Before Saturday the Flames and Oilers had the same record. After their game last night the Flames were 3 points out of the playoffs.

No, tie season isn't over for the Oilers already.

Calgary has NHL quality goaltending and defence. Edmonton has Ekholm and then AHLers at best. Both teams are terrible but with a tight defensive system Calgary has a chance of being around 10th in the conference.

At what point do we just rename the thread "Oilers Haters Anonymous"?

Don't think theres been a constructive argument in like 40pages. Just a bunch of dudes high-fiving each others poor takes on how they love seeing the Oilers fail, they knew everything was shit from the start, Nurse steals babies at night time, McDavid already has a trade in place to Toronto, etc...

I do think they'll get back on track, but they do look like a mess right now.

Goaltending is letting them down big time, but the defence is also letting down the goaltending. I think many top starters would struggle behind that D.

If I see one more person bring this up as "fan takes", imma request mod powers to ban on the basis of stupidity and group-thnk.

It was McDavid and Drai who said that. Legit them. Thats it. And honestly, what team that was a playoff team the prior season WOULDN'T have that mentality!? Wouldn't that be a bigger red flag than a team that expected to compete for a cup after going halfway through the dance the previous year?

There was not a single Oilers fan who thought we were favourites. EVERYONE lambasted our lack of goaltending addressment in the offseason, as well as our lack of defensive upgrades. Literally everyone. Comb the boards.

I've called on 80% of the people spouting this nonsense in this thread to provide receipts of Oilers fans planning the parade route and saying we're cup favourites. Not a single one provided.

Suprise suprise it stays the same here.

They absolutely should be cup favorites.

The mentality should be Cup or bust. But they definitely struggle with expectations.
Also, if Gary thinks it really is time to throw us (Canadian team with the biggest star on stage) a bone for one year, he needs to get a memo out to the refs and Parros and instruct them not to f*** us over just this one year.

I'm sure theres more, I just didn't want to spend more than two minutes on this.

It's not the team itself, it's the fact they're wasting a generational player's career. Fascinating to watch how spectacularly management has screwed up building around him.
A player not winning the Stanley Cup by age 26 doesn't mean his career has been "wasted" by his franchise:
-- McDavid still has another 10+ years to win a Stanley Cup (whether in Edmonton or elsewhere)
-- In the Cap era, it's very probable that at least 50% of current and future "generational" players are going to retire Cup-less.

Did Detroit waste Yzerman's career? Did Washington waste Ovechkin's career?

Calgary be better in goal but that defense is worse than Guildford Flames defense.

Interesting that Yzerman didn't win until he became a better all around player while seemingly sacrificing some of his offensive game. Ovechkin won when he played a notable solid all around game during the '18 playoffs.

The Oilers have structured their team around outscoring their opposition lead by McDavid and Drai. They have had minor success with that sword but could be dying by it right now.

Can the Oilers do anything other than "Run and Gun"? Or does that take away the strength of McDrai too much?

Not getting goaltending / PDO will make any team look worse than it is.

At some point they should positively regress, make it back to .500...........where they take it from there is up to them.

Connor will probably have a 5 or 6 point night, the Oil will torch the Sharks for 7 or 8 goals and all is good again. The universe will unfold as it should.

Going from memory the Ovi Capitals had way more success...especially in the regular season all through Ovechkin's career than the Oilers have with McDavid. They were never in danger of missing the playoffs and no one complained about the team's depth or management. They were a lock for the post season just worried about 2nd round exists to NYR or the Penguins. To be fair Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Fleury was a better core than Ovi, Backstrom, Green/Carlson, Holtby. To that point a core of McDavid, Drai, RNH, ? ? should be having more success than that Caps core.

Do the Oilers at some point trade Drai for a goalie? An above average goalie with term or maybe a great goalie approaching new contract like Drai?

Yea it’s great having two elite centers but maybe less so if you’re lacking elite depth at the other important positions.

There’s at least a couple teams with either two goalies, or a great goalie they were rumored to want to trade at some point. I’m not sure what else would have to go into it. I’m less sure about realistically available but goalie seems easier, though obviously other stuff thrown in.

Anyway imo as fun as a loss would be, I think the Oilers beat the sharks by multiple goals
