I felt Reaves was fine enough for preseason.
I think he will be almost completely spent after this year tho, he’s only borderline a passable 4th liner atm. He wasn’t good but he wasn’t a giant liability either and his presence is felt

I remember when making the team meant players were on the 4th line and as you developed you moved up the line up, not unlike a apprenticeship. If players weren’t defensively competent they were sent down to the minors to start the climb back to the NHL. It’s no wonder players of old were good at all aspects of the game…….

Yeah, for the most part those days are gone.

No one is looking at Minten thinking he's going to start on the 4th. line and work his way up to replacing Matthews.

My guess it is such a factory today that they look at the skillset and determine very early this is a bottom 6, middle 6, top 6 and put the player there.

Well said & for the most part(like you said) i think thats true. But at times as we've seen opportunities open up after ie; FA leaves, injuries happen during season and bottom 6 players like this are pushed up in the lineup and playing with more skilled players & there offense comes out, they step up to another level. Its a beautiful thing to see. And its also why I personally think he should be eventually sent back(maybe give him the 9 games but there again will he be put in a position to succeed? Will he see the press box? Who knows) and let him be a top guy and build up his confidence more.
He and Cowan seem like guys you know are going to listen and work on the things they're told, while getting stronger.

Could be right but I usually give vets like that the benefit of the doubt during training camp. They know they have a spot so often dont over exert .

A cheeky option if we really want to give Minten an extended look will be to sign Gregor for higher than we otherwise would, say $1.1 million, and waive him and hope his higher salary will scare off any vultures who would pick him off the waiver wire if we signed him to league minimum.

It's very interesting that McMann wasn't waived. Hopefully this doesn't indicate they aren't signing Gregor

You might be right, but if Reaves is a diminishing force nearing the end, I wouldn't expect him to use his remaining ammo in pre-season either... so we'll probably still see some effective moments throughout the season.

I would claim Bogosian... was proposing a Jones for Bogosian trade between Toronto and Tampa but instead of cooperating we can just mutually hurt each other on waivers. Bogo can probably still do a lot of what Schenn did in a pinch for us but won't have the hype factor.

Bogosian would be interesting. Been here before and adds good veteran grit. Doubt he’d be happy about it given he ran back to America ASAP after 2021 but it’s not like he’s got a choice in the matter now.

Really liked Bogo when he was here. Definitely wouldn’t mind him here again on the third pair in a limited role.

Well, 2023 is also a different world to 2021 so hopefully it works out. Bogo is from Massena, New York so he's basically as close to being an Ontario guy as you can be without being one...

I think the Leafs keep Holmberg up and send down Minten.
Not sure that's such a good idea. Minten already looks better, and you can easily give him some more games to see if he can actually handle it and recall Holmberg if not. But if you just give the spot to Holmberg, you lose out on Minten for the whole year
