Who said there isn't a possibility?
Sure..but the whole rigged lottery in all the sports is a little absurd considering the lotteries are conducted by an independent 3rd party

Did I misinterpret your post?

absurd
1.
wildly unreasonable, illogical, or inappropriate.

synonyms: preposterous, ridiculous, ludicrous, farcical, laughable, risible

Context. It's absurd to make the allegation when there is zero evidence to support the claim. It doesn't mean it isn't possible to rig the lottery. :shakehead

but you can also say is it is silly to assume that conspiracys don't exist because they are silly. If you don't think the NHL flavors teams then you don't watch very closely. Wouldn't that be a conspiracy?

I read posts about how the refs favor the leafs when the sabres play them...well that is also a conspiracy.
I didn't say they don't exist. I said it's silly to believe one is true just because you imagine it could be. But you need to present real evidence for a rational person to believe it -- for example, the NBA ref betting scandal.

The nba is the only lotto that I can think of where people typically think because of outcomes that it might have been rigged, which considering things like the ref scandal and Stern denying the lakers trade a couple years ago for chris paul make it at least tasty as far as conspiracy goes.

I don't think the NHL had a lot to get out of giving edm all of their 1st overalls, but they certainly have made conspiracy like moves in the past, tho I generally lay that at the feet of incompetence more than anything else.

What is the conspiracy with the Chris Paul deal? ... Usually the conspiracy is the League favoring the Lakers... Being a Lakers fan I've dealt with it my entire life.

It wasn't a conspiracy so much as a comletely unusual move, it was the leagues commissioner nixing a trade between two teams for no other reason than he said so, I believe his official line was that it was not a good basketball trade. Meanwhile every commentator on the nba thought it was a travesty, and the eventual trade that was completed with the Clips was not a significant improvement by any stretch. Not to mention the nba basically never stops a trade from going through unless there is a technical issue. So basically a situation that seemed like the Commish went way over his authority and was quite out of the ordinary. I think the general idea was that by putting Paul in a Clips uni, it would boost another big market franchise vs letting the Lakers get rich again. That's the most I remember, I'm not a big nba guy. The motive was outside of my range, but the actions were definitely unusual and arbitrary.

The league supplied a perfectly reasonable explanation for why it nixed the Paul to Lakers trade. The league was in direct ownership and control of the Hornets at the time and had every right to deny a trade they felt wasn't in the Hornets' best interests. The idea that the league is biased against the Lakers is ridiculous.

I know I didn't like it. But the league was running the Hornets at the time ..it was surely out of the norm but .. I don't know .. I guess you could call it a bit sketchy.

Based on what? When was the last time the lottery results could ever have been construed as favorable to the league's bottom line?

The NHL lottery is conducted by an arbitration firm.
Do you have some more info on it? Like, what arbitration firm specifically? I couldn't really find any in-depth stuff about it on google.

Also, just to clear it up, I'm not saying the lottery is rigged, I'm saying I would probably seriously consider rigging it, if I was the NHL Commissioner and a money-driven psychopath. :)

 I'm sure they've all thought about it and how it could benefit the league ... but it comes down to risk/reward. Is the reward worth the risk of being caught ...because if you're caught you're done and the league takes a serious hit.

Sorry if it's been said already but tyler Johnson and Hedman aren't playing against the oilers tonight!

Oil could win tonight!

The hockey gods are saying there's a chance.

I'm having trouble finding it myself. I understand if that raises doubts but I remember with 100% certainty reading about it last year, with the firm specified in the articles as I then Googled the firm to read more about it. I'll try some more searches.

Now, I would never say that the lottery can't be rigged because of a third party verifying the process but it certainly makes it harder. These companies entire business is based on their reputation in these matters. Throw on top of that Gary Bettman has to arbitrarily believe the league is better off with Team X winning (or in your case wants to take a bribe), even though his job is to represent the interest of 30 teams, 29 of which he has to hide his activity from. Then there's the actual process of mechanically rigging the lottery balls which are drawn in a fairly abstract way that'd make manufacturing desired results complicated. Certainly not impossible but very improbable. I have enough trouble excepting the motives behind theories except in some pretty specific cases where I would at least say the motive makes some sense on the surface.

That said, I'm down to crowdsource a bribe and see if it works.

I actually don't think the minutiae would be that hard. For example the process of rigging the mechanics would most easily be done by bribing the arbitration firm, which for enough money or future business or whatever could certainly be done. People at this level, high end lawyers, will lie their balls off for huge profits, and is totally human. I think even working outside of the other teams including the one you are favoring would be easy. Make it a closed circuit between you, the commish, and the firm.

The problem is motive for me. What benefit does Bettman really get out of taking this risk to say send the pick to Arizona or Philly? If MacDavid goes to Philly a popular team continues to be popular, but only marginally more so. If he goes to Arizona, I mean I don't think that makes them hugely popular, they are still going to be one of the least valued teams in the league. It just seems like a huge risk for very little return for a guy like Bettman, particularly with the leagues current finances.

Especially if it was found out, he'd be crucified. Risk/Reward and the risk is substantially higher than the reward in this case.

The only thing I could see making it worth his while is if he was getting crazy money from the lucky team, or someone had serious dirt on him and he was getting leveraged into doing it. Seems pretty unlikely, especially the bribing cuz he makes stupid already, and has for two decades.
