Oilers are good at hockey again: Back in the plofs

2 takeaways from the recap

1. This is a Vladar highlight reel.. he was outstanding.
2. I've been noting that Hyman is not a passenger but, to my eye, is driving play and a machine out there. Go to the end and watch that empty net goal as evidence.lol He is a real pain in the ass!

Hyman is definitely not a passenger. He drives play. RNH has been though

Hopefully McDavid gets back on track here before the break and they can go into it riding a 16 game winning streak. With Columbus, Chicago and Nashville up next, it's certainly possible. Would be cool to have the opportunity to tie the all-time record.

Skinner has been out-of-this-world during the streak. Especially over the past 7 games where the offense has dried up and he's either kept the team in games after going down or made timely saves to preserve wins. 10 wins in a row for him, 11 straight games of the team giving up 2 or fewer goals. But yes, the Oilers are a "bad defensive team". The "easy schedule" excuse is also hilarious and little more than a reductionist argument intended to distract from and trivialize how impressively the Oilers have been playing.

Knoblauch has instituted a structure that is night and day from before. Coffey has the defense playing up to their potential and willing to make plays instead of playing scared. The only teams in the West that scare me at this point are Colorado and Winnipeg.

PDO from Dec. 21st to Jan. 20th:

Canucks = 1.054
Oilers = 1.05

Even Strength PDO:

Canucks = 1.059
Oilers - 1.05

This should silence the Oiler PDO brigade for a while!
Is this supposed to be a shocking revelation or something? The Oilers are on the hottest of hot streaks. Literally one of the hottest in NHL history. Even if they’ve played very well most nights, do you think they haven’t had a bit of luck go their way during that?

Both teams will regress to the mean at some point. #shocker.

Why would it? They had historically low PDO for the first 15 games of the season. Oilers still aren't even above 1.000 on the season, given they rank 4th, 1st, 1st, 8th, and 13th in CF%, xGF%, HDCF%, GF%, and HDGF%, they should still be trending up on the season. That doesn't mean they aren't going to lose any of the coming games.

No idea why the argument keeps getting distilled into 'high PDO good luck, bad skill'.

There is clearly a handful of you who take offense from the mention of that measure while also not having a clue of what it means. It's very entertaining.

Easiest 41 game stretch in NHL history... played the sharks 20 times and then got a mix of Ducks and Hawks for the other 20. Meanwhile, all our opponents only play Avs and B's on a nightly basis.
Reminds me of how Draisaitl's point he gets with Mcdavid don't actually count, so he's really not a superstar.

So what you're saying is that the Oilers are literally unbeatable with historical PDO while the Nucks have even more ridiculous PDO without being unbeatable, and you come into this thread bragging about it?

Man, you're like the gift that keeps on giving.

Besides, I don't see Oilers fans claim our PDO of late is sustainable? You know, like you do with your team?

They were always going to climb out of it but to do it this emphatically is impressive. I think even if they hadn't fired the coach, this was possible. The good thing for the Oilers though is that they fired the coach but hired an equally competent if not better coach.

Their main problem at the beginning of the season was their goalies not being able to stop anything. You could have 12 McDavid's on your team but if you're starting every game down 2, 3-0 after 10 shots in the first period you're going to lose more than you win.

I would not want to face this team in the playoffs. I think the only team that stands in their way and the Stanley Cup Finals is Colorado. I hope we get that WCF match up.

I'll add in knights. Proven pedigree in playoffs.

I think the goaltending will regress a little bit (they've given up under 2 goals per game on the streak, however the offense has really dried up over the last 5 as well, that should improve. It's hard to complain when you just keep winning, even if some of them are grind it out low scoring games.

True but they've stumbled a bit, they're a year older and are coming off a long run themselves. I'd put the Oilers as favourites in a series against them.
It'd be closer than last year but slumping in January is a great time to slump. They get two healthy goalies and watch out. Eichel is out too. That may not be the case in April. Ftr.. not a knights fan and am an Oiler fan.lol
