I was at work so I couldn't really reply to the poster who replied to me about the apple watch. The thing that I have against the watch is I don't really know what purpose it would serve for me. I own an SE but I was actually reading up on the watch when I got home and I do like the whole cellular thing being offered. That means I could barely even touch the phone and just work with the watch. Does the watch play music, because I know it plays podcasts which I would like. Also, if it is a fitness thing, that might be worth the investment.

In terms of the phones released today, man in a few years smart phones will be out of my price range. The reason I bought the SE and love the SE is because it's a cheap but powerful phone that's compact enough to still actually be a phone. I mean a felt the 6 and 6S and both felt just really big. I guess I'm just used to the whole idea of a phone still looking like a phone, meaning compact enough to fit in a jean pocket and held with one hand. I hope they come out with an upgraded SE next year because next year will be 2 years with this phone and I'm debating if I want to keep it (Which it still works so that's good), get an upgraded Apple phone, or just go to Android to reach into that ecosystem.

The watch 3 will obviously be able to stream music from any site you like. It also will hold saved music and playlists like the 2 does now. Meaning even now you can leave your phone behind and have music, just not streaming but the 3 will solve that problem.

The fitness aps for the watch are pretty good. They all seem to link to the health ap fairly well. I have the #2 not and when I'm at home it's not unusual for me not to have it near me anymore due to the watch.. Also this small feature is like gold... you can ping either one of them if you can't find them. It's amazing.

Except all the same stuff on the S8 doesn't work well....

Is there where I say, Typical Samsung where you pay for features that won't work and you stop using.

Not sure what features you are talking about but my S8 works totally fine with everything.

Bixby sucks and the fingerprint sensor placement is terrible but aside from that it's A1. iOS may be a bit more fluid compared to Nougat but aside from that you are paying essentially for the same stuff (bezeless 5.8 OLED HDR screen , facial recognition , 12 mp camera with OIS , Samsung/Apple Pay , wireless charging etc)

Hardware wise the only advantages the IPX has is dual cameras , a more optimized proprietary processor and 240 fps recording. On the other hand the S8 has IP68 waterproofing vs IP67 on the IPX , an headphone jack and an higher screen resolution.

Is the IPX going to be a great phone ? I have no doubt that yes it will but 1500$ CAN for a slightly more fluid UI performance and dual camera for the 256 gigs version is just ridiculous. The difference between the two phones is not worth that difference in price tags IMHO.

Btw as i said i don't want to start a war and i'm not an Apple hater or anything but i'm just saying it like i see it. If it was the reverse and the S8 was 1500$ i'd say the same thing about Samsung ;)

The reason for the price difference has been discussed at length. You act like it's Apple jacking the price for no reason, as indicated in your OP.

Apple products are pretty much always more expensive than the norm so it's not anything new really. IPhone 7 was close to 1000$ before taxes at launch while sporting a 4.7 inch 720p LCD display and a 1950mah battery. You could get better on some android devices for 200-300$ less

I don't hate apple and IPhones are great devices. Apple are very good at optimizing their stuff. But i don't like their pricing relative to the hardware you get vs the competition. Never have and never will. I criticized google pixel pricing when it came out for the same reasons as well.

As i said i'm just calling it as i see it. If Samsung or LG or whoever start pulling the same shaeniegans i will call them out as well.

Don't want to start a fanboy war but this is basically 1530$ for pretty much the same stuff that's found on the S8 that is 700$ less.

Typical Apple where you pay for the brand name.

I'd still rather buy an iPhone than a Samsung. I trust Apple to take care of my product if something happens to it. I don't trust the other brands or carriers to take care of it.

I trust Apple to give me at least 4 years of updates, whereas even Samsung is lucky to get two in a decent time.

Samsung has some great features, but I still trust Apple in the grand scheme of things when it comes to post-purchase.

The Note 8 is also priced at $1,325 in Canada. That's what I'd say the comparable is. Samsung Galaxy S8+ is $1,115 in Canada.

