What a good night...heading back the right direction

Yup. Literally everyone that I wanted to win (Buffalo, Montreal, Columbus, Winnipeg, Arizona (currently)) won. It would've been nice if Vancouver and Winnipeg went to OT but I just can't see Vancouver passing us at all, whereas Winnipeg has the tie breaker if we're tied in points. Edmonton and Arizona going to OT would be nice too but like Vancouver, I just can't see Edmonton passing us either.

This is an interesting visual of odds.

For sure, it's different when I was thinking about it in my head; this makes it a lot more clear.
Even at 6th, Calgary would have a +23% at top 3 picks; but honestly; 4th or worst is where you want to be come draft time.

Give yourself a 30% chance or better to go top 3; and at least give yourself majority odds at the top 5.

Well this cheering to lose mentality is going to drive me away from the site until pre season at this rate

If that's in reference to my comment about where you'd like to be picking; it's not that I'm cheering to lose, it's just that it would be best to pick at four or worse . I don't think any of us cheer for the team to lose; I think we cheer for the team, but when the loss comes it points to the silver lining.

Mostly I think folks around here play it up because it drives other posters crazy

Poster 1: "Here's hoping for a loss! TANK COMMANDER!!!"
Poster 2: "BAKHN AJFHA FJH AFJH ADFHAD:rant::rant::rant::rant::rant::rant:"

I'd rather the team play hard all year for a toilet finish, but not get first crack at the high-end talent because to win the cup you must first have winning culture, and you don't get a winning culture by drafting potential stars, you get it by not making the playoffs.

People tend to put too much weight on this.

Last year was about the biggest Moral Victory this team could of had. Cinderella story, 2nd round playoff appearance.... If that wasn't enough to invigorate this team for this year; I don't know what was.

It's the same thing as the whole "we need veterans like Stajan in this lineup so we don't become the Oilers" meanwhile, Stajan has a total 14 games playoff experience under his belt, 3 more than Johnny or Monny

Late season victories are the currency that buys a winning culture. A top-3 draft pick is about as valuable as country club mop water.

Absolutely. Just look at the Columbus Blue Jackets, whose incredible late season surge last year is now propelling them to their first Stanley Cup.

Or the Senators, whose late season record play last year is now carrying over into a dominant season that will see them also win their first Stanley Cup.

Oh wait.

A new season is a new season. Lots of players can do well when there's no pressure or expectations. Even Conroy acknowledged that in a recent interview.

Precisely. If making it to the second round of the playoffs didn't translate into a better start, a meaningless late season surge when there's no pressure or expectations won't suddenly mean the team's a playoff contender. A top pick that can play next season will do a lot more than a mid first round talent that's a few years away from making any kind of contribution.

This thread is to discuss the Flames draft/draft position. Not to discuss the merits of cheering for the team to win/lose and if it makes anyone a better 'fan' than anyone else.

Keep it on topic, or you will be removed from the discussion.

I have to say, first, congratulations.

Secondly, and most importantly: it's fantastic that your avatar is Thor.

Winner
Congrats II and thanks for the Avatars once again.

And to stay on topic. Looks like we have played our way out of Dubois. Oh well I still really like Tkachuk and I would be pretty happy with Nylander.

Criticizing Backlund is now a bannable offence. Just as it should be.

On topic; uh, draft lottery is April 30th.

Draft lottery? I thought this thread was about whether it's acceptable to cheer for your favourite team to lose.

More seriously, my only hope is that the Flames don't draft Gauthier. I think it's tough for them to go wrong with anyone else in the top 10.

New users, please take note of the bolded.

On topic,

Winnipeg and Edmonton play tomorrow so those are games to watch. The former would be tied with us in points.

The later would be one point behind us.

This assuming we lose on Thursday.
