Ugh. How many more times can they do this and for how long? They’re retaining on at least one other this year, right? Anyone next year?

This is a rich team throwing a few coins to a less rich team. It's a non starter. Has 0 effect on anything since it ends in 6 weeks.

I don't get the anger.

Zucc is having an off year in a buyer's market. This is about as good as it was going to get.

Better than I expected tbh.
A 2nd and a 3rd is good. The fact we even have a small chance at getting 1 1st rounder is great. The ability to potentially get 2 1st rounders is amazing.

No, I don't think they rejected better offers.

I seem to consistantly be underwhelmed by Gorton's returns on selling players, though.

Maybe we can trade Hayes to Colorado with the condition of getting Ottawa's 1st if they go 16-0 in the playoffs
This is very much a sellers market, dont let people in here fool you.
They coulda just got Marcus Johansson for less than this.
Or probably Mike Hoffman who is a better player than Zucc for the same-ish price.

It could, but why would Dallas give up a 1st to sign a 32-year old Zucc longterm? It's not happening.
If they want to give up a first to resign Zucc they would have to view him as fairly foundational. And they wouldn’t give up that first for one or two more years of Zucc. It would have to be a five year deal. Not sure he’s a Five-Year-Deal guy at this point. Just playing things out a bit...

Has little to do with that. Some people just like to complain a crap ton and had their canned responses typed out before a return was even announced.
It has a lot to do with that actually. People were expecting good to great prospects and a pick for a 32 year old rental who is having a down year. It's the McD trade all over again.

And it's meaningless. His contract is up at the end of the year and it's not impacting anything we're doing for the rest of this year. Doesn't mean ****.

Yeah, I think some people don't understand this. I wouldn't have cared if they retained 50% if we had the space. We aren't buying anyone so who gives a vermin sphincter about it?

Let's go through em

Stepan trade - Win
Grabner trade - Win
Nash trade - Win
McDonagh trade - Even, maybe a very slight loss
Zuccarello trade - Even, with potential to be a win

Underwhelmed how?

I'm not sure how many teams are going to be throwing 5 year deals at Zucc this summer. My guess is he could likely re-sign in Dallas for 4 years.

Yes, they can afford it. Of course. But there’s a hard limit on retention. It limits further movement.

You know why this isn't a bad trade? There is a chance Dallas doesn't even make the playoffs. A high second isn't that much different than a late 1st.

Its not like he is going to Tampa or Winnipeg where their 2nd will be in the 56+ range.

Lmao I didnt even thinking about the situation where they miss and still re-sign zucc!

I think I'm actually going to root for that.

You forgot the biggest fleecing of them all.

My point is, if you’re Dallas, do you give up that first rounder for two more years of a guy (any guy)? No way. Three more years? Maybe, for three more years of a sure thing top six player. But I’m not sure if Zucc moves that needle. Four years, sure. But is Zucc a guy a team gives four or more years to? Maybe four years at a discounted AAV. That’s really the only length that makes sense for both Dallas and Zucc I guess. We’ll see.
