We are emersed in hockey here. We don't notice the difference in exposure as much, but Ryan Miller was all over the main stream media after the last Olympics. If hockey picks up casual fans and increased interest from TV networks, the hurdles every four years are worth it.

"Putting up" with a Russian or Korean Olympiad is an investment. The difference in technology between Seoul or even Nagano is night and day. We can't even guess what will be available in 8 years that will make time differences irrelevant for viewing.

Certainly Ryan Miller is the talk of every causal hockey fan to this day...

Honestly...long term that is not encouraging. Torts did not make MDZ regularly lose his man in the slot or make terrible decisions with the pick in the ozone last year. His recent comments indicate a real question of his mental makeup.

Whether it is next shift, next game, or next season MDZ is gonna face adversity again. Will he be able to handle it? Can't count on a coaching change every time you hit a wall.

True, but since these are both such young players trying just to establish themselves in the league, an overbearing, overly punitive coach can (and did) slow their development by making them afraid to make mistakes. Not a good way to play any sport.

Ugh, what a bunch of baloney. I love how, in the offseason, all of a sudden it was OK to have young guys in the lineup every night making mistakes in a shortened season. If thats how you coached the team, you'd have been out the door quicker than Tortorella.

Callahan can look to Brown as a comparable but Slats may laugh in his face.

Brown is a higher PPG player than Cally (especially in the playoffs), and, more importantly, he has shown an ability to stay relatively healthy when compared with Callahan. Callahan has yet to play all 82 games of a season, something that Brown has accomplished 3 times. There is no way Cally will get an 8-year deal due to injury concerns.

Callahan at 8 years at $46 million would be a major overpayment. I wouldn't sign Callahan for anything more than 4 years, especially with his style of play. Secondly, I wouldn't sign him to anything higher than $5 million.

Callahan earning $4.25 million is a fair contract. He doesn't deserve a raise. He's a top-6 forward, capable of 50 points, 25-30 goal scoring capability, with some intangibles. Anything over $5 million for a player like that is an overpayment.

Sather better not screw this up. If Callahan wants an 8 year deal, let him walk.

His production has gone up every season.

i say trade him for something if he does not want to resign here, rather to let him walk for nothing.... Rangers can get some type of value in a trade for Callahan...

Key pieces are getting 6+ year deals left and right. I think if the team balks at giving Callahan at least 6 years, he'll go to free agency.

And I'd be fine with that. The team doesn't need any more bad contracts. Richards is an albatross of a contract that will eventually be bought out. Nash is currently one of the worst contracts in the NHL at a $7.8 million cap hit for the next 5 years.

Signing Callahan to a 6 year deal, will likely come at a $5 million price tag, will be an overpayment, even with the cap hit going up. He's an injury prone player, who hasn't put up the numbers indicative of a long term deal, regardless of his intangibles.

Just because teams are going out and signing terrible contracts currently, doesn't mean we have to. Clarkson was a terrible contract. Clowe was too. There is no need to add an additional contract like that to this team.

Only way I would give Callahan a 6 year deal is if it's at the same cap hit of $4.25 million. Sure, he can probably fetch $5.5-6 million on the open market, and if he want's that, let him. He will be one of the highly overpaid free agents that hit the market.

Lol at Nash being one of the worst contracts.. Take a look at the deals this offseason for UFA and then try to say a guy on pace last year for 80+ points has one of the worst deals

His production has gone up every season.

Still, when Callahan initially signed his last contract at a $4.25 million cap hit, it was an overpayment. It was seen that he would be a $4.25 million player at signing, and he developed into that player.

The bottom line is, Callahan has never scored 30 goals (despite hitting 29), he's only broken the 50 point plateau once, and he has been somewhat injury prone in his career (despite being the warrior that he is). And he hasn't proven anything in the playoffs yet, to this point in his career.

In contrast, Brown has broken the 50-point mark on five separate occasions, has captained his team to a Stanley Cup, and was a Conn Smythe candidate in that run, while bringing a lot of the same physical elements of Callahan. Brown is also not injury prone.

If Brown took a deal at $5.75m/year, Callahan shouldn't make any more than $4.25-$4.5 million if we are talking about actual value. And if he want's Brown's money or term, we can't afford to keep him, especially with some of the contracts we have.

Again, players like Clarkson, Clowe, etc, shouldn't be a benchmark for us signing Callahan. Those are terrible contracts.

In comparison, Dustin Browbn

Callahan deserves a raise just not 8 years. I think 5 would be perfect.. 26/5. A bout a million dollar bump

Only players making more than Rick Nash

Alexander Ovechkin ($9.5m / nothing needs to be said)

Evgeni Malkin ($8.7m -> $9.5m / nothing needs to be said)

Sidney Crosby ($8.7m / nothing needs to be said)

Corey Perry ($8.625m / Hart Winner, Stanley Cup Champion, still an over payment)

Eric Staal ($8.25m / 7 consecutive 70+ point seasons, Stanley Cup Champion)

Ryan Getzlaf ($8.25m / 4 seasons over a PT/GM, Stanley Cup Champion)

Rick Nash ($7.80m / 1 season over 70 points, 2 playoff appearances (both no shows), Rocket Richard 10 years ago)

Sure, Nash had a solid 48 game season, but let's not pretend that he isn't one of the most overpaid superstars in the NHL. Bottom line is, he is getting paid like one of the top-10 players in the NHL, and he isn't even close to it. So, in terms of value, it's a bad contract. I don't know how you, or anyone else, can't see that. He's getting paid top tier money, long term, and he isn't on those players levels. Can he prove otherwise? Sure, he can. But this season he didn't. An 80 point pace over 48 games is nice, but having 1 goal in 12 games in the post season completely negates it, especially when he wasn't even hurt and admitted that himself (even though fans wanted to convince themselves Nash was playing hurt).

Anyone on here can probably rattle off 30 forwards better than him all making less money than him.

Shouldn't be perhaps but they will be by Callahan's agent. Brown didn't talk to 30 teams and take the highest offer.

Cap should go up next year. But then players will be asking for more.

I can't see how management lets Callahan walk. i expect he will get a 6-8 year deal. You never know. But he doesn't seem like a guy who has forgotten his roots. Still was driving a Honda SUV on beginnings/24-7.
