Looks like they will play the young squad. Not sure why but I guess it doesn't really matter.

The pre-season is way too long if the last game you just basically play a bunch of AHLers and Junior players.

Remember Fred Boimistruck? Let's avoid having that experience again. Give the kid a chance to develop out of the spotlight.
Remember a ton of young players who had big preseasons. These aren't NHL lineups yet. I'm not worried about being up hurting the guy's development, just that he won't maintain this level and will inevitably be demoted. He wasn't a dominant Junior last year so it isn't like the WHL has nothing more for him. IMO it would just be screwing with their lineup for 9 games before he is sent back so I don't think he even gets that. I am enjoying the fact he is showing another gear after not having a monster playoff. I do expect this camp will be a springboard to a monster year in Kamloops now that four big minute forwards are out of his way.

Remember Ryan O’Reilly, Patrice Bergeron, Wyatt Johnson, Seth Jarvis, Dawson Mercer, Matt Stajan, Alex Steen

For every Boimistruck there’s a bunch of other 18/19 year olds who made the jump and did fine.

I really dont understand the waive Lafferty stuff. I think hes actually a really underrated asset. Good speed, physical and underrated skill. I think he could play a bunting/Hyman role on a skill line and do a decent job tbh. Dont give up on him yet give him more time he is a playoff style player.

Agreed

Overall pretty underwhelmed from the training camp so far from the vets. Love the promise guys like Minten and Knies are showing though.

So what’s the plan?

Bert. Matthews. Marner
Domi. Tavares. Nylander
Knies. X. Jarnkrok
Grego. Kampf. Reeves

Reilly. Brodie
McCabe klingberg
Gio. Lilly

Who wins the last spot? I’m guessing Robbie goes down. Then it comes down to Holmberg or lafferty?

If it’s Laff then we need to put Willy at 3c correct?

will be interesting to see how the roster shakes out today. Really curious to see if Minten makes it

"NHL is not a development league."

Wrong ...

Players are developed in the NHL all the time, and then they peak and decline.

Unless people want to believe marner was as good at 19 as he is today, he's developed in the NHL.

Being good enough to be a NHL player doesn't mean you are finished developing.

So many have said he has earned his spot, but yes he still has development to do, just like marner did.

Kyle Clifford makes it.

Ryan Reaves is waived because he is unlikely to get claimed with his contract; providing the Leafs with a bit more cap flexibility.

BOOM.

So Leaf fans how do you get under the cap ?

This is part of the manipulation strategy.

If they'd have made their moves there'd be no reason to check ...

Suspense ...

A few players are getting picked off waivers, but the majority are not.

If Leafs waive players better than other team's starters, isn't that a good thing?

I'm willing to give him more of a leash obviously, but having Reeves on the 12/13 man roster really does seem like a waste after what we saw in preseason.. granted it is preseason and I'm not going to judge a 38 year old too harshly but Reeves at league min vs. Reeves at 1.35 certainly feels like it's creating a lot more headaches than it needs to. Hoping he really has a greater impact physically than what I've seen.

Thought he played very well yesterday,
I think the Leafs and Clifford see him as a playing coach on the Marlies. Grooming for a future with the team.

I remember when making the team meant players were on the 4th line and as you developed you moved up the line up, not unlike a apprenticeship. If players weren’t defensively competent they were sent down to the minors to start the climb back to the NHL. It’s no wonder players of old were good at all aspects of the game…….

Exactly there’s no better way to develop and become ready for this league except for playing in it and learning as you go.

the OPTIMAL F lineup feels like it'd be this:

Bertuzzi - Matthews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
Knies - Minten - Jarnkrok
Gregor - Kampf - Lafferty

sadly, it won't be that

Lol, young players currently are more NHL ready because of all the resources available to them, 20 years ago 16/17/18/19 year old olds weren’t in summer training groups with NHL guys. That’s completely changed, Bedard has been training with NHL caliber players since 16 years old. Nathan MacKinnon trained with Crosby every summer since he was 15/16 years old for example. These kids are capable of playing against bigger men because they already do it.

The development of camps like Biosteel camp has completely bridged the gap. These 18/19 year olds aren’t deer in headlights. They are faster and stronger than ever before and can hang with the best of them.

Our prospect pool ranking hasn't gotten much respect the past while but I'd say this training camp has shown we have done pretty well at the draft table especially considering it's been mostly late firsts or second rounders.

With Knies ready to play, Minten looking arguably pro ready and guys like Cowan, Robertson we're pretty stacked on offense and maybe the play is to eventually liquidate some of it to add to our defense because that looks much more questionable moving forward.

Feels good that we have strong scouting that is regularly finding quality players in the draft.

This is really the ideal #2 line, you could make a case for Knies over Domi but no way should Nylander be on the 3rd line...massive waste.

Domi/Knies - Tavares - Nylander