Only the X.

Which is why it's so much pricier IMO.

Once OLED is more mainstream, I don't believe the X or future phones should cost anywhere close to this much.

It's because each OLED panel is from Samsung and they're $120-$130 per panel compared to $40-$50 that the previous panels were.

When Apple can get a second supplier (they invested $2-billion in jumpstarting LG's division, I believe, but that will take time) I think you'll see the price come down. Of course people buy the iPhone X in droves. In which case, that price will be here to stick.

I recently busted the screen (AMOLED) on my OnePlus 3, and OnePlus quoted me $80CAD for a replacement (+ shipping and installation costs). I have a hard time believing that Apple is paying $145USD per screen. I suspect OnePlus has the same supplier, Samsung.

Not all OLEDs are made equal. The OLED in your OnePlus probably cost less to OnePlus than Apple's old LCD cost for the iPhone 7. No offense, but there OLED in your phone is likely a low end one, and it's smaller. I don't know where OnePlus gets their screens from but there are several Chinese manufacturers making low and medium quality OLEDs, so they may be getting them from there. Apple is and will only buy the high end panels,

I really wish I could argue that Apple is overpricing one of their products again, because that's what they do. But that is not the case now.

Galaxy S8+: $1,115 CAD.
iPhone X 64GB: $1,319 CAD.
Galaxy Note 8: $1,325 CAD.
iPhone X 256GB: $1,529 CAD.

Gross Canadian price of the 256 GB X, this is generally the direction of phone prices, but the iPhone X is a victim of Apple having to pay over 100% more than they were per panel of their LCD display.

I don't know why Apple puts their own mark up on the Canadian price. I understand our dollar is still lower than USD, but it's rebounding. This is priced at what it was when the dollar was in the low 70s.

Those "high end panels" are still cheap. Don't kid yourself. These phones probably cost a few hundred to make. This is savage overpricing, because they can.

Nobody in the U.S. is paying full retail price for a phone...

Doesn't Apple have that plan in the USA where people can just subsidize the phone through Apple themselves and then take it to any carrier? Not to mention other carriers having plans that let you upgrade every year in the USA, plus much cheaper plans in general compared to Canada...

Yeah you just pay a monthly installment. For instance I have AT&T and they have 1 to 2 year options. Thing is you can trade in when you're at 50% paid.

Now you think if you out right owned the phone your Bill would be X cheaper because you have no installment but it's not. There is also employer discounts, combined stuff with your Internet and TV.

I went from a contract on my 6 to the ATT installment plan with the right to trade in every year to the newest phone. I wanted to put down $200 so my bill would be exactly the same but the launch of the 7 was a mess and they couldn't take CC payments. My bill went up just under $18.00 per month. I knew the 8 would be a large update.

Now I could buy my 7 out and sell it or just get the new one. Will the cost be higher I'm sure but it's not like people plop down 1k or $800 every time they get a new phone. I also expense 80% of my bill for work.

So the X at that price on the 12 month is going to cost $44ish on top of what every plan you have. That's if you don't have any other discounts, bundles, ect.. 24 month is going to be lower. With how much use my phone gets 2 years is just a really long time now. I've never kept one that long.

Try again, contracts are all but phased out.

Doesn't sound much different. So you're still paying money on top of your bill for the installments, minus the trade in value of the previous phone?

What are the options for somebody who doesn't own an iphone 7 they can trade in already?

I didn't catch it but apparently face id wasn't working during the presentation and they just put in the passcode? Lol.

Edit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/6zp1gi/faceid_fails_on_the_first_try_in_apple_event/

It did work, but not the first time. Looks very awkward the way he had to put it up to his face (and it still didn't work).

Would be shocked if they don't go back to touchID as soon as its affordable.

It didn't work because someone forgot to enter the password on the phone after having restarted it to enable the face ID.

I saw a video last night of someone testing out the phone and it would unlock pretty easily.
