Yeah I mean Verizon was giving away free iPhone 7's last year at launch??? There is a ton of competition right now and the phones are used as acquisition and retention tools. With fewer people in contracts they almost have to.

Agreed. Right now, there isn't much separating them. They're all about the same cost. Some will throw a temporary incentive like T-Mobile's free Netflix (Yay...thanks for picking up that $8). But in the end, someone will go all in on that X.

I didn't catch it but apparently face id wasn't working during the presentation and they just put in the passcode? Lol.

Edit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/6zp1gi/faceid_fails_on_the_first_try_in_apple_event/

It did work, but not the first time. Looks very awkward the way he had to put it up to his face (and it still didn't work).

Would be shocked if they don't go back to touchID as soon as its affordable.

FaceID is not even that secure anyway. Maybe Apple implementation will be better but on the S8 all you have to do is take a pic of yourself , put it in front of your phone and it will unlock. I did the test personally with a picture of me i had from last year and it did unlock my phone after 2 tries.

You are better off with the Iris scanner which is faster and more secure. Or the good old fingerprint scanner. I don't really trust FaceID

A cop could literally just take your phone and point it at your face and get you to look and it'll unlock. They don't need to force you for a finger printer or password or anything.

Of course a cop could do that but in general it's easier to take a pic of someone while he is not aware or scan one of his pic of facebook or whatever and then use said pic to unlock his phone than to physically force someone to look at the phone so that it will unlock via Iris scanner.

Truth is no methods are completely secure. All im saying is that Iris scanner and fingerprint sensor are better options than the FaceID. I have all 3 on my S8 and Iris Scanner is by far the fastest and best of the bunch

You didn't watch the event obviously. They talked about pictures not working, tested it and demo'd it. They even made Hollywood style masks for people. Everyone knows the S8 facial recognition is not good.

My friend mentioned this. What's the difference between putting a finger on it. Does it violate your rights? I guess if you're a criminal maybe it's not the phone for you. What about somebody doing it while you're sleeping...significant other.

That's why i said that Apple implementation of FaceID may be better. On the S8 it is indeed not very good you won't get an argument from me on that. It's also slower than both Iris and Fingerprint sensor. Samsung did say that their FaceID tech was pretty secure when they presented the S8 but it ended up being fooled easily. Apple probably learned from this. Remain to be seen if people will be able to find a way to fool it as well

But all in all i still prefer the Iris Scanner. It's just more convenient imho. Only downside is that it doesn't work well in direct sunlight so you have to ressort to password or pin when outside.

I don't mind the fingerprint scanner but according to Apple it's more likely to let a random person in than the facial. I don't know how that's possible.

Only problem with the fingerprint sensor is it gets gummed up and doesn't work at times. I want to see some YTube reviews on it where they get to test the hell out of it.

We have heard many stories about kids using their parents fingers while they sleep to unlock their phones. Now they don't even have to touch them. Just point the phone at their face.

Well, I guess if you're that afraid of cops making you unlock your phone or someone unlocking while you sleep, the 8 has similar guts but with TouchID. Though I assume you can probably turn off the FaceID all together and just pick a code.

I'm not worried about the cops, lol. But it brings up interesting questions such as the attack in San Bernadino where they couldn't unlock the guys phone. In this case they cold when he's in the morgue assuming he wasn't disfigured. Like always, this is pie in the sky stuff that won't apply to 99% of people.

Not all OLEDs are made equal. The OLED in your OnePlus probably cost less to OnePlus than Apple's old LCD cost for the iPhone 7. No offense, but there OLED in your phone is likely a low end one, and it's smaller. I don't know where OnePlus gets their screens from but there are several Chinese manufacturers making low and medium quality OLEDs, so they may be getting them from there. Apple is and will only buy the high end panels,

I really wish I could argue that Apple is overpricing one of their products again, because that's what they do. But that is not the case now.

