Does anyone else see a lot of similarities to Monahan when they watch Matthews?

Ridiculously unflashy, sort of invisible if you're not paying attention, but lethal in dangerous areas? Yeah I see it.

The only times I've seen him has been against juniors though, and he's just looked out of place against them. Too big, too strong, too smart, too fast.

Matthews is as an 18 year old what we're hoping Monahan becomes in a perfect world as a 25 year old.

So you think Matthews is better than a 60 point guy in the NHL this year? I prefer Eichel personally and I don't think Eichel is as good as Monahan yet.
Obviously Matthews is better at the same age, but you are fooling yourself if you think he's already better than Monahan.
I just think they have a lot of similarities. Big, heavy wrist shot with outstanding finishing abilities, Mediocre defensively, not elite skaters. Matthews is a better Monahan IMO.
I put Matthews in the Eichel Mackinnon draft age ability.

I think Eichel > Matthews > Monahan, right now in terms of on-ice impact. I do think Monahan might be a bit more polished but don't confuse polish with capability as it only takes a short time in the NHL to polish up details.

Matthews is steady defensively and he's a pretty splendid skater even if he's not quite McDavid/Eichel/MacKinnon tier he's easily Kopitar/Toews tier as a skater. You're right about the big heavy wrist shot but Matthews' skating is a strength that will take him places we can only hope Monahan gets to.

Max Jones having another great game. He impresses everytime I watch him.
I'm sure he's gone by 15, I was hoping we could find a way to get him with another pick but I highly doubt that now.

He will likely be there at 12 where the Flames are headed with their pick in the draft.

imo

1. Matthews
2. Laine
3. Pulju
4. Dubois
5. Chychrun

Very little interest in Tkachuk

Wouldn't mind giving a shot at Sokolov with a 2nd/3rd.

I wouldn't be too concerned about closing out the season with a few W's. Oilers won McDavid from 4th, and with three shots at the lottery, I still think we find a way to snag one of the top three positions. :dunno:

Matthews: (Cerebral, pace controlling #1 C)
Puljujarvi: (Absolutely love this kid. Hustle, heart, grit, explosive speed, great shot, big frame, infectious smile)
Laine: (Elite sniper)
Chychrun: (Not as down on him as others. Would round out or D nicely... Giordano-Hamilton / Chychrun-Brodie :amazed: )
Dubois: (Versatile big bodied, slick skating, smart C. Remains me of Drai 3hrs north of us)
Tkachuk: (Another player I'm not as down on as others. Would fit like a glove in our top 6. Could be another Corey Perry if all goes well)
Juolevi: (Reminds me of Doughty, less of an ass though)
Sergachev: (Kevin Shattenkirk 2.0, very raw prospect. Needs fine tuning in his own zone)
Nylander: (Offensive dynamo, with an underrated release. Sort of reminds me of Skinner)

Big 9, in the order I would like to see us take them

Oilers won McDavid from 3rd. From a mathematical perspective, though, basing your outlook on previous lottery results is foolish, though. Dice have no memory and all that.

Realistically, though, if it's a matter of dropping from fourth to fifth, it was last year a difference of 2.6%. So it only makes a difference one time out of thirty-something.

The positive is that the Flames are probably better off with a lower pick and have a good player slide to them (i.e Monahan and Bennett)

They are really not very good at drafting ;)
