Oilers are good at hockey again: Back in the plofs

Since the coaching change they are:

5th in CA/60
4th in SA/60
7th in GA/60
5th in xGA/60
6th in SCA/60
7th in HDCA/60

Doesn't look too shabby to me and matches the eye test. What about their system is it that doesn't work in your opinion?
Still too many odd man's and breakaways given up. When teams try to stretch them I find the system isn't preventing the long plays.

I've been saying for years that the Oilers biggest problem was lack of commitment to playing team defense, led by McDavid and Drai out there chasing points over wins. And I kept getting roasted by Oiler fans blaming their latest goalie or lack of team depth.
From what I see the team is finally taking team defense seriously and working as a cohesive unit. It might cost McD an Art Ross but the team finally looks like a legit contender. If they can keep this type of play up they will be very scary in the playoffs.

Over every NHL team’s last 82GP in the regular season, only the Boston Bruins have a better points earned percentage than the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers have cared about winning for longer than just this 13 game winning streak.

Now do playoffs
Few more stats though

7th in playoff wins and 5th in games played

On save percentage.. in between Hellebyuck and Vasi and won more games than both of them.

I also used min 4 games from last year playoffs.. guess who was first?

So he's keeping company with Vasi and Helle but not quite as good as Campbell based on his playoff stats.lol

He also outperformed Vezina winner Ulmark in last years playoffs based on wins and games played. Both were sub .900.

I will repeat that I didn't think he was great but he was also meant to be a backup last season. Not a starter but we signed Campbell and he shit the bed (despite having an elite save percentage in the playoffs and leading them in that category).

Except Campbell can't even stop a puck in the AHL so.
That was my point.lol

He did lead the playoffs in save percentage (minimum 4 games played) and Stu, Vasi, Ullmark and Helle were all sub .900.

Who would you rather have?lol

I would love to a 'oilers are here to burn down a village thread' just to see how long it last for
Thread opens at noon

12:01 Leafs fans bombard it
12:02 Nucks fans join in
12:03 Flames fans jump in
12:04 HFOil crowd joins
12:05... thread closed.lol

Call it a hunch.

In fariness, we are now 11th.. maybe if we crack top 10 it'll be worth trying.lmao

Correlation does not equal causation. The only hope the Oilers had of winning in the past was for McDrai to score because no one else could. They're getting consistent offensive contributions from others now. They are also playing better team defense, and also getting better goaltending now. McDrai aren't sacrificing offense right now. McDavid would be leading the league if he didn't get injured early in the season. And the powerplay also isn't clicking right now, and it's not because they're committing to team defense with the man advantage.

I probably didn't phrase that best, of course they've got enough talent they could play any style and win a lot of hockey games. What I'm talking about playing the type of style that wins you Cups. The 18-19 Lightning are a great example of this. They played run and gun hockey all season and tore up the league and then ran into a Columbus team in the playoffs that was disciplined and cohesive and got their asses kicked. Come playoffs defense still usually wins in the end. We're seeing Edmonton show they can play that game and I think that's good for them.

I was shocked to hear this is a franchise record for the Oilers since it’s nowhere as good as a team as the Wayne era.
in that era, there was ties and such.

So its probably not as impressive as then still.

Even the Canadiens of the 60's and 70's, there wasnt even overtime, so it would be 13 regulation wins in a row.

This would be more comparable to an unbeaten streak of that era.

Agree. They had better hold the memories of their losses to the Avs and Knights in their heads and have a better defensive strategy/commitment/execution come playoff time.

Currently, they are playing a defensive style that has proven successful for many teams in the past and its fits with their skill set. Knoblach has them playing an aggressive, fast paced, forechecking, pressure system. They are coming in waves. It takes much greater effort and commitment to execute this style effectively, but so far, so good.

Woodcroft had them man to man in the playoffs and were exposed… then he failed to adjust. Then this season he tried have them sit back in a zone playing a patient defensive system when they don’t, as a collective, have the defensive IQ to play that way… what a disaster. Again, he failed to adjust.

Am I the only non-Oilers fan who likes the Oilers. I usually don't like the golden boys in sports (Crosby and Lebron) but I actually like McDavid. And the Oilers play fun hockey.
Yea it’s weird.
Flames and Canucks can hate us all they want. It’s the trifecta of hate.

Kings fans can hate us because of the last two playoffs.

Winnipeg can hate us because we always beat them on the way to Stanley Cup wins.

Then you got Avs, Leafs, Tampa, Pens fans who hate us because their favorite players are always compared to McDavid and it’s a weird f***ing reason to hate.

I think too many people put value in a hockey forum to dislike a fan base. Some Duck fans hate us more than the Kings. How does that make sense? That’s like a Ranger fan hating the Oilers more than the Devils because “they got annoying cocky fans on a hockey forum”

It’s weird dude.

I know this one guy that is a Bulls fan that literally every post of his on Facebook is calling Lebron Leflop or something equally as lame. I understand Pens fans because for the longest time Crosby has been the best player in the world and THE generational player and now they're feeling jealous about this new guy that people are saying is better. It's not surprising. Avs, Leafs, and Tampa are weird because none of MacKinnon/Makar, Mattthews, or Kucherov were ever considered generational or the best player in the sport. The Leafs are the weirdest. Matthew is not even close.

McDavid, like LeBron, has an army of undiagnosed personality disorders on the internet who devote an unhealthy amount of time posting about him. Crosby probably would have had more of this had McDavid not shown up to soak up some of the bullets (ironically from a lot of Penguins fans).

Or people just see what they want to see so they have a convenient narrative to explain why "X" team did or did not win.

Sports fans love their black and white, but there are a lot of grey areas to consider. Of course with taking a deeper look, you can't boil down success into a single sentence so looking at nuance is never popular.
