Shouldn't be perhaps but they will be by Callahan's agent. Brown didn't talk to 30 teams and take the highest offer.

Cap should go up next year. But then players will be asking for more.

I can't see how management lets Callahan walk. i expect he will get a 6-8 year deal. You never know. But he doesn't seem like a guy who has forgotten his roots. Still was driving a Honda SUV on beginnings/24-7.

I'd hate to see Callahan walk or be traded, he's been one of my favorite players on the team for years, but I think signing him to a Clarkson/Brown type contract would be a major mistake.

If I was Sather, I'd prefer a 4 year / $20 million deal. Since that's probably not going to fly with Callahan's agent, the most I'd do is a 6 year $30 million deal. Absolute most. But we will see.

You also have to factor in what Lundqvist's raise will be like... Now that Rask is making $7m a year. Even with the cap going up, Lundqvist will likely net $8+ million per year. I definitely see Lundqvist being signed to something like a 6 year / $48 million contract.

Dustin Brown is one of those guys who I think gets overrated around the league. He's a .6PPG player over his career in the NHL. Callahan is a .56 PPG player over his career in the NHL. Both play a role on the PK, but Callahan's role is larger in that regard. Both are captains. While I think Brown has more natural talent, it hasn't really translated into a vastly superior amount of production.

I'd be really shocked if Callahan's next contract wasn't right in line with Brown's.

Callahan over the last 3 years, 133 points, Brown 140 in about 25 more games, both play every scenario and are good at it, both are 29 and play RW. Brown is a better long term investment because of the health factor but Callahan is right there in AAV

If Miller or Yogan developed the mean streak that Clifford has it would be a major change in their on-ice persona.

Agree, but both project as 2nd/3rd line physical tweeners. Clifford has more snarl but both Andrew and JT have better hands.

Same yearly cap hit? Fine with me. 8 years? No way. I just think theres a very very small chance that Callahan is a productive player into his mid 30's. Nothing against him, but his style of play will catch up with him eventually. I'd hate for it to be in the middle of an 8 year contract.

Ugh, what a bunch of baloney. I love how, in the offseason, all of a sudden it was OK to have young guys in the lineup every night making mistakes in a shortened season. If thats how you coached the team, you'd have been out the door quicker than Tortorella.

That was the problem wasn't it; Torts was afraid to lose games and was more focused on saving his ass, then properly developing the future of the franchise. These guys needed to either be in Hartford or trusted to play at this level. The half measures Torts took with them didn't help the team or the players. So I call bull on the baloney comment. There are other ways to deal with this than chosen by the honorable John Tortorella.

Getzlaf, Perry, Giroux, Letang, Bergeron, Rask and now Brown all got max-term on their contracts. I think it's going to be the going rate to prevent your core pieces from going to free agency. The cap is going to go up, and I'd be willing to bet that by year 3 of his new deal, that cap hit won't be so intimidating.

Unless we see a rookie take a huge leap forward next season, we're going to be in really rough shape up front if we let Callahan walk at the end of his deal. For all of the injury concerns, the guy still plays a huge role in our offense. Are we going to find a 25G/50P winger who can be a top PKer and provide the leadership that he does for less than what Callahan will demand? I highly doubt it.

Exactly. And Callahan plays a physical game. Isn't that what everyone has been crying about, that we lack toughness? Well guess what, toughness and goal scoring come at a price.

No, but you certainly replace the individual parts with two signings for that much annually.

Sign a forward who can replace his scoring. Find a forward that can replace his PK minutes and jam/snarl/grind/balls (hopefully this one can come from within as opposed to UFA).

The problem with finding it all in one package is that the second skillset causes the first to depreciate rapidly.

That's the ticket. GUy might not be the most productive player, but points aren't everything. He brings an energy to every game, and is ALWAYS ready to leave it all on the ice. There's a reason Pierre McGuire brags about him constantly... Most teams would kill for a Callahan. Let's make sure he sticks around.

I'd rather cally then 2 mediocre players

Bad contracts shouldn't set the market.

Maybe they shouldn't set what the Rangers do, but they will set the market. Callahan would have gotten more than either this year as a UFA, and if the cap goes up factor that in to.

I think he will take less, and I certainly hope the Rangers offer less. But it absolutely sets the market.

Given how much the cap is likely to go up, why would we need to? Cally already makes 4.275. Even if he gets the same AAV as Brown, that's not a lot extra to absorb.

You guys are all worrying about what Cally is going to get a year from now and half of you are already pushing him out the door because you expect him to be overpaid.

Cally isn't going anywhere and he deserves every penny of whatever he gets.

If Callahan signs an eight year deal he'll likely be pretty mediocre for the majority of it.

At least with what I described, the scoring will hold up and the PKing will be a much shorter commitment.

I'm not worried about fitting him into next season's cap. I'm worried about from 2016-23.

I've already said I wouldn't do 8 years. I would do the AAV though
