It’s funny seeing people say Minten is not ready only due to his age. Kid is bigger and has been more physical than the likes of Lafferty, Gregor, Kampf, and Holmberg.

He looks NHL ready, we have 9 games to use to our advantage… Might as well use it. I don’t care how old he is if he makes us a better team.

I want to see a full kids line.

Knies - Minten - Robertson.

I think that can be a good blend of size, grit, spunk, and scoring. Both Knies and Robertson can snipe it and Minten is good at cleaning up. Could be a really good cheap scoring line for us.

Maybe we can burn off his ELC and get him on a bargain deal before he truly breaks out in a few seasons.

These are my opening lines as well. Sit Gregor or Reaves, send down Robertson and waive Benoit or send down Kokkonen.

Basically says this
Holmberg made the team
Robertson will be sent down
Minten will be sent down
Lafferty waivers
Gregor made it and will sign an NHL deal

I don’t really have any issue with that lineup and I don’t disagree with sending Minten back to junior as was always most likely but if spots were being won on actual merit Minten stole Holmberg’s job this camp

That said as I’ve mentioned previously I do really like idea of Holmberg learning as much as possible from Kampf this year, with the hope being he shows enough that we can move Kampf next summer to optimize our bottom 6 cap

I hate Kilingberg paired with McCabe. To me the only thing that makes sense is

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren
Gio-Klingberg

or

Rielly-Liljegren
McCabe-Liljegren
Gio-Klingberg

Gio and Klingberg are both limited enough to the point where they should be deployed as a traditional 3rd pair, not given roughly equal time as we've done in recent seasons.

Main takeaways from camp. Not judging the pro players TOO much because well, it’s preseason:

- Easton Cowan looks like he is going to be a gamer.
- Matthew Knies looks faster. Wouldn’t be surprised if he slumps around the 40ish game mark, but what a steal of a second round pick.
- Minten looks great. Seems to be the type of player who is going to be a better pro than junior. I think he can play in the NHL this season, but don’t think it’s best for the Leafs. I also think it’s slightly better odds that playing junior and (fingers crossed) representing Canada is best for his development.
- Holmberg has not been talked about enough this camp. He should have been given a shot at 3C, and I personally think he is going to eventually force Keefes hand there. Although you never know with coach.
- Reaves looks good. There I said it. He’s not skilled, not the fastest, but can play a good cycle game and muck it up. Seems far better than Simmonds ever did in a Leafs jersey. Am I crazy?
- Jarnkrok looked good in his first preseason game. Brad traded for him once, he must see something.
- Gregor brings an element of speed that’s noticeable almost every shift. We’ve been too slow the last few years. I like him.
- Not crazy about how Bert has looked with m and m at all. Let’s see how they look in regular season. So far has been underwhelming.
- Because of all of the above. Sam Lafferty is my cap casualty if I had to make a tough decision. I can see the logic in sending Holmberg down to keep Lafferty for Asset management. But this is almost the opposite of the Minten situation. I think Holmberg can greatly benefit from NHL games and Lafferty seems like a bigger version of Kerfoot, to me anyways.
- Defense looks suspect at best. We’ve been a good defensive team over the last few years since Keefe has taken over. I think a lot of that is due to forward play. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if this is Brads #1 priority.

In conclusion, Leaf’s are the best. Habs and Sens stink. Go Leafs Go!
If they feel Minten is ready and Gregor

Maybe jamcrock and Lafferty are traded

To me Minten and knies play a mature pro game . They seem to always have the opposition hemmed in better than any line.
To me Nylander is a perfect fit for this line.
Minten doesn't play like a 19 yr old .

Holmberg is ready as well

Now treliving can concentrate on the D.

If Minten has unequivocally made the team in the eyes of Keefe and Co. then either Gregor is gone or he's signed and waived. Or hell even Lafferty is waived. Don't hate either option.

Why would we have to waive Lafferty.
I like him as a player , we just don't have room for him.

You said it, we don't have room for him if Minten and Gregor have both made it to the opening night lineup. The only other options would be trading Janrkrok which I don't think is an option given he's better than Gregor and Lafferty, or they waive Reaves which just isn't going to happen right now. Every other forward is locked in.

Why would we waive Lafferty to fit in Gregor outside of his handedness? Lafferty should be more valuable.

Sign Gregor and waive him to the Marlies to start if Minten is a real candidate.

I've seen Gregor do 0 useful things

I think both Gregor and Lafferty really only offer speed. Reaves only offers toughness. On a truly stacked team none of them would win a spot but they're okay enough as 4th liners relative to the league.

To me guys like Holmberg and Minten are a lot more interesting because they already have more well rounded games and do a lot of little smart things to contribute positively. I think the team would be better with them both on it but it makes things more complicated because they have easy places to demote them to without losing them.

I'm really torn on Minten

The kid is bloody good and I think there's more offense to be unlocked if he goes back to junior
He also makes our win now team better and deeper right now and I don't think that's even arguable

If you're good enough you're old enough but rushing kids is a great way to cap there ceiling

Remember Fred Boimistruck? Let's avoid having that experience again. Give the kid a chance to develop out of the spotlight.

Nylander - Matthews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Bertuzzi
Knies - Minten - Jarnkrok
Gregor - Kampf - Reeves/Lafferty

This seems like the most ideal lineup to me. Give Minten his 9 games and if he isn't cutting it replace him with Holmberg/ try Nylander at C again.

Rielly - Liljegren
Brodie - Klingberg
McCabe - Timmins
Giordano

I'm not convinced McCabe is a top-4 d-man.. I think you ride Liljegren and give him the chance to anchor Rielly, which frees Brodie up to play hero for Klingberg.. Assuming Brodie can still be as good as when he first signed here. Feels like Klingberg needs Brodie more than Rielly. Gio looks cooked. McCabe/Timmins is another defensive d + puck moving pair.

They should have room right? Send down Gambrell, Holmberg, Robertson, Jones, stick Timmins on LTIR, and they have 1.2 to play with, doing it quick in my head.

You gotta do something before Timmins is back from injury but there’s a month or so to work that out.

I really dont understand the waive Lafferty stuff. I think hes actually a really underrated asset. Good speed, physical and underrated skill. I think he could play a bunting/Hyman role on a skill line and do a decent job tbh. Dont give up on him yet give him more time he is a playoff style player.

I want to see Knies-Minten-Nylander & Domi-Tavares-Jarnkrok

From what I've seen, the youngsters would probably compliment Nylander fairly well. And Domi can probably create for Tavares while Jarnkork provides the intangibles & two-way presence for that line.

Lafferty Kampf Reeves: My pick for underrated line. Physical, big, imposing with good faceoff ability. When games get real, these guys will be a good forecheck and cycle line. I liked Reeve’s last game, he’s got underated good hockey sense. Lafferty has something Gregor doesn’t, “prick factor”. And he will drop them if needed. I like his physicality and speed and untapped offense.
