Insane we aren't even in the bottom 2

We can thank a few weeks of Vezina-caliber goaltending for this anomaly. We'll be bottom 2 when it's all said and done. Carolina will get a hot streak going after their abysmal December. It's the ebb and flow of hockey.

Despite being the worst offensive team in the modern NHL era last season, we're on pace to score even fewer goals this season. We have 71 goals in 40 games, which is about a 146-goal pace over 82 games. We scored 150 last year. We're also well on our way to giving up more goals than last season. We surrendered 248 last year. Meanwhile, we're on pace to give up approximately 276 this season.

If these projections hold, we should have a (non-shootout goal) goal differential of around -130. We bad. Probably even worse than last season.

Will fix everything
I can't wait to watch the board hyperventilate in February when we win a few games

at this point, I'm pretty sure a Buffalo win and edmonton loss within 2 days of each other will result in full blown panic attack of a few posters here.

10 point lead turned into 4 pretty quickly. Somewhere Tim Murray is smiling.

Six days to be exact.

This shouldn't really be surprising at all. Sabres have been getting more points than their play should produce, Oilers have been getting fewer points than their play should produce, some of us have been saying for the past 3-4 weeks how this was likely to correct itself sooner rather than later. People really shouldn't be getting so surprised when the standings start catching up with what the rest of the stats have been saying all season.

Some fun facts -

Oilers record before firing Eakins - 7-19-5 (19/61 or 31% of possible points)
Oilers record since firing Eakins - 2-3-4 (8/18 pts or 44%)
Oilers since since firing Eakins and hiring Nelson - 2-0-2 (6/8 pts or 75%)

Small sample size, sure, but reading the Oilers board there's a lot of "fresh of breath air" comments from fans & players alike. The coach change and swapping out some players seems like a very welcome small reset.

Arcobello as the 2C was such a joke. And Leon was just overmatched. Sending him back to junior was the way to go. He was also getting 75%+ O-zone starts, so now those minutes can be redistributed to more competent offensive players, including their Big Three line. Having those two guys as your 2C/3C was a recipe for underachieving.

Pouliot coming back also helped solidify their middle lines. If they still had Perron, I'd be 0% concerned about their ability to pass us.

Thats whats been going on? I could have sworn it has a lot of raging and carrying on about the Sabres defying reality and math. Don't recall if you were one of them but thats what the bulk of the posts were. And no one is surprised they are struggling and playing as poorly as they are right now. The team finally found a structure that worked for them anchored by this top 6. Moulson/Girgs/Ennis and Flynn/Mitchell/Gionta. The defense emerged with a good top 4. Myers anchored the top pair playing huge minutes. Zads emerged and paired with Risto made an effective 2nd pairing. Obvious the other benefit was others like Mess and Benoit played less or not at all.

That structure has been blown apart but injuries and illness. Thats why we are struggling and playing horribly right now and why few should be surprised by it.

For comparions sake.

During that 13gm run where we went 10-3-0, with that structure in place. We scored 33 goals (2.54 goals for/game) and gave up 29 goals (2.33 goals against/game).

Starting with Mitchell leaving the lineup for the last 9gms, Myers last 7, Gionta/Foligno last 6.

In the last 9gms we've scored 15 goals (1.67 goals for/game) and gave up 41 goals (4.56 goals against/game).

When considered against the clear objective to finish in 30th to obtain one of McEichel, I bet TM would consider having 3rd pick to be some level of failure.

With the above numbers showing team incompetence, how could Murray determine it was a failure? What could he have done to make this team worse? It's at a point were he should start blackmailing opposing teams before Oil games? Or just hope that they become moderately functional, because the team he put out there is as tankworthy as possible, while having a modicum of future pieces in place.

Yep. At the end of the day Murray wanted a team with a chance at 30th. We have that.

I didn't say he would consider himself a failure. I said the outcome could be reasonably considered a failure. Can you imagine a -125 goal differential--which is the pace we're on--and NOT finishing 30th?!

It's a combination of injuries and regression to the mean--but you can guess which I think is the primary factor. Having back Mitchell, Gionta, and Myers wouldn't have mattered in a lot of these recent games where we're getting our ***** kicked. Enroth stopped saving pucks at a .945 clip, the team stopped shooting at 12%, and here we are.

That you don't understand those things go hand in hand is incredible. Maybe its the coach in me but its seemed pretty obvious why they went on that little run. And why they are now struggling.
