i would have rather signed Gustafson for the offensive input, and probably same level of lack of defence for much less than Klingberg, but I guess the hope is that he returns to a legitimate top 4 like he was on the Stars run to the cup.

Benoit is the same type of defender who we usually trade picks for at the deadline, i think he is the prototypical heavy 3rd pairing guy. If McCabe could slide over could be a nice shutdown 3rd pair.

Lily is the question mark, if he takes a step, i think we just need to use Brodies cap to upgrade to a bigger, heavier minute munching D
Funny you bring up Gustafsson vs Klingberg. When I heard we signed DK, I thought we got him at a steal. Something like $2M or less. When I saw what we gave him I wondered why we didn't just re-sign Gustafsson.

We have a new GM and I am prepared to reserve judgement on his signings. The other questionable one for me is Reaves. Though I suspect the Reaves value won't always be evident on the scoresheet and visible to the average fan from a distance. Reaves is not too much money and we can disappear that contract after one year with no real penality. So that one doesn't bother me too much. I like the Bertuzzi signing a lot I mostly like the Domi signing.

If Klingberg doesn't hurt on the cap, meaning we manipulate IR to keep everyone we want to keep then I like the Klingberg gamble. I believe he has much more upside than Gustafsson.

If Benoit is in the lineup next game he needs to make an impact.

Pick out the biggest guy on the Habs and scrap him. Give the coach a reason to put him on the team. Go beat the shit out of someone.

Intimidation matters.

The threat of Benoit knocking someone out is a good way of throwing opponents off their game. He can't do much else. His sweet first pass and awesome skating abilities aren't why he was brought in.

So he better get out there and start knocking heads.

Feed a few knuckle sandwiches to the opposition. Punch someone in their stupid ugly face. With a left and a right.

Have a good night.

I wonder if getting Sova into a game tonight is an indication that they are looking to give him an ELC.

He was just named captain of the Erie Otters and will be heading back there this year. Has decent numbers for a D-man and has good size. Not sure if still ELC-slide eligible.

Played for Canada at the u18's last year. Most expected him to be drafted in 5-7 rounds.

With the Leafs Cap situation he is the most likely player traded to become Cap compliant.

Leafs might not be playing him to ensure he is not injured and currently being shopped in trade.

With Leafs being +$2 mil over the start of season roster, that makes Calle Jarnkrok @ $2.1 mil a logical choice to be dealt.

Here is the List injury list as being reported.

ThG $2m figure has Robertson Martin jones Pontus holmberg and gambrel on it. They can get cap compliant and ice a 20 man 12-6-2 line up easily

Cap implications of the Timmins injury assuming he starts the season on LTIR are, this basically saves the Leafs from having to move Jarnkrok. Cap savings of Timmins being replaced by Giordano/Lagesson means that the decision is now between moving Jarnkrok and running 13/7 or moving Lafferty and running 12/7. Much easier decision IMO now that choosing to move Lafferty doesn't involve also having to move Timmins.

Domi-Nylander-McMann/Robertson

It looks like Timmins will be on LTIR and that opens up some cap space. I have a feeling we may see more LTIR maneuvering before we submit our opening roster.

However, IF we had to submit today, I would focus on asset management by waiving a couple of veterans that I am not sure would be selected by other teams -- Jarnkrok and Giordano.

Who has the space to take Jarnkrok for 2+ million for three more years? I like the player, but losing him might be useful this year and even moreso the next two. This is why I think he doesn't get picked.

Giordano could hint at retirement if selected, like Spezza did. I don't think we make him report to the Marlies. We just get him off our cap to start the year.

We will have injuries as the season goes on and both Gio and Calle would likely come back up when we can afford to do it.

Knies Matthews Bertuzzi
Robertson Tavares Marner
Domi Nylander Lafferty
Gregor Kampf Reaves

Rielly Brodie
McCabe Liljegren
Benoit Klingberg

Samsonov
Woll
Jones

It's a tight roster out of the gate and we have three goalies. But we keep Jones, Lafferty and Benoit and let Robertson start with the big club, he is earning that.

However, I suspect Jarnkrok or Klingberg gets an injury that requires LTIR and we get even more room and spots.

On a slightly different note, how nice is it to see that our youth could be contributors over the next two or three years? Knies, Woll, Robertson, Holmberg, Cowan, Minten, Timmins, Benoit, Niemela all look like useful pieces. Even if some of them are depth guys. Maybe we even sign Gregor for two years?

I garauntee Jarnkrok is claimed if he were waived. And even if he cleared barely 50% of his AAV would actually come off our cap. If he’s not on the team, you have to trade him.

Training camp seems too long. When is the first regular season game? I can’t figure out from mapleleafs.com

Last year they had text on their schedule differentiating between pre-season and regular season. This year they just have dates and games

I think he is waiver exempt; and given the cap situation my guess is he would not have made it anyway. To be seen ofcourse

This is the final week of pre season games. We have 3 more left on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Regular season starts on the 7th but our first game is on the 8th I believe.

Robertson needs to be a Marlie.

He missed an entire season and he does not need the pressure and criticism that would come from pushing him into NHL games.

He needs to be out of media glare of Toronto to get back into hockey, and not feel like he has to be a game breaker every shift.

As much as Robertson’s injuries have affected him, it seems like he always has to mature mentally as well. He looks like he’s trying too hard to do too much, and it makes him look scrambled and unpredictable in his shifts.

He needs to mature his game, get prime Marlie minutes, and continue learning to let the game come to him.

No question he has NHL skills. He’s just a 22 year old who has missed a lot of time and needs to work on things away from the glare that would put on him on the Leafs.

I am not a Jarnkrok hater or anything. I like what he brings too, but he is a bottom sixer making $2.1M per year for three years in a league where no one has any cap space. What teams have the need and the space? Not just the space to fit him in, but prioritize fitting him in over other players that might get waived or dumped? Picking him up on waivers means you can't get another guy on waivers or trade for a contract that has to be moved with a sweetener.

I can't think of any teams that this makes sense for. If someone picks him up then the Leafs get $2.1M in relief instead of ~$900K.

20g, 40pt bottom 6 forward who also kills penalties for barely $2 mil and 3 years remaining at that price? I’m willing to bet lots of teams would give up an asset for that. his cap hit isn’t going to be a detriment to moving him.

There are at least 10 teams who could fit him in with zero cap moves needed. And several more than could realistically make room

Garauntee he gets claimed if we put him on waivers
