Official Francesco Aquilini Thread

I’m honestly still shaking my head that we’ve been one of the worst Most losing team in the nhl over the last 7 years and the owner comes out after winning 4 games (that didn’t even move the playoff needle) and starts trash talking.

What is this guy thinking?

Aquilini being a dumbass on Twitter isn't exactly anything new. I for one welcome the breakdown in relations between Francesco and the press because perhaps we'll actually get some objective coverage from state-sponsored Canucks media. Also, all these people had a role to play in enabling Benning stupidity over the past 8 years; so there isn't really a hero in this story anyway ... outside of maybe Rutherford.

I cannot stress what an absolute failson imbecile this man is.

Just perpetually falling off the turnip cart.
That he makes these weighty decisions is in and of itself horrific. But that these decisions are based on nothing more than breezy chats with a couple of GMs in the league is just... words fail.

He might as well have just googled the answer for all the good it would have done. In fact, that would likely have been a more informative approach.

Yup. Like I said somewhere up-thread - classic narcissistic behaviour. It's because he really believes he has no role in the sh!tshow that happened here.

Reminds me a bit of a certain orange-skinned man from south of the border.

The insane thing here is that Fraq is openly admitting they had no research in place for any kind of Plan B. None. Zero. Not even after what happened last season.

So, either he and his people are a) shockingly lazy or b) just flat out incompetent. Or both.

I'm sorry, you don't go through a season like we did last year and not start to formulate some "what-if" plans.

I get that they committed to Benning and Green again - which is mind-blowing under any circumstance - but one has to think that even the dullest knife in the drawer would be thinking "I better have a back-up plan in place, just in case these two produce more of the same mess."

Nope.

He had *nothing*.

That blows my franking mind.

I don't expect Aquilini's involvement to go down. I also think the constant finger pointing to ownership for allowing the people he hired and believed were experts in their fields to come up with the plan and act on it, is a bit weird.

I would expect a similar ownership - hockey dynamics relationship that we've had, just that it's a more intelligent person with actual skills to "manage" people than the past 8 years.

Frankie is going to be involved, just like the owner is in Carolina (no Dmen in the 1st round is an ownership mandate that is actually defined, rather than to compete or whatever).

Wow, didn't know that. Ironic since they have one of the best D-core in the league (prior to this year)

To paraphrase the great Jim Robson:

He will meddle. You know he'll meddle! He'll meddle on CRUTCHES!

Where has this been reported? At first glance it's true. They haven't drafted a defenceman in the first round since 2016 and Dundon bought they team in 2017/2018.

Haha why is every rich dude so massively insecure? Good lord. Saw Franky's little smirk when Rutherford said "I've never had an owner personally come to my home and speak to me" as if that's not an indication of how desperate he was to find someone who knew what they were doing so daddy wouldn't be so ashamed of his failson.

[MOD] Cannot fathom what it's like to work directly in communication with him.

Yeah, my hope is that Rutherford will be smart and strong enough to compel FAQ to want to listen to him. I think FAQ's meddling instincts are known, and they're not in and of themselves fatal IF you have management that can educate and inspire ownership to follow management's plan, a "help me help you" kind of thing. Problem is Benning very openly didn't plan beyond "day to day" so how could he convince ownership that they had to think long-term when Benning himself self-admittedly didn't? And as much as we debate how relevant Benning's public communication skills are, if they're a reflection of his overall ability to communicate, well, he's not inspiring confidence to us so why would we think he'd inspire confidence in ownership?

In the end I think Benning didn't have a plan and if he did he wouldn't be able to sell anyone on it, and hence ownership imposed their own views which Benning managed to fumble.

The funny thing is Rutherford hasn't done a single thing yet. All reports are Aquilini hired Boudreau himself.

i really hate the media is so negative bull crap. like others have said we had these Pejorative Slurs defend benning and green for years.. and fans ate it up like flies on crap

Thing is, I'm not 100 percent certain that FAQ was the guy who actually hired Rutherford....I think the Aquilini's are realizing that this gong-show of a franchise was dragging the family name down with it. And they've reeled Francesco in and collectively hired Rutherford.

Everybody's been saying for years that the Canucks desperately needed a top hockey executive to take control of the franchise and run the hockey ops side of the business without the irritating meddling by the infantile owner. Looks like the message finally got through.

Rutherford walked away from Pittsburgh because he felt he was losing autonomy. So he'll hardly be willing to surrender it here. At his age and with his resume, he'll take a hike if Francesco tries to resume his meddling ways. Finally!

Just like when Fredo was banging cocktail waitresses two at a time and got bitch-slapped by Moe Green, you need Michael to come in and clean the mess.

Yeah, pretty sure it was Francesco behind the latest signings.
I'm pretty sure he's behind all of the signings. Pursuing Ekman-Larsson for over two years, while losing out on Tanev, Toffoli and Marky during the process. Ekman-Larsson has one of the worst contracts in the league, what the heck right!?
I just picture Aquillini screaming at Benning " I want OEL, and I want him now!!!. You know like the annoying kid on Charlie and the Chocolate factory lol.

I can also imagine Benning having scouted OEL in U20s and really liking him and that is why he went after him in 2020.

Remember. Aqua was very involved with the analytics and science based processes of the Gillis era.

We will actually have to "wait and see" for a while before we get this talk going again.
