I feel like we expend too much energy talking about trade-ups in the top 10 when they never happen. Was 2008 the last top 10 trade down for picks? At best, every several years on average, you're getting a team knowingly trading a 7-10 pick for NHL pieces. The rest are unprotected pick debacles 12 months in advance. NHL GMs have death grips on these picks.

Barring a once in a blue moon trade for a faller, I'm not even sure why pick consolidation is the preferred method right now. They have needs across the board. I'm taking as many shots as I can. From my viewings in the fall, I'm not even seeing "that guy" I'm spending multiple 1sts to acquire. Maybe I'll feel differently when I get back to watching, but see paragraph 1.

Top 5 picks never refuse to sign with their teams either. :sarcasm:

Yeah. I'd much rather take 3 swings in the first round than put my trust in them to find THE GUY at 6 or 7 (which I don't think there is one today). Maybe if you thought one of the defensemen were can't miss, but with Drysdale, how many resources can you dump into the position? Now if you have Gauthier's rights on the draft floor, maybe it's a different story. With the chips already cashed in on Gauthier though, the Flyers are low on premium assets for a big trade. They have to be pretty prudent with their moves from here on out (exhale).

Michkov - who they won't trade unless things go off the rails again
Hart - but the scandal still looms
TK - going into his walk year

York?
Tippett?
Frost? (lol)
Laughton for the 5th offseason

Maybe they'll sell one of Walker or Seeler at the deadline but that's a day 2 pick most likely.

As a footnote, Briere in his availability pretty much said they were looking for a Center or Defensemen in return for Cutter. Not that there was much doubt, but it seems they still have a pretty outdated approach to positional value even though their best player has been a 5'10 winger.

Timur Kol is a guy trying to watch a fair bit of.

Has some beautiful skating at a time for a guy who is 6'3 and 200lbs... though I think can get better still.
One of the biggest shots in the 2024 draft.
Makes good decisions both in DZ and OZ.
One of the youngest players in the draft.

I would say he might have top pairing upside... but his puck-handling is pretty "meh" and just a solid passer. But still, a lot to like for a guy who is ranked as a "C" skater.

Would be someone I'd be very interested in in 2nd round.

Catton down to 13 - creeping closer to our range. And Mews at 28, obviously.
This isn't your dad's WHL but pretty good company:

Parascak is at 1.50 right now as a rookie which is absurd. Might be riding some coattails though.

Man, what the hell went wrong with Nic Petan?
Big beneficiary of those Mike Johnston Portland wagons they had for ~half a decade. He couldn't do it in the NHL but he runs a hell of a Junior system, still. Maybe peaked too soon also. Bjorkstrand was the same age and passed him by the time they turned pro.

Petan is in that deadzone of too good for the AHL, but probably not enough raw talent and without a diverse skillset to be an established NHLer. Maybe in the right window or system he could have been. Definition of a fringe NHLer.

For a 5'9 second round pick, to hang around the NHL for nearly a decade, if that's the worst outcome, that's probably a pretty good bucket to bet on.

I haven’t watched Catton since October. Would like to circle back. His burst is straight up plus. I remember wishing he manufactured more chances in my 3 games or whatever — he was more of a play connector than one man show. I also remember thinking Spokane just wasn’t that good besides him (that part looks true). Still one of my better watches.

He wasn’t bad, but he 100% looked like a coattail rider when I watched early on. Not a very good skater, pigeon type.

Skill issue. I watched exactly one game against Kelowna and he put a defenseman's jock in the rafters.

Parascak has the best EV production of any CHL/USHL player this season... well, when I checked a few weeks back. (Misa might have gone past him...)

Was at 1.10... which is basically "these prospects dont miss, ever" range.

BUT his skating really is bad. Not Cheechoo bad but the type of bad that limits upside to probably a 2nd liner unless massively improves.

Speaking of "these prospects dont miss, ever" range EV production.

Zayne Parakh is at 0.86 EVP/GP. Unreal.

Mews is 2nd amongst the CHL/USHL D crop with 0.64.

3rd is Yakemchuk at 0.59
4th is little known Tory Pitner at 0.57
5th is Dickinson at 0.54.

Really interested to see where Jiricek goes. Him AND Kiviharju both missing half their draft year when two of highest ~7 upside Dmen in draft could mean a fall for both.

I have never had him in my personal top 10 for this draft... he is not his big brother. Not close at same age.

BUT he does have a lot of potential.
And now with the injury on top of it?

I think at say ~15, might not be BPA... but if he falls much lower than that would think about it.

It does concern me with him that even before the injury he was probably the 3rd best Czech Dman in draft in terms of "current" ability. Galvas and Badinka are both better players right now... even though Jiricek's upside is way above them.

Someone is gonna steal Freij. Misa at 45 wow.

Eiserman at 8 is mental
As is Mews so low.
Artomonov being behind some of the guys ahead of him is laughable.
No Timur Kol (39th) or Noel Fransén (UNRANKED, bahahaha, guy just scored his first SHL goal, in draft season!) when some of those Euro Dmen are on there as well aha. Like, did they just not watch them?

But then again at this point Central Scouting have proven worse results than basically everyone.

Have you ever looked at studies around older/younger players in their draft year? Ie. is Eiserman being young a plus?
