Hagelin and Cally will both (likely) be placed on LTIR meaning that their roster spots need replacements, to begin with at least.
Inserting Asham and Powe here to begin with is therefore no real problem , at least cap wise. Miller and Kristo (and Kreider too) can all be demoted without waivers if necessary to attain space once Cally and Hagelin return.
Then to signing Derek Stepan...
The real question is therefore not really getting more cap space for a bridge deal as there is ample money to do such, but if they can make a longer deal work somehow. As RB points out, a trade would be necessary to do that...
A trade with Phoenix maybe? Been too long without one it seems now :sarcasm:

Long term IR is 10 games and 24 days. Callahan and Hagelin are not expected to be out that long.

The Rangers could create additional space by placing either Callahan or Hagelin on Long-Term Injury, but a player must miss 10 games and 24 calendar days in order to qualify for the exemption.

The medical staff does not believe either winger will miss that much time to start the season that opens on Oct. 3 with a nine-game road trip concluding on Oct. 26. The Garden opener on Oct. 27 represents Game 10.

New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan told NHL.com his rehab from shoulder surgery is on schedule, but that also means he doesn't plan on doing much in training camp. Callahan had the operation done in late May.

"As the schedule goes, it's going to dip into training camp and it's possible it could dip into the regular season, too," Callahan said. "The biggest thing with this is the contact. I should be able to be fully skating and shooting in training camp, but it's when you can take contact and I don't think you know that until you get further on and they evaluate it and check it out. As of now, how the rehab is going, I'm right on schedule."

The Rangers have too many forwards. Sather talked about the young guys on July 3. The day after Kristo was acquired. According to Jim Cerny, the Rangers brass is very high on Kristo.

Sather indicated that while he sees "some options" in free agency, the Rangers' plans are focused on giving their promising young players a chance to contribute now.

"We have lots of good young kids coming," Sather said. "I don't want to shut the door on them."

Vigneault said the same thing when he was hired

Vigneault talked about how he has developed top young talent — think the Rangers’ Chris Kreider and J.T. Miller — especially on the offensive end.

“When I got to Vancouver, the twins, Hank and Danny (Sedin), were both 25 years old. Ryan Kesler was only 22. Kevin Bieksa, Alex Burrows, they were all just young men,” Vigneault said. “We were able to develop them, and they’ve all become really good players in the NHL. And I’m very confident that we can do the same thing here in New York.”

Something has to give. The maximum active roster can only be 23 players.

im guessing onces injuries start to happen in preseason and training camp, Rangers then might move some of their not needed depth to teams that have injury or depth problems... thats what i think Sather and Rangers management are trying to wait it out.. maybe they will get more value in a trade by waiting a bit.

I had a dream last night that we did a deal with Phoenix centered around Girardi and Vrbata. That wouldn't help our forward glut at all, and just add to our right side issues.

It was a crazy dream in other ways too, but that's the only part that applies to here.

I agree
You are probably right
Therefore - in typical NYR fashion - we will now see something like this unfold (from outta the blue):
  • NYR acquire Ales Hemsky & Corey Potter (AHL depth) in a trade from Edmonton for Taylor Pyatt, Arron Asham, Marek Hrivik and a 3rd rounder. Edmonton retains half the salary and cap hit for Hemsky
  • NYR sign Derek Stepan to a 2 year bridge deal ~ $3M
  • One of the NYR RW young guns (Kristo, Fast or Miller) makes the team out of camp
  • Hagelin & Callahan are indeed placed on the LTIR to start season to free up capspace
  • They invite up one of Haley or Mashinter to start year on the big club for some added toughness
  • When Callahan and/or Hagelin are ready (expected by some sources to be sometime in November or in effect after more than 10 games have been played qualifying them for LTIR) - a trade will have to be made. That much is clear. But it will be a head scratcher!

Yikes, from an Edmonton perspective.

Craig Custance of ESPN wrote a feature on each division. Teams trending up,down or neutral.

Trending: Up -- Last season was a strange one for the Rangers, a popular pick to win the Stanley Cup. Instead, they had to battle just to make the playoffs and ended up firing coach John Tortorella. A fresh start under Alain Vigneault plus the return of Marc Staal on defense and a motivated Brad Richards should push the Rangers closer to the top of the Eastern Conference than the No. 6 seed they earned last season. Henrik Lundqvist is the best goalie in the division, and the top four of Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh, Michael Del Zotto and Staal stacks up with any defense in the East.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/blog...ason-how-metropolitan-division-teams-trending

The other teams trending up are Philly and Carolina

Neutral teams are Pittsburgh,Jersey and Islanders

Down trend for Caps and Columbus

In the new format,3 teams in each division make the playoffs with 2 wildcards in each conference.

Boston
Detroit
Montreal
Ottawa
Toronto
Buffalo
FLA
TB

Tallon was public about waiting until later in the offseason and shopping the market then.

Lots to choose from out there right now.

Powe and Pyatt should be the two to be moved. You might need Asham's vet experience and toughness if they feel Haley can't step in for spot starts.

Agreed, P and P should be ACTIVELY shopped for conditional 7ths, just get the cap space --- though I wouldn't turn down an offer for Asham if one emerged. Cap is premium at this point and these are the guys we have to turnover.

We may be able to get that deal with Oilers, but may have to eat a little LESS than half to do it. Still worth it.

Is Miller LW or RW? why am I remembering shoots L? If that is correct are you saying he'd go off wing?
Miller will get here. 1st issue is if his wrist is 110% healed. Then about how much ice time he gets, but he will be here on 2nd or 3rd line soon enough.

Depending upon other moves, Fast will overtake Kristo for that first spot, but both could be here if trades enough spots open up. Agree both Hags and Cally out to start season on IR.

On top of the usual suspects...
Mashinter = overrated. Say buh bye ASAP.
Biron = he was mostly steady ENOUGH but sometimes shaky last year. And we need that 1.3m. I'd give Talbot a shot.

Miller played mostly right wing last season when he played wing. I believe the same is true of his junior career.

The Rangers have too many forwards. 14 one way contracts counting Stepan. Kreider,Miller and Kristo are on entry level contracts too. Lindberg and Fasth are also on ELCs. Leave out those 2 guys. Kreider,Miller and Kristo have performance bonuses. The Rangers can use the bonus cushion to give them flexibility. If the bonuses hit, then those players are valuable contributors. If they don't hit, they don't hit. The Rangers could make room for the bonuses to count this year or roll them over to next season. The cap is going to $70M or maybe more. It won't be that much money to carry over. They aren't maxing out their bonuses. Those guys have upside. It beats watching some of the Rangers forwards provide nothing except give the top forwards a 30-45 second rest.

If Talbot is our backup, Hank plays 70 games again.

Not necessarily.

We should have enough games vs enough teams we can chance it.

And we can start Hank, and where he's given up a goal and there is no shutout to earn, we can have Talbot play a period. Or two half periods, so nobody gets stiff.

In any event Biron is a time bomb.
Acclamating Talbot from sq 1 could be smart.

Assuming that a goalie is ready is just as bad of an idea for that position as it is for forwards or D. If Biron falters and Talbot can step in, great. I'd rather not rely on a more unknown quantity
