Here's a weird one, purely speculation and just for fun. Say the Hockey Gods frown on Toronto for their tanking.

Lotto goes:
1) Winnipeg Jets
2) Buffalo Sabres
3) Columbus Blue Jackets

Toronto ends up with pick 4, Calgary with pick 7. Toronto decides, well, know what, we want both Nylander brothers; and they'd be willing to move down to 7. What would it cost Calgary to move up 3 spots? How many of those sweet, sweet, second round picks? Or would you even be interested?

I doubt they would be willing to move to 7th if it was Nylander that they wanted since there is a good chance he is gone by then. But assuming the deal is something along the lines of them taking Dubois and then trading him to us if Nylander still available I think it would cost way too much.

2nd round picks don't get it done. I think Bennett is likely too much to give but that it the type of return they are likely looking at to drop down 4 spots at the top of the draft.

The Leafs discussed moving back from 4th last year to 8th (Columbus) and asked for the 8th, the 34th, the 38th and the 58th picks in the draft. So the 8th overall and three 2nds. I'd imagine something similar to that would be the price. Maybe two seconds instead of three though. Three seems steep.

But I doubt they go too hard for the brother connection. There hasn't really been any rumored desire for that.

He was only suspended two games actually. He was suspended indefinitely while the decision was made, and then it was determined to be a two game suspension. So I suspect it affects him not at all

Well that's not so bad. He'd be my choice if we're not top 3. Tkachuk would be my second, Sergachev or Nylander I wouldn't be too disappointed either. Don't think the others are NHL ready.

Hoping Sean Day is still available at one of our seconds. Full grown man who skates very well, think he'd be able to learn a lot pretty quickly from Dougie, TJ, Gio if he were to make the team in a couple seasons. Nathan Bastian is another from Mississauga that would look really good in red.

I'd do 7th overall and a non-Flames 2nd; maybe a C/D prospect as well (someone like Culkin, Sieloff, Arnold, Kanzig, Morrison). I don't think the move up is worth much more than that.

Best winger for the Flames to Draft if not in the top.3

If the Flames don't pick in the top 3 what Winger would you want them to take if possible, Tkachuk, Dubois, Nylander, or Gauthier? Do you also think there is a chance the Flames would not go for a winger?

Think the Flames would throw Rasmus in there for a possible top 3 pick?

It's weird, because I think of Flames of old... but having a GM like Treliving is awesome. If he makes a trade; it always seems calculated and right away you see the benefit without having the fan related denial.

"Yeah... we moved our first, but we got a guy who scored 17 goals last season and chipped in 40 points... he's only 26 too, but also doesn't have a lot of wear on him. I think it'll work out. We'll give him top line duties, he'll put up points, I'm sure!"

My hope is for a top 3 pick. I'd be beyond awesome to add one of those studs to our cupboard. Flames would be all kinds of dangerous up front with one more big piece. I think that they'll add one offensive piece and Bennett will likely take some steps forward; but there's just that secondary scoring punch missing from about 80% of this season .

If we don't get the top 3; I'm all in for Dubois, Nylander or Tkachuk. We will likely get one, so I'm not super worried... Just hoping for Matthews, as that'd take Calgary into super-nova.

Spot on

After the top 3 I would go
4 Dubois
5 Juolevi
6 Nylander
7 Tkachuk

I really hope we aren't any lower than 7. I'm surprised to see so many are really low on Juolevi. It's only one tournament but I was amazed by him at the WJC

I try to take the WJC with a huge grain of salt. Lots of guys have fabulous tournaments and then absolutely nothing in the NHL. Hodgeson set/matched a record amount of points in the tournament and we all know how he turned out.

Well, what those two Finns did at that tourney was incredible; that's for sure. 17 year olds absolutely dominating a tournament is pretty slick.

Man, either one of them would look good alongside Johnny's off-wing.

Yeah, I try to as well but it's hard when that's the only time I see any of the guys play real games other than in the dub. And he was dominant I thought. I just try to read as much as I can and watch highlights. I was hoping Chychrun would make team Canada, I like what I read but I've never seen him play!

4.Dubois
5.Tkatchuk
6.Nylander
7.Trade down (or up)

My list is the same. I've always had Chychrun in that group, but I don't see him as a clear BPA so he's 7 on my board now, the other guys fill a need. I still think there will be a forward on the board at 7. All those teams are front heavy, especially in young players.
Only Columbus really needs a forward IMO.