They OP founder said their screens are Samsung's Super Amoled displays with OP own customization (colour temperature, etc...). I frankly don't see an obvious quality difference between my OP screen and one in Samsung phones. Perhaps Iphone X is a different, more expensive, beats.

Even if they're Samsung doesn't make it the same as in the X. The OnePlus isn't a very high end phone I can't imagine it's the same panel as in the flagship Samsungs.

In the early side-by-side comparisons, the only Samsung advantage I've seen is screen resolution. Though I have yet to see the X's battery specs.

IP 68 vs IP 67 certification for the X
Headphone Jack
Micro SD card slot`
Iris Scanner
Price

And if you count that as an advantage more customization options (3rd party launchers etc)

On the other hand what the IPX has on the S8

- Dual cameras
- 4k video recording at 60fps
- 1080p at 240fps
- Stereo Speakers

So no it's not just resolution ;)

Lightning jack is fine and if you're really that uptight about charging while listening, there are cheap adapters

The iris scanner doesn't seem any more convenient

Is the SD slot back? I thought they removed it.

With the A11 chip blowing any Android phone away, the price increase is just fine

Just fine for some. I'm not sure anything done on an iPhone could stress an A10 chip, but those A11 chip speeds are bananas. Too bad we can't run it in desktop mode to take advantage of all that power.

And if you want fast charging via USB? Another $108 CDN please.

What ? Are you telling me that for 1000$ US for the 64 gb version or 1149$ U.S for the 256 gb version you don't get a usb c fast charger included ?

If true that's just.....When i say that i don't like Apple pricing strategy this is exactly what i mean. You pay a premium price for a device and on top of that you need to spend even more for something that should totally be included in the box so that you can take full advantage of your device features

Now i will stop posting in this thread before being called a Apple hater but man....

Haha! Yup. I'm heavily invested into most things Apple, but the amount of scamming that Apple does to its customers just drives me nuts. They truly have no shame.

It's going to be interesting to see if the iPhone X will be the iconic status symbol phone that Apple has been craving since the original models. You could see that while they loved owning the majority of the market share in North America, they want the insufferable phone snobs back in their corner.

I think I'd be more annoyed with the X. I need to unlock my phone via fingerprint, away from my face, in the dark, in my car dash cradle, while raising it to eye level, etc, etc. I disabled the pin input on my iPad Mini 2 because it was a nuisance. I'm sure as hell not using a face scanner.

Really looking forward to iOS 11 though. It's like the free "participation medal" gift everyone gets while the lucky few spend their cash for the new devices.

Headphone jack as a negative...lol. Is this 2016? The thing Apple has always done early is realize when certain tech was obsolete and position their products correctly moving forward. Why would I ever use wired headphones again, they are annoying. The adapter was always shipped with the 7 anyways. Remember when the Macs ditched disc drives..

There are always minor details but I'll never go to Samsung for the following reasons unless they change. Frankly their build quality and support is not as good.

If I ever have an issue there is a retail store I can walk in to and they will either fix or replace my phone no questions asked. I can understand not shipping with a fast charger.... but what charger is coming with the X. Wireless pad or lighting jack.

Headphone Jack - Nobody cares anymore
Micro SD card slot`- People still use these.... why????
Iris Scanner - Seems to work really well
Price - You get what you pay for.

Really? I mean... I'm on the Apple train, too, no problem, but SD slots... come on. That's pretty big. If I had a 64 GB Note 8 and was going somewhere... anywhere... I could just load a whole bunch of shows and movies on a micro SD card that costs maybe $20-$40 and have all that on my phone in an instant.

I'd love a micro SD slot addition so I could expand my storage quickly and easily without paying an extra $100-$250 per size bump.

Yeah I load shows and movies for traveling on my HD. How much stuff do you need for a trip??? A mirco card is another device to lose and keep track of IMO. You have everything you own in the cloud. I think when HD's on phones were smaller this was an issue.
