Fair enough but that supports my point in the sense of not throwing anyone away.

Lets see what we have, give everyone a chance to play and see what are best team is.

Fair enough, but its pretty plain to see that some of our depth just stinks (Powe, Pyatt, Asham), comes with big question marks (Boyle, Moore, Pouliot, Kreider), or is not very likely to be ready for consistent NHL time (Lindberg, Fast, Miller, Kristo, etc).

With Hagelin and Callahan potentially out to start the season, everything becomes even murkier. In fact, out of the 12 spots at forward available to start the season, I'd say Stepan and Nash are the only "sure things" when it comes to production. Theres plenty of names to potentially fill the other spots, but I have my doubts regarding if they can do it well.

There is no progress regarding talks with Derek Stepan, sources report. Stepan, the club’s first-line center, is a Group II free agent without arbitration rights. Absent pressure points (or an unexpected offer sheet), negotiations with Stepan could well go into September and perhaps bleed into training camp.

Staal didn't get signed until the eve of training camp in 2010.

God forbid Stepan's negotiations go even 1 day into training camp. Half the board will turn on him like they did with Dubi.

They seemed to forgive that stuck-up punk McDonagh pretty quickly so I wouldn't worry about it.

He still doesn't want to be a Ranger. If he was really committed to us, he would've signed a 8-year-deal.

Don't even bring up Chris Kreider. You know how pissed he was at himself when he accidentally deflected that Rick Nash pass in the net in game 4.

Stepan is a much better player than Dubinsky, and generally just more likeable. Dubinsky is a fraud of a 20 goal scorer with a way inflated sense of his own worth.

I seriously don't know how many times I've heard this, but lol the results are always the worst. Kevin Stevens, boy was he in shape. Barrell chested and what not. Redden.

Nah, on a serious note, we definitely can't expect a "good year" from Richards unless we give him an environment to succeed in. Richards has always only really been a standout on the PP, and he has always played a specific role on the PPs he has been on. Ie, playing the right point with a good left handed playmaker down low (Lecavalier in Tampa/Riberio in Dallas) and most of the time with a skilled right handed PPQB on his left side (Boyle in Tampa and Zubov for some time in Dallas, but also others). In NY, especially Gabby, but also Nash, has just not been able to play the part of Lecavalier/Riberio on the PP. We have no PPQB and especially not a right handed one. What do people think? That BR just magically made it happen in Tampa or Dallas? Of course not. You need a state of the art composed PP unit to have a good PP in the NHL today. Look at what people are paying for over the hill +35-contract PPQBs (Gonchar/Streit).

Without the pieces, without hand picked guys with the right abilities and shooting the right direction etc, we will not have a good PP. Without a good PP there is no way Richards score 70-75 pts. He wouldn't have scored that many pts in his best years playing with some great linemates on high scoring teams. You are looking at 60-70 pts from him in a good year and 50-60 pts in a tough year.

That's reality.

It's really really reckless to expect something else (is that what Sather is doing?).

Hockey isn't magic.

1+1 is 2.

I am sure Richards could have scores 90 pts had we bought him out and he signed up with Washington and played with Bäckström and Green (and AO of course). I doubt there are 10 guys in this league who would do a better job in that role. But BR will just never start to set up a left shooting D next to him. He will never be able to play keep away against a NHL PK unit if he only has Nash to work with. MDZ and Stepan are decent on the PP in the NHL, but more or less useless for BR since they shoot from the wrong side. Since they don't match, we just have very little.

Zucc and or Brassard could be a key here, but we would still miss the shooting option from a right handed D. We are not one piece short, but two...

The Rangers PP needs more defined roles. Someone has to be the triggerman and if it's not Richards, then fine. Use Stralman, Moore, heck even Asham has a nice shot.

Hopefully the Stepan thing doesn't drag out BUT to keep a positive light on it, it will give Lindberg more playing time for the first few preseason games and maybe that's all he needs to get ready. Then once Stepan comes back, excellent problem to have.

I think we resign Stepan and Zucc and go with what we have.. Give the kids a shot in camp to beat someone out and then if they do, trade that other player or demote (in the case of asham or powe). Then if the Rangers feel they are a legit contender, make a move or two at the deadline after having a 1/2 season to assess what the players can do under AV.

The Rangers still need to shed money. Whether its trading Boyle,Pyatt or Zuccarello. Powe and Asham should be assigned to the AHL to save $1.85M on the cap if the Rangers can't find takers for them.

how about something around Del Zotto and Kyle Clifford and 1st round pick to Rangers

Dennis Bernstein ‏@DennisTFP 37m
League source tells TFP Kings Kyle Clifford will be shipped out of LA but Habs are NOT in mix in prospective deal "No chance to MTL"

Del Zotto and Mats Zuccarello to Kings for Kyle Clifford Tanner Pearson Colin Fraser and 1st round pick 2014

While what you are saying is true, GAGline's point still stands. Dubi held out and was public enemy #1. McDonagh signed late and half of the board was flippin out and saying **** like we should trade him while he has some value. If Stepan holds out even for a short time this board will turn on him in a hurry. Trust me.

Yeah goodbye Asham and Powe. Pyatt if more relief is needed. Zucca only if we need room for Stepan.

I know this has become fashionable to say but none of these three stink. Powe is a very good defensive forward who on the right team can be an important piece. Pyatt is not an offensive dynamo but he is good along the walls and chips in with a goal here and there and Asham provides toughness and a really good shot. He too plays the game the right way and only helps his team when on the ice. The questions marks are legit and the "not very likely to be ready..." is a statement without any basis. We won't know how ready those guys are until training camp. So, this post is quite a bit too negative.

Yeah, not sure why people expect bottom 6 guys to be 5 tool players. To say Powe or Pyatt stink is just silly.
