Nurse/Ceci was one of the worst defensive pairings I have ever seen in Oilers silks. I’ll take Nurse/ [insert any player here] over that dreaded pairing

fair, but I have a hard time believing that stetcher and Emeberson beside the abomination that is Nurse is going to be any better

Our defense is so thin we gotta hope a dude with 30 games under his belt is the answer in the top 4
Yikes

He played good in a small sample with zero pressure on him
Now we need him (or Stetcher or Brown) to elevate his minutes and cover for Nurse’s inevitable gaffs
I think it’s more likely that Emberson clears waivers during training camp when every other team is waiving 2-3 guys just like him, than it is that he’s a top4 guy like some people are saying.

So essentially he needs a baby sitter.

We’ve heard this 1000 times. lol.

How did you watch the playoffs and not understand that Darnell was a huge problem. Asking these dudes to play big minutes while covering him is a big task.
Fantastic. You're telling us all what we already know. Thing is Nurse is not going anywhere, so we need to address the issue. Yes, we need someone who can match his strengths and weaknesses. Yes this is a known issue. So.....We now have Brown, Stetcher, and Emberson to try out beside him. We tried Broberg, and it was not very good at all. Kulak plays very poorly on the right side too. I think Emberson may surprise and be solid with Nurse due to his skill set.

He won't make it through waivers lol. That's how he got snagged by San Jose in the first place. They'd just take him back, and how stupid would that be?

Last time Ty Emberson played for Kris Knoblauch, he put up seven goals, 20 assists, and was +17 while skating as a top-pair defenseman.

Stetcher and Emberson were playing regularly…on 2 of the worst teams in the league last year

A team with a competent D corps has them playing in #7 role at best
Not top 4 on the supposed “Cup contender”
Putting up great defensive numbers against solid QoC on one of the worst teams in the league is a good thing.

And I’m saying I hope you’re right

But I think it’s a risky ass play and I’d feel way more comfortable with someone actually proven.

For everyone saying that Emberson is a #7D, we don't know that for sure. I highly doubt that him being a former player under Knoblauch is a coincidence. Knob knows him better than anyone. Ceci was a weak link in the top 4 and overpaid for 3rd pairing duty. I also feel like a lot of people are sleeping on Josh Brown. He brings bite to our blueline and we signed him for 3 years. I doubt that was done for him to be in the minors.

Again
30 game sample size
Extremely small
Broberg doesn't have that much more. Is 51 more games worth 3.6 million right now?

Fair enough, but that's not Broberg either.

Trade someone.

I don’t think we can go into a season with that D core the way it is and expect stellar results, let alone, making the SCF again.
You’re going to overpay to accommodate Kane. Massively. Again, you’re leaving the team with no leverage. Depleting prospects and picks etc.

I feel like Brown, Stecher and Emberson give us different looks on that third pair RD, depending on the team we're playing.

How funny would it be if we walked away from Broberg, took the cap space/picks and Emberson turns out to be exactly what we need in that 4 spot.

I think that is the idea behind grabbing him. We need a 2nd pairing RHD to play with Nurse. Broberg is not the good choice for that role (this we already know). Emberson could very well be, and is 3.6 million dollars cheaper at least for another year.
Also:
While Ty Emberson’s acquisition was largely viewed as Edmonton merely adding some extra depth on the back end, they have an opportunity to keep him around beyond the upcoming season but will need to play him somewhat regularly to do so. PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) that the Oilers will need to play the 24-year-old in at least 50 games in 2024-25 in order to retain his RFA rights (with arbitration eligibility at that time). Otherwise, Emberson will be eligible to become a Group Six unrestricted free agent. He was only able to play in 30 games with San Jose last season in his first taste of NHL action, missing 36 games due to injuries along the way.

He is our Desharnais replacement. AHL favorite of our coach.

I do find it a bit intriguing that we made a deal with the Sharks… a team that would have first shot at either of these players on waivers.

I wonder if there could be something there. Doubt it.

But just losing both to the Blues is a crappy outcome!

I need to watch J. Brown more but hes one signing that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Its Katz money and hes buryable so I don’t care. I don’t think hes better than Stetcher or Ember but doesnt hurt have a AHL player that you dont have to worry about getting claimed because of the term.

What's the plan then? Broberg? Then we have to trade another Vet D in Kulak at the very least. Broberg has to play on his left side to be effective. He sucked on his right side.
Agreed.
Tough choice. Kulak + StL 2nd + $1.9M in cap space vs. Broberg - pick to move Kulak
I would stick with Kulak.
