Interesting that he was an NHL goalie everywhere else but one stop.
His splits in his last year in TO are interesting. He was out of his mind in November with a .959 Sv% in 11 games. Then he went three months playing basically like he has recently only to get hot agian down the stretch before playing like a yoyo in the playoffs. He had a similar situation oi LA. One year he was very good then the next he had a .350% QS rate which is about what he has had in Edmonton. Bottom line, he seems to be a guy who just can't keep it together for long but when it falls apart it really falls apart.

The problem is that if they waived Skinner he would probably have gotten claimed leaving you with only the over priced guy to tend the nets.

I understand the contract but we just waved the less problematic goalie we had this year
Good job, Cup or bust

I dont think that we really disagree.

My main point has been that Campbell was never a starter and yet he was given a 5 year $5M contract to be a starter. There was no reason to think that he could make that step and take on a starters role...especially considering that he had been fighting with confidence issues most of his career. The increased pressure of being a starter was going to be an issue.

That said...I completely agree with you that he has been a good backup. Unfortinatley thats not what this team needed.
I'd be willing to bet that there was zero other teams looking to sign Campbell long term. Holland had a wad of cash from the Koskinen contract expiring and decided to throw it all on Campbell.

We blamed:
Dubnyk
Talbot
Koskisken
Smith
Campbell (was trending down when we got him)
and to a lesser extent Skinner ( he's in his sophomore season)

Get a good Fkn D corp for once . It's not always aboout the goalies except Campbell who looked like s*** from the start so I'm fine with him going to the Condors.

100%

This team has always prioritized offence which requires stellar bail out goaltending in a two decades long effort to recreate the Golden Years.

The only time the Oilers went off script was the EIG owned hard working years and the Cup run year anchored by solid D systems, a true top D in Pronger and solid goaltending from Roli.

It’s time the Oilers hired a coach that demands defensive excellence, actual goaltending and drafts and acquires players who have high defensive IQ with jam to their game to compliment McDavid and that might cost us Draisaitl as we won’t be able to afford him and McDavid on their next deals.

Play poor defensively this is what you get. Put in an unsteady Eddie with a young sophomore goalie and it’s a disaster.

To be fair, in the 2023 calendar year, including the playoffs, Campbell was only marginally better if I did the math properly.

Both goalies' save percentages from Jan 1 2023 till now were sub 900 [0.895 vs 0.896].
Btw, not absolving either. Both are horrible

Both are the problem, neither are the solution

well deserved....but anyone who watched Skinner last night...hell, since last April, knows he can't be far behind
Now that would be the good ole switch a Rama . Take our 2 AHL goalies up, send our 2 NHL goalies down.
Actually Stauffer mentioned last night their GAA in the minors. Impressive

I can’t upvote this enough. Never in his career was he a starter!! No idea what Holland was thinking. Agreed that everyone involved needs to be removed from ever making a hockey decision again.

Some people saying Campbell has been better than Skinner? What are you smoking!?
I think they meant less sucky?

I mean, not trying to absolve Campbell (or Skinner) of any blame here, but how many goalies is Edmonton going to burn through before they actually consider putting together a team that can play defence in front of them?
These guys simply do not stop pucks they should. Awful tending makes he D look just as bad as visa versa.

Capologists - what are the cap implications of this move? IF he stays there for the rest of his contract, does that mean we save $5 Million per season?

Don’t know why people would feel bad for Campbell. Guy is going to get paid millions the next few years.

If I sucked at my job as much as Campbell does at his, safe to say I’m probably canned.

Agree with that but Skinner need a complete course correct, he getting worst every weeks since he started in.

He is currently statistically the very worst goalie in those key stats
Worst goal save above expected
Worst win above replacement

no.

Save a little over a million per season.

He'll get bought out this summer

Nope. Only $1.15M. But that doesn't matter. If he can't find his game down there, he'll either be traded with assets tied to him or bought out.

Here's how a buyout looks. It's actually not too bad as it eats up all of the Brown hit next season, then has a $2.5M hit the next two years which are likely years with pretty large cap increases.

Finally.
Why are the Oilers management the last people on the planet to figure out a guy is terrible?
How long is it going to take them to figure out Skinner sucks too?

He certainly isnt and never has been an NHL starting goalie.

Makes sense though squeezing some cap space and have to throw this team a lifeline in terms of addressing the biggest elephant in the room - league worst goaltending.

By all accounts a fine person. Just not cut out for the role this hopeful Cup team thought they were buying. He’ll get his money and probably piece of mind following two years less a day of nightmare job performance.
In a way I'm happy for him. He gets to keep a huge sum of money and get out of this pressure cooker. And Bakersfield has nice winter temperatures.

He could enjoy bus rides too. They are in the scenic environment.

I think its a function of the country club atmosphere surrounding the club.

There isn't much motive to go above and beyond when evaluating players. Either way, the OBC looks after you. There is never a sense of urgency.

So I guess they buy out Campbell's contract in the summer.
