If you’re taking a defensemen early to me their skill level & offensive ability have to be higher end. It just seems in that range the guys who are generally described as well rounded or whatever usually end up more times than not being underwhelming compared to guys who nobody really questions their skill/offensive abilities.

To me that seems like Buium & Parekh.

Go get Parekh and Catton and drop the mic.

True but I’d also be ok with the smart players out there. Dickinson and Helenius do seem like more the type to push a team with a 1C and 1D to to the next level. But I love those players that have a high impact when on the ice. I also think Dmen can be more offensive in the right system and with the right players. Makar and those elite types for sure, but do you really want a Green that isn’t able to get it done in the end?

I want Catton or Eiserman but if not I’d be good with Dickinson and Helenius. Just going to have to hit next year for top line/top pair

The reason the Flyers-Nolan Patrick discourse makes me groan is because, with the benefit of hindsight, people say, "Why didn't they select this obviously more talented player? Why did they choose the safe player? They should have known better than consensus. Shame, shame!"

But when confronted with the next crop, the safe players -- with a sprinkle of wish fulfillment pixie dust -- are again lauded. Hands clasped together praying to take them. We do this every year. And in 5 years we'll get, "Why didn't they select this obviously more talented player?" I could easily see 5/12 of the first players taken falling into this category. Given the scuttlebutt, possibly 2nd and 3rd overall. Certainly worried about the top consensus forward and defender at #12.

My best guess on picks 1-12

1. SJS Celebrini
2. CHI Demidov
3. ANA Levshunov
4. CLB Buium
5. MON Lindstrom
6. UTAH Iginla
7. OTT Parekh
8. SEA Dickinson
9. CAL Catton
10. NJ Sennecke
11. BUF Eiserman

So, that leaves the Flyers at 12, who do they take?

If the board breaks this way, my personal preference would be Helenius but my guess is they take Silayev or Yakemchuk. Not that I don’t like the big the Russian or Yak, but both are far from a sure thing. Now, there is a good chance they’ll be a trade or 3 and this won’t be even close to how the actual draft goes, but if all picks stay as is, it’s my best guess.

How do you guys think it will go?

I think until it happens it’s a crapshoot. I can’t remember many drafts like this where a player could go 3rd or 12th and it wouldn’t be a complete shock

This is truly my worst case scenario. I would take Silayev or trade down at that point.

Need Iginla to fall for Calgary to take. Utah already rumored to get a top dman so they seem in that mode. Catton could be redundant for them. In that scenario I think we get Catton.

I have a feeling Sennecke will go to Montreal.
I saw a report awhile ago that said he was high on Montreal's list and they were contemplating taking him at 5.

I don't know how it goes, but in that scenario, yeah, give me Helenius. If they absolutely must take Yakemchuk, I'm begging for a trade with Minny to also get 13, so we just take both.

If we are picking between one of Eiserman, Helenius or Yakemchuk what do we do? Helenius seems like the safe pick. For those that have seen Eiserman play, could the uncertainty about him be related to a lack maturity: both mental (confidence, awareness & patience) and physical (strength & cardio) due to his young age? As Magua points out, he is 2/12 weeks away from not being eligible for this draft. If he had a September 16th vs August 29th birthday, he falls into the 2025 draft where he’d be a consensus top 3 pick. Tempting if there and Catton and other favorites are off the board.

Would be surprised if one of Catton, Helenius or Yakemchuk isn’t our picks assuming we draft at 12. Top 6 C or top pair D potential.
