That isn't a very good idea either. You have made UFA which means you get offered more money on longer term. But you risk injury to sign a 1 year deal? Which also will cost you money because you have no place to even hide any of the cap hit. Meaning teams pay even less.

I'd take the risk and less money than to sign a big contract with nothing and go to the expansion team. I'm guessing a lot of teams won't be offering NMC because they won't want to lose other players already on the team.

I'll take the guaranteed money and the high probability that I wouldn't be exposed to the expansion draft since I was just signed to a UFA deal.

If you are a player that is looking at a contract with both term and dollars, the likelihood of bombing and getting exposed to the expansion draft v. injury and/or bombing during the 1 year and losing lots of guaranteed dollars has got to be lower.

It's not as stupid in the NFL because of the varying degrees of guaranteed money, even though the injury risk is greater. Betting on yourself on a 1 year deal--or waiting to sign an extension until the final year of the deal expires--can net you a windfall in guaranteed money (Flacco/Revis/Josh Norman) but, in the NHL, all the money is guaranteed so you take it and run. The difference would be negligible in the NHL for a proven player while a proven player in the NFL could see a $20MM difference in guaranteed money.

That's a lot of burger money and I like burgers. I can also be an ******* and refuse to play for an expansion team so they either don't draft me or trade me if the latter is possible per the expansion draft rules.

You make a good point, this summer more than ever you probably want more than one year. For those of you new to hockey some of the recent expansion teams have been horrid, I wouldn't want to be a part of that either.

If you're Lucic, yeah you take the big long contract. But if you're Lewis, you might want to take the 1 year deal. The big thing for guys is going to be full NMC. There is going to be a lot of moves this summer.

The proposed expansion draft rules are going to have those teams be competitive pretty quickly.

Just look at the options they will likely have on defense, they will almost surely have six guys better than McNabb and Scuderi.

Plus, junior aged guys are better equipped to step into the NHL now than they were 15 years ago during the last round of expansion when the league was stuck in the dead puck era.

Yep, and that's the NHL's stated goal, and as much as it's nerve-wracking for other teams, it's a great idea to get them off on the right foot.

The only thing I don't really think is right is the protection of youngsters/prospects, especially those who haven't hit the NHL yet, but I'll also admit those rules seem to have morphed a few times so I'm not even sure what the stipulations are there at this point.

Pearson + for Shattenkirk. Yes? No? Would you?

Seeing as how Shattenkirk would be a UFA I would not add much if anything.

However he also would not need to be protected as he is a UFA so he could hold value there.

I would do it..hurts though cause I love Pearson's game and if Lucic walks LA then loses top 2 LW.

edit: I don't think St. Louis would do it...I think they need help down the middle more than the left side

Throw in Brown so he can replace Backes. Then we sign Backes for less. Makes too much sense!

Hearing Dustin Brown has been told he will no longer be captain of the #LAKings. They want to go in a different direction with the 'C.' #TSN

Mind blown.

Kind of a shame in some ways, it seems the captaincy has just been going to the best player on a given team league-wide. (See OTT, VAN, WSH, NSH and TB (but that will likely change this summer) just to name a few)

Holy ****..........

Wondering why they do this to Brown now. IMO, it decreases his value as a trade chip. I think it's more important to say that LA deals their captain versus LA deals former captain. I guess the counterpoint is this is similar to what SJ did with Jumbo and Pavelski.

In any case, this leads me to believe that they are trying to move him.

Leadership wise, my guess is Kopi gets the C, Doughty gets an A and Carter gets the other A.

Doesn't happen often, and probably even less with guys who have won the Cup with the team they're captain of. Has to be some mixed emotions involved.

I honestly think it's a bad move. Like you said, Brown has actually led them before unlike Thornton. Yes, Brown sucks. But it's not his fault Dean (well I guess it kind of is cause of his contract) can't find defensemen better than Schenn, Scuderi, and McBain.

Not terribly surprising and, no, it does not lower his trade value because his contract has already accomplished that feat.

Seemed to work up in San Jose. I don't think this means he will be traded either because why "inform" him that he won't be captain next season when you can just trade him regardless?

Last gasp effort to get him to play better. Maybe he performs better just being a guy on the team as opposed to wearing the C. Also, guy played his best hockey when he was in trade rumors so maybe this will kick him in the ass.

Goes on to say two will likely be offered AHL-only deals (a la Gravel) but no guarantees they'll accept. Kinda surprised, I thought they were well-regarded as far as deep picks go. I'm guessing they're cutting all ties with Mistele but the contracts are for the other two.