As always I'd like to see more attempts to get steals by risk taking past the 1st. Pull more Mangiapanes and less Kanzigs/Smiths. Take a shot at Tyler Benson, Sean Day, Dmitri Sokolov, etc.

there is more to the game than flare. It's also hilarious that you say you want more "risks" and name Kkanzig and Smith, both if whom are picks that carried a great deal of "risk". Kanzig was considered a reach at the time but the Flames gambled that he could become more than a face puncher. Smith was in his draft plus one year and had just broken out in the OHL, no one really knew if it was signs of a late Bloomer or just a fluke season. Just because they have size, does not mean they aren't risky and you need a mix of players, you need both tough and skilled players and you need big players if you have small ones. Like it or not, toughness and grit is as vital to the NHL games as skill

Sorry I'm going to have to disagree. I hated the Kanzig and Smith picks and immediately thought truculence or some ******** like that. Not much ever convinced me that someone like Kanzig had much potential, always screamed plug. If they were average size players they would've never been picked by Calgary that early.

Kanjig and Smith are risky players because at the time they were drafted there were a lot of question marks on their skills.

Their upside is a plug has nothing to do with risk. They may not even be plug in the NHL. and that looks like the way it's going to be now. They were drafted to be bottom players that add toughness

Which was my original point of hating spending 2nd/3rd rounds picks on players that's upside is to be bottom players. Sorry I really hate this idea of truculence toughness nonsense, if that's the players best quality it means he sucks. These type of players are draftable later, is findable elsewhere, and expendable. If you failed with picking someone with upside that's much more acceptable in my mind. Which is why I approve of Kylington pick, even if he busts, and have never approved of Kanzig.

Yeah I get it, you're brainwashed into thinking big = goon. Smith has a unique set of tools, I didn't like the pick but you have to be intentionally obtuse to not see that. Kanzig is also more than a plug, but I've argued that to death already. Even if truculence was the goal in drafting these players teams still need a variety of skillsets to be competitive.

There's a reason why teams like LA & Anaheim are almost impossible to beat in a 7 game playoff series, and that's because their bottom 6 destroys their opposition. Fact is, our team is too small. We need to add guys like Colborne, Janko, Smith, Kanzig Ferland, and Bruce, with hopes that a couple of these guys pan out. They were great picks considering organizational needs alone.

You know who's better than them? Chicago, and they are on average one of the smaller teams in the league. If you want to draft toughness fine, just don't freakin do it in the 2nd round. Take a Ferland with that 5th if you must, but not with a 2nd.

It's not their best qualities though.

Hunter Smith is a ginormous man that is truculent, yes. But he is excellent defensively and was a key part of the Generals shutdown line on their run to a Memorial Cup Championship, he also score 20+ goals and had just shy of 50 points. Maybe he only has the upside of a 3rd liner, but that's all I expect from 2nd round picks anyways. But if he can turn into a 10 goal/20 point 3rd liner than can lay people out and beat their faces in as well, that is a good pick for late in the 2nd round.

With Kanzig, yes he is also a monster; yes he can also play mean but his is also excellent at playing angles and using his stick to break up plays. Yes, Kanzig is actually a good defensive defenseman :amazed:, his biggest question mark is his offensive ability and puck skills. If he can keep plays simple in the defensive zone and get his (big) shot off quickly, he will be just fine. I admittedly have not watched him play this year but I am encouraged by him scoring 13 goals this year as it means he is likely shooting more and getting that big shot off more quickly.

They may not turn into NHL players, but players taken in those parts of the draft rarely do. I think you really need to give more credit where it's do rather than buy into the group think that big = goon.

Fans seems to gravitate to the "flashy" guys more because they don't get fired when those guys don't turn out and you have holes on your roster.

Also, Gaudreau and Mangiapane (who has done jack squat at the NHL level) stand out for Flames fans but it seems to ignore the countless simliar guys that flame out as much if not much more than the so called "tough guy" pick.

Even the vaunted Blackhawks have gone with tough, role player guys like McNeil, Hartman early on when they could have gone the flashy talented route with Grimaldi, De La Rose etc. instead.
