Speculation: Offseason Thread Part IV - Let's Make A Deal

Callahan scored at a ~28ish goal pace playing WITH the torn labrum. I think he might see a dip in production, but I'd be shocked if he doesn't score 20 over 70-75 games.

When is he due back? And I say this from personal experience that I will be incredibly impressed if Callahan can score 20 within 12 months of labrum surgery. He'll be cleared for contact within 4 months but all bets are off as far as comfort, mobility, and strength go. I know he managed to produce with the injury but it's 10 steps back after surgery. Him and Hagelin are working their butts off right now in PT.

The question wasn't about adding another PMD. It was about keeping the one we have (MDZ).

No idea what you're trying to say in regards to DZ and Staal. Staal is a top 2 dman when healthy. DZ is a top 4 when healthy, but he also can provide 40+ points.

We don't have the cap space to fit a 30 goal scorer on this team without gutting our depth. We've been down that road before.

He may start slow, but if he's back on pace in the 2nd half of the season, it's all good. He doesn't have to actually score 20+ goals as long as he's scoring at a 20+ goal pace by the time the playoffs start.

The same goes for some of the younger guys too. There's no reason they can't improve over the course of the season to the point where they are playing like 20 goal scorers, even if they don't actually reach that number. And we can add at the deadline as well.

Until we get into the season and see how this team plays under AV, it's really hard to predict anything.

I thought I read that it was likely he could miss the first month of the season, but more than that is unlikely. I know a torn labrum is hard to recover from, but he's not really the type who is scoring from range anyway. Most of his tallies are of the greasy variety.

I suspect his best shot would be to make a good impression early with Callahan and Hagelin out due to injury. We'll have some vacant wing spots for at least a few weeks and all through preseason. Kristo, Miller, Kreider, Fast will all have opportunities to break in like MDZ, Stepan did.

At least some one else gets it. You can change systems but it still won't fix the many holes in this lineup. That falls on the Teflon GM's shoulders.

The question was adding another PMD over a top 6 fwd. Looks like we misunderstood each other.
I want DZ to stay on the team. I get the cap situation, but the team is still lacking in the goal scoring department.

I am not saying this team is perfect but they are not an albatross. There are other top teams who will have to let younger players fill out the roster. The rangers pushed through to make the playoffs last year because they played a pretty damn good even strength game. And post trade, they did not have clowe for that many games while having Dorsett out until the playoffs. You subtract Clowe and add Pouliot, D.Moore, and Dorsett for a full season and you have a lot deeper of a team. Kristo, Lindberg, Fasth, Hrivik, Miller knocking on the door.

Had this team had a better PP, this team would have finished higher and pushed harder in the playoffs. So yes I believe a coaching change will help a lot.
 
Sharks fan coming in peace. First, congrats on signing Hagelin to a very inexpensive extension. Next step, Stepan, I know. Good luck on that one as well.

I am curious if you are still looking for a RHD or if you feel you are set in that regard? (Basically, what are your team needs now that rosters are firming up?) If you are shopping for something, do you have any forwards in particular that are expendable for the right asset? (Sharks might shop Boyle, Braun or Demers, for a young top 9 forward or good forward prospect. Not sure if you would be interested.)
 
The team need is cap space. Any deal right now will be even salary or salary going away from the Rangers. Any move for a right handed D would push a Dman like Moore or Stralman out of the lineup, which the Rangers wouldn't want, so any deal for a RD would, logically involve one of the Rangers LD's.

You touched on a very sensitive area which is "our young players will have to show their worth and their meddle and produce!
I have personally moved on from Torts; even though he was clearly the best coach this team has had since the days of Roger Neilson, his shtick/system had clearly run it's course.
About AV? Really not sure how much of a difference he'll make. He certainly will have way less talent to coach here than he had for 6,7 years over at Vancouver.

I'm really curious as to how Samuelson's defensive strategy will play out and what kind of effect it will have on Hank's numbers?

I guess change is good but I still feel their roster is seriously flawed; not enough scoring, too slow, too small and unless they pull off a big trade, I see the Rangers struggling to make the playoffs!

Maybe. I have some doubts. Primarily, you yourself admitted that a foundation of very strong even strength play is in place. The assumption is that will continue -- I hope so, but Im not completely sure.

Everyone expects the NHL players will be participating. July 17th was the day mentioned for the NHL schedule to be released. Its the day after the All-Star game. The new MLB CBA gives all teams 4 days off. Monday-Thursday. The NHL has 2 days all to themselves to get some attention.

Should be a BIG off-season hockey week. Expect official Olympic announcement and the release of the 2013-14 NHL schedule

How about Pyatt and DelZotto for Braun or Demers, hell We'll even through in Powe
 
Am I the only one that thinks Pyatt is basically worthless, and should just be kept for depth, unless he needs to be a cap dump?
 
I thought Pyatt was one of the better skaters in the Washington series. That entire line (Pyatt - Boyle - Dorsett) was probably the most consistent line all series. They spent so much time in the offensive zone. If there's cap room to keep him around, he's nice to have for depth.
 
Pyatt was good in the playoffs but if he's gonna only show up for 2-3 weeks during the regular season, that's a problem.

Worst case scenario he becomes a 13th forward with occasional duty and can be inserted into a playoff series for the corner battles.
