Holy. ****.
$1908 with AppleCare+ and tax (Ontario). **** that noise. That's a MacBook Pro right there. Or a god damn TV.

No doubt. I don't disagree at all. Just the people and Apple themselves acting like this is brand new and amazing when people have been experiencing it for years.
Completely disagree. Microsoft Kinect was doing IR and dot scans for a long time. Like HawkFan pointed out though, they just do it better. And they are able to do it better by just doing your face. Kinect was doing everything in a room. It was quite capable of getting more detailed but again, got no support. However there were companies that unlocked this tech to do some really cool stuff with it but it wasn't mainstream. There was no need for it to be more detailed in the face. This is a phone. It's using tech that has been around for along time. It's just that it will hit more people because its an Apple iPhone.
I don't see how any of this is "far superior". They are just making it more mainstream. Again, that's what Apple does and they are masters at it.

FaceID is there as the only way (along with passcode) to get in because they couldn't get TouchID under the screen.
But yeah, there's no way I could ever justify paying $1520 before tax for a phone. None. If I were upgrading this year I'd definitely be getting the 8 or 8+ on contract.
I wonder if the X has a software feature so video doesn't look ugly as hell with that top strip cutting into it.
Did the 8 go to OLED too, or only the X?
Another thing: I have an Android phone, but from reviews I like the Apple Watch as a sports (running) watch. Does it make sense to have an Apple watch without an IPhone?

Only the X.
Which is why it's so much pricier IMO.
Once OLED is more mainstream, I don't believe the X or future phones should cost anywhere close to this much.
MMM... i guess you could but the cool thing is messages and calls you can take right now from your watch. The running ap, I mean you would be confined to viewing everything on the watch which doesn't provide as much info. I think it would be annoying. The entire point is to sync with the iphone health and data.
Is the OLED technology the same as the AMOLED? I have an OP3 with AMOLED and it costs 1/3 of an IPhone?

Can't you use, for example, the Strava running up on the watch and then see the info on the Strava running up on the Android or desktop? Hmm, I guess it depends on how the watch uploads the info? Via an Iphone, or a direct connection to internet?
Only the X.

Yup. Doesn't justify the price increase at all, imo.
It's because Apple doesn't manufacture their own panels. They have to buy them from Samsung (they literally have no other option, for this year at least). They could buy their old panels for as low as $45, while their OLED screen is speculated to cost about $145 a panel. Samsung has zero reason to give them a hefty discount either, as OLED production can't keep up with demand. It's possible Apple is paying the most for OLED panels among any smartphone manufacturer.
I'm the first one to criticize Apple pricing schemes, but honestly, it's likely they're making less of a profit on iPhone X than they will on the iPhone 8 and 8+. In fact, I'd say it's almost certainly the case. I don't want to come across from defending Apple, they're way late to the party when it comes to adopting OLED, and I think MacBook's are the some of the most overpriced products on the market. But they could have realistically priced the X $100-200 more and they'd probably sell the exact same amount.
I recently busted the screen (AMOLED) on my OnePlus 3, and OnePlus quoted me $80CAD for a replacement (+ shipping and installation costs). I have a hard time believing that Apple is paying $145USD per screen. I suspect OnePlus has the same supplier, Samsung.
Don't want to start a fanboy war but this is basically 1530$ for pretty much the same stuff that's found on the S8 that is 700$ less.
Typical Apple where you pay for the brand name.
But it's not the same screen.
