watching Brassard's goals, I think he might be the best bet that we have for 1 timers and slap shots. The 1-0 goal against Washington from the line, he scores one against DET on 3/10/13, the goal he scored against us to tie the game 1-1 from the line, just a hard slap shot, 2/18/12 against CHI, 2/03/12 OTG, 01/08/12 against ANA, 04/08/11, 0401/11 against LAK, 03/09/10 against ANA etc. etc.

His wrist shot is the best we have on this team too. Imperfect angle, Seminesque top shelf snipe. His slap shot and overall shot developed pretty consistently. He's pretty damn nimble around the net when he's looking for rebounds etc. as opposed to most of our guys who are basically looking at their feet and swatting away. He's quick to shoot as well.

Significantly better than Step's offensive skill set. Having Brassard on the PP adds a hell a lot of options with someone who can set up plays, go to the net and finish as well as anyone on our team. I think his problem was consistency in CBJ and boy, if that's no longer an issue in NY, Step's presumed 1C status can be gone by the half way point of the season.

This is all quite premature. One post-trade 25 game stretch is not a large enough sample size.

Premature isn't the right word. It's not like Brassard's skillset is going to fall apart next year (hopefully). JCrusty is saying that his skills allow a lot of option. So sample size isn't relative to his points. Brassard's consistency which he didn't have in Columbus is the X-factor.

Mark Fraser has hearing on Tuesday. The briefs were due this morning.

D-man Mark Fraser requests 2M in sal arb case while #Leafs comes in at 855 000. Scheduled for Tues if they don't settle first.

$1,427,500 is the middle.

$660,000 was the qualifying offer.

Zuccarello has a QO of $735,000.

The numbers for Zuccarello should be out tomorrow morning if there isn't a deal done before.

Jim Matheson spoke to Craig MacTavish about Hemsky and trade market.

The market for trades right now is very, very difficult, outside of Ryan and the odd one-for-one like Magnus Paajarvi for David Perron, with the St. Louis Blues looking to shave some payroll.. “It’s extremely soft. Most people like their teams right now. They’ve spent their money. Some are trying to shed guys payroll wise. Everybody has a different financial landscape. There’s lots of guys on the outside looking in (Ryan Whitney, Brenden Morrow, Douglas Murray, all UFAs). It’s a reflection of more supply than demand. There’s little liquidity in the market, not very many buyers,†said MacTavish.

Hemsky has a $5M cap hit and $5.5M salary.

I liked what I saw from Brass alot. But I don't think his future is as much about consistency as it is about going head to head with the better players in this league.

In regards to consistency, I think it comes down to this. You can't attack if you don't have the puck. In Columbus, he played for a team that always was on the verge. Would they as a team get it done? Would they break down? Would they even show up (they were often cut off pretty early)? It's not easy to do the same thing night in and night out if the team around you never does. We were a good team for him, he could do the same thing night in and night out. We have a completely diffrent platform than CBJ.

Is he a star then? A strong scoring forward?

Nah, as he establish himself, pattern will work themselves out. He will start to face the same players night in and night out. We will expect him to not only get by against, but wear top players on other teams down. Sometimes it will be reasonable match ups as is, other times he will be expected to go up against very good players. I think that is the big challenge for Brassard, and a challenge he has yet to even get into.

As it is right now, that is also the big issue with Derek Stepan. He has been effective in the regular season two seasons in a row. But when asked to go head to head against the same center for a best of 7 series, he has been forced to dig down and he has not won a matchup really (while he did darn well against Backstrom this season).

These are challenges Step and Brass needs to take.

Morrow really interests me. He's like Prust with a little more skill. I'm thinking he could be had for $1M/1Y, typical going rate for UFAs of his caliber this late in the summer.

He is getting old. You want guys like that in their 20s. Morrow is 34. Not much to gain there...

Whitney is also a player that still is available.

Those guys could end up signing a one year deal for a contender to go after it again next summer. But, no contenders have room...

Morrow would be a great signing for the Devils, fits their age demographic.

Yes, my theory is that AV wants him and that Raymond is waiting for the Rangers to free up cap.

Eh, the Rangers got their inconsistent sniper when they signed Pouliot.

I too am surprised that he hasn't signed with anyone yet. A combination of asking for too much and teams being up against or over the cap are the two biggest reasons most likely.

Too bad we have to keep and partially hide guys like Powe, Ash, and maybe Pyatt when we could pick up some nice parts for cheap if we werent so close to the cap like Mason, Morrow, Whitney, etc. I expect a lot of eecent vets to get training camp invites and sign for cheap.

not to mention qualifying Zucc so it goes to arbitration.. I'd rather Raymond than Zucc.. unless Zucc peforms like a top 6 guy, where does he fit

I think he's gonna be this years Pyatt, whereas everyone liked the signing at the time then 15 games in everyone wants him gone

Pouilot was a 4th overall pick?... wow did not know that.. hopefully he's a late bloomer lol

I think he'll be somewhere in between. Pouliot is a better skater than Pyatt and he has more competition for a spot than Pyatt did last season. If anything, finally breaking out might be the more realistic possibility :naughty:.
