What about trading the pick if we can't get in the top 3 or land a big RH winger with size/skill? Trade it for a quality young player who fills a need on our team?

I think it would obviously depend on the winger.

I can't think of a guy that would be available that I would move a top 6 pick for but definitely would consider it for a pick 7-12. Probably not for anyone over 25 though.

That's actually a really good comparison. Although, Matt Lombardi was a beast until Darrian Hatcher elbowed him in the head in game six of the second round 2004.

Beast for a 3rd line center maybe. He didn't produce all that much as a 2nd line center, virtually nothing as a 1st liner. Did his best as a 3rd line center where his speed could cover his lack of finish lol.

I can't see Mcleod as a top six right now. I just don't see the tools other than him being a speed demon.

Absolute, emphatic No. The top of this draft is

1) Strong (Dubois, Tkachuk, Nylander, Chychrun, Sergachev, Juolevi, McLeod, and I'm sure one other "hidden gem" the Flames have discovered)
2) Expansion draft protected
3) Cost Controlled

ah, I keep forgetting the bolded.

I would want it to be a 6-10 pick but I definitely would.

I was chatting with II & Hox the other day and suggested the same thing and came up with a couple trades (more of a three-way).

to Toronto:
- 1st round pick
- Ladislav Smid
to Calgary:
- James Van Reimsdyk
- Leo Komorov

to Brooklyn:
- James Van Reimsdyk
- Dennis Wideman
to Calgary:
- Travis Hamonic
- Jaroslav Halak

Don't mind the trade but I really think trading our first (unless a winger is coming back) is a bad idea. Getting Hamonic would be awesome and would make our defense one of the best in the league, but we have bigger issues than our defense core right now. I think a Halak for Wideman trade could work straight up for both sides, which would be beneficial for sure, and I would rather keep our first and draft a Finn, Dubois, Nylander, ect.

I don't think we do have bigger issues than our defense actually. People liek to **** all over our goaltending, but the defense in front of them has been absolutely terrible. I think a top 4 defensive specialist is absolutely our #1 need because we could have had Carey Price in net this year and he would have looked bad the way our guys hang the goaltending out to dry.

I think our defense was god awful at the beginning of the season, but it's been much better without Wideman and Smid in the lineup, and Jokipakka/Nakladal/Wotherspoon as there replacements. I do think our defense needs to improve though.

What if we made a massive trade where we got Strome from the islanders too?

CGY
Strome
Hamonic
Halak

NYI
CGY 1st
DAL 1st
Wideman
Kylington
Poirier

Edit: something might have to be fixed for cap though

Getting a legit top 4 d right now before the expansion draft is concerning because we would likely have to expose one. Unless we went the route of the other option but then we expose a forward...

Yeah I started thinking about that after I made that proposal. If we did get Hamonic (or another top 4 defensemen) we would risk losing a guy like Frolik, Backlund, or both to the expansion because we would be doing the 8 skaters option to protect all our top 4 defensemen. It might be best to tackle our defense next offseason after the expansion.

you can't sit on your hands and not improve the team out of fear of an expansion draft

Yes and no. You won't want to give up much in the way of prospects for a top 4 defenseman for one year of service. For that reason I'm for keeping things as is on the line this year, unless there is a FA that is available.

Would hate to give up someone like Andersson or Kylington for a dman that you could lose the next spring. Now a lesser prospect than yeah go for it but don't know what you'll get without quality going back?

Maybe if next year was our year to go all in and go for it but alas I don't think we're there yet. :(

I'm still expecting that in end, teams will be able to protect 4D, 8F and a goalie. The current setup punishes good teams far too much.

But still, the expansion draft plus the cap should put a damper on the notion the Flames can shortchange the rebuilding process by continuously trading picks and prospects for current roster players. The Flames are going to need the cheap ELC's of Kylington, Andersson, Kulak, etc, when they're paying Monahan, Gaudreau, Brodie, Hamilton, Giordano, Bennett, Frolik, Backlund, and a number one goalie as well as Matthews (oh it's happening) close to 60M a season.

And given what we know of Treliving, it's a pretty safe bet every move he'll make this off-season will have the expansion in mind.

Don't know if posted elsewhere, Barrie vs Mississauga is on SN360 right now. Our boys have looked good, 0-0 in the second, mostly all Barrie so far with a ton of shots.

Might as well know the rules before going out and moving top 5 picks. If we move the number 5 it would be for a young goalie and winger. I would consider something like:

5OA
Gillies

For
Mrazek
Mantha

Still I would just prefer to pick a forward that can handle Monahan and Gaudreaus skill off the rush ie Nylander or Dubois. None of this Ferland, Colbourne, Jones, Jooris top line fill in.

Dumb penalty by Mike McCloud slashing on Mangiapane. He looked pissed off and yelled at one of his own player for not passing him the puck and took it out on absolutely destroying Mangiapane's stick.

Scott Hat Trick! 4-1 another PP goal, what a series he's having! 10 goals in the post season already!

This guys playing like he wants a big league contract.

Barrie wins 5-1. Mangiapane with 2 points arguably the second best player, if not best on the ice offensively. Seems like a lot of play goes through him.
