When did Mersch become this bluechipper bonafide top six prospect? Stop the madness.
Mersch will surprize some people in here and i so can't wait till he does.
I am not a big King fan, but he doesn't ruin the top 2 lines. He is good at cycling the puck and creates opportunities. I agree Mersch is an unknown, but with Carter and Toffoli on the line, and his knack for going to the front of the net like Lucic, he can probably pot 10 goals.
With respect to the third line, I would consider having AA center that line with Pearson and Brown. I could see us getting at least 10 by AA and possibly 15-20 from Pearson. Brown, not sure, but he is good for up to 10 per season lately. Not bad for a third line.
players with NMC have to be protected. The player is immune from being exposed as the team has to protect him. It's not like the team gets an extra protection spot because they have players with NMC.
I like Mersch and think he'll be a regular with the team in the not so distant future, but I also don't have unrealistic expectations from him.
Toffoli and Pearson didn't surprise us in their first rookie seasons with the Kings. I somehow doubt Mersch will do something that is more impressive than those two.
if not Kempe may need protection too.
LA still is in good shape IMO.
I am not saying he going to set the nhl on fire next year but i can see him getting pp time and 2nd line mins by the end of the year. (this is assuming lucic is gone) 10-12 goals He is one of the few kings that will go to the dirty areas to score and for that reason i think he will get the job done
aren't guys on a ELC exempt as well???
He'll be the adequate replacement for Dwight King. I see him having the same strengths and playing the same exact role. I think his skating will hold him back, and no, this isn't a similar case as Luc or Toffoli because those guys are natural goal scorers. Mersch is more of a presence who can create space.
I may be more eager to see what Auger could do. I think he can be competing for a roster spot as well this training camp.
well looking at his career stats hes scored over 20 goal a year for the last 4 years This is in less games then a nhl season I think hes got a knack for being in the right place at the right time.
He's a good scorer in tight, he'll just have to stay there. FWIW, DK put up very similar numbers as a 21 year old in Manchester, so it doesn't always mean much. I expect 10-15 goals out of the guy, just like Dwight. Anything else would be a bonus.
Unless Mersch receives steady PP time, he will struggle even to score 10G. His game is really slow 5V5, it's a glaring issue.
He is somehow slower than Dwight King. Might be due to indecisiveness at the NHL level.
Mersch is all about in front of the net. Period. If he plays with two other guys that are good at getting the flow of play to that area, he will succeed.
Im pretty sure guys with NMCs don't have to be protected whereas guys with NTCs do.... So the NTC will be useless in the expansion draft if the Aces decided to take say Dustin Brown... Per LeBrun

I was reading an article about the Ducks free agents and Jamie McGinns name crossed my mind. If Lucic doesn't re sign I see Lombardi going after a player like this.
Any other free agents that have speed, skill and grit come to mind?

Versteeg is sort of like that. I wouldn't say no as long as the price was reasonable.
Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, McNabb, Greene, Scuderi, Forbort, Gravel. That's 8 defensemen. I think Gravel can still be sent down, and Scuderi can be stashed down in Ontario if need be. Or, just keep 8 defensemen around, and have Scuderi as the 8th guy. I doubt he'll complain.
If you can't sign Lucic because you can't trade Brown or Gaborik, and Toffoli and Pearson need new deals after next year, a couple guys on the McGinn/Versteeg level, on cheaper 1/2 year deals, could be a way to go. Even signing a Dman for 5+ million for multiple years eats away at Toffoli and Pearson money.
I don't expect Mersch to set the world on fire, but let us not forget that Dwight King looked like complete trash in his first call-up and then was not having as good a season statistically in the AHL when called up in 2012 as he did the year prior.
Problem here is I am comparing him to Dwight King in the hopes he is as effective a player (sans last season) as King...and I don't want King anywhere near the top lines.
