They acquired Niederreiter a few weeks back.
That's true but I just figured they had the potential to make some noise with some of the D they could have moved to deepen their forward core. Gonna suck when they miss out on the playoffs by a few points.

Gorton's comments about using assets they've acquired recently to speed up the rebuild pretty much tells me that he doesn't expect this team to suck for many more years

And I would assume he probably doesn't have the luxury to think that so

Well no this isn't going to be a 5 year process.

I would caution anyone who is excited to see this team open up the check books this summer to simmer down though. Stones off the market, EK's likely staying in SJ, Panarin will end up in Sunrise - There just isn't anything worth going after unless you want to overpay for the secondary market which would be horrible.

The quotes from Gorton today basically confirm what Friedman said a few weeks ago.

This will be a short rebuild and they will use the assets they've gained in the past two years to move into competing in the next year or so. Be it offer sheets, trading for big players, or opening up the check book for big players.

This is not going to be a long rebuild. Things will kick into high-gear this offseason.

I want Panarin

No thanks to anyone else. If they can't get him, then I'm fine looking towards the summer of 2020

Did Tampa stand pat? I know they're the super team but I'm really surprised they didn't add someone, especially given the market and the pieces they have.

Wouldn't hurt for that squad to add a grinder or some toughness. The stars will take a pounding during the playoffs and you need a response.

When did he say this?

I don't see what he said as falling into that timeline at all. Its hard to really gather what he meant by reading quotes (I'm sure we'll get video later) but I think he means moving more pieces into the roster to get them experience.

If trades are there for young players, great. If we offer sheet someone like Marner and get him from Toronto I will LMFAO until the end of time.

The UFA market isn't really there. We won't get Panarin and all the other big targets are either off or will be off in short time.

At this point I'd like for this team to have just a horrendous rest of the season, and somehow get in the top 5 of this draft.

And then pray Dallas makes it to the WCF and Tampa wins it all
I too would like everything to work out nearly perfectly for the New York Rangers.

Self-rental Ryan Callahan.

I am not so sure it's this off-season.

I'd think they'd try to clean the three S's on D and the Lundqvist cap hit before they go too crazy.

i didn't expect all of Strome, Namestnikov, Nieves, Vesey, Brickley, Belesky, to still all be around at 4pm today
Why
Do you think there's a desperate need across the NHL for the 23rd best teams bottom 6 and AHL fodder?

I think we see a couple of short-term deals signed this off-season, one more sell-off at next years deadline, and then the real work to begin on building a new foundation.

Last year, this year, and next are the seasons they are going to be mediocre and have high draft picks.

That seems pretty evident to me based on how they've loaded up with picks the last two years

You sign Panarin for the season after next, when you have the core in place and start to compete

If we walk out of this draft with Hughes, Cozens or Turcotte then I would favor signing Panarin.

WTF with Carolina how could they not do anything to better their team being so close to making the playoffs for first time in a decade. Are they just conceding that Montreal, Pitt and Columbus is better than them?
They might be run by an HF poster. nEvEr tRaDiNg mY DfEnsemEN haHAA

Unless Rangers draft Hughes or Kakko, I don’t agree with accelerating the re-build. I rather get another top 10 in 2020 and then sign some impact FAs to get a playoff spot in 2021. I feel Rangers still need at least 1 to 2 top-end prospects become they can consider the contending phrase.

On the 31 Thoughts pod.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start getting aggressive with the assets they have.
