This is still has the potential to be one of the worst moves we have made in a long while.

He needs to play at a high level, if he has taken a major step back then yikes. It’s basically win the cup this year or hope the cap goes up a shit ton next year and I’ll stand by that.

If he is the player he was BEFORE he missed a whole year it’s fine to good. If he isn’t?

If he’s taken that massive of a step back, just waive him. If he’s not worth 4 million he probably goes unclaimed and he’ll end up in the minors where his cap hit is fully buried and comes with no bonus overage next year

Holland isn't ruthless enough to do that

He only has to play 10 games is the issue. 10 games is all he needs to get all his bonuses, which is the issue. 10 games isn’t enough of an evaluation. They won’t waive him before 10 games.
If it was like 20-30 games then yeah. It’s 10 games so unless he gets injured he will get it.
If he ends up as a 4th liner ugh.

Does the 10 game rule count for playoffs.?

Looks utterly useless. The team should waive him now, let him see if he can get up to speed in the AHL and start dominating down there and if that happens call him up and assess him before he hits 10 games at the NHL level.

So ridiculous that we didn't make it so he had to hit 15 goals or something at least for the max bonus. Dude just has to be alive for a few weeks to get it. All cap increase for 24/25 gone just like that. Holland will be done though so what does he care

That’s a Holland negotiation for you. Lazy and easy all the way. Turn over every stone and squeeze every penny? Nah that’s too much work.

Meanwhile Tatar signed for a million and a half. How Holland could possibly miss on a player he had in Detroit while overpaying a guy who missed a year is beyond comprehension.

They couldn’t afford to add $1.5M in cap for this season (which is pathetic for other reasons…)

Brown looks like junk but the whole team can f*** off with the way they’re playing right now

I would probably be thinking about waiving him very soon. I don’t see him bringing anything to the party and now and hurts us next year.

His skating, shot, and defensive awareness I thought were good in the preseason. In the real games though, he’s made some defensive mistakes and hasn’t been able to find his offensive game or any sustained chemistry with McD. I still think he can contribute and be a good player for us, based on a very small eye test sample. So I’m holding out hope this doesn’t turn out to be a huge blunder.

I never liked the potential cap carry over. With Kane sputtering and Brown not settled in yet we have no $ to improve the wings. If he ends up with a really poor year and we are in cap hell next season because of him, yikes.

Can they bury him in the minors, if things go from bad to worse, and wiggle out of that cap hit?

As long as he plays less than 9 NHL games this season they could. Once he plays 9 games or more we are stuck with the entirety of his $3.25 million bonus.

I guess it has to be done if he continues to play like shit. They could pluck a 4th line player off waivers and not carry the cap hit into the next season.
