I see the conditonal first on Zucc signing with Dallas as a way to ensure he hits free agency so we'll have a crack at resigning him. Seems unlikely that Dallas would have agreed to that term if they planned on resigning him.

IMO this deal works the absolute best if they miss the playoffs this year, sign Zucc, and the wheels fall off next year and we get a really good lottery pick.

How does them missing the playoffs, and us getting their 2nd round pick (say 45th pick) work out better than them going to the WCF and us getting their 1st round pick (around 28th)?

Few things to consider.

Maybe Dallas trade for Brassard from Florida to reunite the two. Brass is an UFA just like Zucc but maybe they decide they want to play together and both sign with Dallas. Dallas has a good team not an a team that’s going to win 2 rounds but a decent team and has a need for an additional center.

Maybe they take a little less to play together in a state with no tax.

Still think Zucc might like Dallas playing with Benn Seguin Rav etc.

Multiple maybe but the best maybe we walk away with one first round pick along with the second.

2 first is a pipe dream but the second first a definitely a possible.

Dallas didn't acquire Zuccarello with the thought that he is a bad player and not worth having long term. Let's start there and have some semblance of reality. Dallas just gave up 2 assets for a rental.

This is a player they have had interest in for a long time. This trade hopefully puts them over the top and into the playoffs. It also gives them a leg up on showing him Dallas, the players, the facilities. They can have conversations. This gives Dallas a head start on signing a player they have scouted before.

The conditions are there because he, by his own admission, played bad when he was unhappy. Dallas needs to vet him as much as Zuccarello needs to vet them. If he plays well, that means both sides are happy and there is a good chance he stays.

I heard a report that John Klingberg was really hyped about getting Zucc to Dallas. He called him a really talented player, but especially noted that Zucc can by a bit grumpy and plays with a lot of emotions -- which Klingberg said was exactly what they needed.

Hopefully Zucc is a match there. That 1st in 2020 can be a difference maker.

Reunanen is a legit prospect, dude! Don't agitate me!

But yeah, it's better to have more prospects on defense and increase our chances at one of them working out.

When you hear like Calgary and Chicago fans talk about their Big defense prospects its hard not to think, ehhh we have a bunch of guys like that. Hajak was the Czech's top D in the WJCs, did great in the WHL and has been solid in the AHL. Rykov was a top D for Russia in the WJC and has become a top D in the KHL at a young age. K'Andree Miller has freak of nature potential (in a sense ;)). Lindgren has a good amature career and played in the WJC for the USA. Nils Lundkvist is going to become a really good hockey player, quite possibly a good NHLer too. And many others who are OK hockey players and could potentially take big steps the coming years.

Keane is a sneaky prospect.
