Oilers are good at hockey again: Back in the plofs

Since the coaching change they are:

5th in CA/60
4th in SA/60
7th in GA/60
5th in xGA/60
6th in SCA/60
7th in HDCA/60

Doesn't look too shabby to me and matches the eye test. What about their system is it that doesn't work in your opinion?

Just from a casual observer prospective, the forwards now actually seem interested in being in their own zone to win pucks and support the defense. It's like a different team out there - which is why sometimes making a coaching change is very much the right move.

They will find a way to diminish ANYTHING. Have no fear.
Team wins? Opponent had tough schedule.
Team still wins? Opponent got jobbed by the refs.
Team is playing well? Easy schedule.
Team is still playing well? Getting lucky, will regress.
Player lighting it up? Gets easy matchups.
Player still playing well? Carried by teammates.
Player still playing well? Not actually that good because of PP points.
Player still playing well? Not actually good because of 5v5 stats.

Team playing poorly? Tough schedule.
Team still playing poorly? Not getting the bounces and luck will turn.
Team still playing poorly? Actually playing good despite losing because advanced stats.
Team still playing poorly? Refs favor the other team not enough powerplays.
Player playing poorly? Bad puck luck, will turn around because advanced stats.
Player still playing poorly? Crappy Team and/or goalie.
Player still playing poorly? Being misused by coaching staff.

Sounds about right. Every reason in the world for why a team doing well isn't actually doing well, and every reason in the world why a team that isn't doing well is actually playing well and it will turn around.

This applies to every team btw, not just the Oilers.

Good if the ducks cant make the playoffs... i at least need toronto and edmonton to make it so i can look forward to them getting knocked ou

I hate to break the bad news to you, but the Ducks aren't making the playoffs this season... ;)

Future looks super bright though, shouldn't be long until they are back in the mix. I'm still bummed that Sam Steel didn't work out.

Although they've played better and they'll likely shoe-in to the playoffs, a large part of their success in this win streak is also due to playing weak and/or slumping teams. With that said, you cannot fault them for winning. Bouchard I feel has stepped up, McDavid is obviously playing well, etc.

I just anticipate a regression (obviously) to ending up to being either a wildcard or a 3rd seed in the Pacific instead of the pace they're trending towards. Systematically I haven't been impressed and they're still bleeding a lot of scoring chances and carrying on into the final months is when they face tougher competition schedule wise.
During the last stretch in which the the Oilers have gone 21-6, they've also played and got wins against the likes of PHI, DET, NYI, NYR, WPG, VGK, NJD, LAK, and CAR. That covers a lot of the teams currently ahead of the Oilers in the standings.

Are these all weak teams? Or do they all conveniently "slump" when they play the Oilers?

Only 12 of the Canucks 29 wins have come against teams currently in the playoffs and 7 of those wins are against the wildcard teams.

This is the first time I have liked the way an Oilers team has played the game since 2006. Not the winning, the style of play.

Only 13 goals let up in their past 9 games, which includes 3 OT periods. During this overall 19-3 run, they’ve let up more than 3 goals just three times and haven’t done so during the 11 game streak.

They’re playing great all around, from top to bottom. Not surprised by a turnaround, but didn’t think it would be this extreme or this quick. This might be the year.

Thought it was f***ing hilarious when everyone wrote off the Oilers due to a bad start. Only a matter of time for them to win a bunch of games in a row. They are a legit contender since acquiring Eckholm.

Well I’m hoping you have a lot of success in the playoffs, mister. I’ll cheer for the Jets after my Oil are eliminated.

Not for a lack of trying though, too. Lots of chances but the finish hasn't been there again. This was the case early in the year as well but the difference now is the goals against are also down.

They are amazing at coming from behind in games

During this streak I swear they were behind in like 9 of them going into the 3rd. Probably exaggerating a bit, but it sure seems like it

Probably not sustainable.

I'd like to see them get leads and hold onto them, rather than relying on coming back all the time.
