Its hard to predict when we will be able to compete when we have no clue as to how the draft will go and whether any of the so called prized prospects we picked the last 2 years turn into anything. So far the draft 2 years ago has been disappointing considering we had 2 first round picks who have struggled. Sure they are young but you need picks like these to turn out to be good otherwise you are not building anything.
I mean, what were you expecting, for these two to put up 50 points at 19/20 years of age? It's not something that happens very often, especially with player selected outside the top 5. What you is see as struggling is really them slowly learning how to be effective in this league, which is a slow process.
As for last year, Kravstov, Miller and Lunkvist are all pretty safe bets to play in the NHL imo... all 3 have qualities that should transfer over nicely when they finally get here. All of the other guys are bigger question marks, but you have to think between Keane, Hajek, Reuanen, Barron and Rykov there are at least 2-3 NHL'ers in that group. And that's not including Shesterkin who's probably the highest rated goalie outside the NHL right now.
Could we be in a better position right now? Of course. But it can also be way, way worse
