costing them a penalty or two for cross checking a guy out of the way or defending the goalie. But 9 penalties is way too much and a lot of what Myers was getting called for we’re just undisciplined or getting caught behind the play.

in the next series I want to see him still clearing the crease and making life uncomfortable for the opposition in the Canucks zone, but without going over the top and putting the Canucks Short handed so many times. For instance, if you’ve buried a forward in the crease and are crushing him with your full body weight, there is no need for a very obvious gloved punch to the head that gets him rung up. You can be be bastard without being so bloody obvious.

And this team went on a 14-3 run this season when Eriksson was out with Horvat and Pearson. Now 17-3 with that trio together.

Bo is used in tough matchups, and Loui Eriksson is a terrific defensive player 5 on 5. It appears that defensive acumen really helps Bo out.

There is probably a better example of poor usage...

is it just me or do i get a vibing sensation that this current canucks team is somewhat eerily similar to that 2009/2010 hawks team? kane/toews on elcs like petterson/hughes. depth in all positions. couple of cagey veterans with stanley cup rings.

This. Have been thinking it for awhile.

Green has been effectively forced to use that trio as a matchup line because all of Benning’s overpaid bottom six players can’t handle tough minutes. Ideallly, you have a third line playing these tough minutes to free up the second line to make a larger offensive impact.

Well no, that is obviously not the case at all. Tyler Toffoli was the teams best player in expected goals since coming over, and is out with injury. While Josh Leivo also played well with Bo, was productive and is a terrific defensive presence on that 2nd line. His injury also affects the roster construction.

You also forgot Brandon Sutter was one of the Canucks best forwards in this series, from 3rd line centre. He was instrumental in this series win.

Antoine Roussel also does well with tough matchups from the bottom 6.

The Canucks played the majority of this series with 4 top 9 forwards out with injury. Benning’s overpaid bottom 6 came up aces in covering for those injuries and not hurting the team. That depth 16-17 deep turned into a positive storyline for the club.

You mean a third line like Bergeron and Toews play on for their teams? Or Kessler when he was with us?
Yes, Benning is a terrible GM who has signed old guys to terrible contracts, but that doesn’t diminish how well Bo plays as a number two centre in a matchup role.
