Earl Jessiman was a head coach in the American Hockey League (Fredericton Express) in the early to mid 1980's when Vancouver and the Quebec Nordiques shared an AHL team. I have no idea if he and Hugh Jessiman are related.

Was thinking that as well. Not too fond of that myself and think there are other ways to get that point across.

There is definitely allure with grabbing a skilled Russian who can bang. Though, it's funny how they make a big deal about the fact that he's Russian and plays 'NA' yet they cap him and don't expect his offense to be a big part moving forward.

Whether it's Bennett, Ritchie, or him, Russian or not, Barbashev is at the top of the class when it comes to merging skill and rough and tumble matchups.

i have, on occasion, banged that same drum.

its especially bad within canadian major junior and the canadian press drives that whole thing.

it is what it is.
 
Is Fort Wayne close to Notre Dame? Maybe he wants to finish the semester (and graduate)?
 
We have our first round pick NEXT year (2015), right?

We gave up this year's (2014) for St. Louis?

Edit: n/m, it was the 2015 we gave up. And if we make the ECF this year, we give up a first this year too.

Ugh. Two first round picks given up if we get past Pittsburgh.
 
The Rangers will end up with the 19th or 20th pick in the draft based on the league standings. Take away Jersey's pick. Its 18th or 19th. If the Rangers win 2 playoff rounds,that pick becomes #27-#30 and it belongs to Tampa. #18 or #19.

Turned 18 today. Size and skill up the middle, he's not as good as Ryan Johansen in his draft year, but he's not too far away.

He's one of the best passers in the draft. He's flashier than Reinhart, and a little less workman-like and direct, but I always kept noting how many passes he'd convert on. He's got great vision and feel for his teammates.

Going to be a good pickup for a team in the 25-45 range.
 
The final 4 teams would be ranked #26-#29 in this draft. The NHL gave the Devils new ownership group a break and gave them a first round pick #30.

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced today that it has decided to modify the disciplinary sanctions originally imposed on the New Jersey Devils' franchise for its conduct in connection with the signing of former NHL Player Ilya Kovalchuk in July 2010, which conduct was determined by an Impartial Arbitrator to have constituted a circumvention of the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (the "CBA") then in effect.

The sanctions originally imposed on the Club included a significant fine, the forfeiture of the Club's third-round draft selection in 2011 (which was forfeited) and the forfeiture of a first-round draft selection which has been deferred by the Club until this year in accordance with the terms of the original penalty. As a result, as it relates to the portion of the discipline relating to the first-round draft pick, the Devils stand to forfeit it entirely in the upcoming 2014 NHL Draft. The Devils recently applied to the League for reconsideration and relief from a portion of the original penalty, citing primarily changes in circumstances which, in the Club's view, changed the appropriateness of the sanctions initially imposed. After due and thorough consideration, the League has decided that a modification of the original circumvention penalty associated with the Kovalchuk contract is warranted and, accordingly, has amended the sanctions as follows:

The New Jersey Devils will now be entitled to the 30th selection overall in the 2014 NHL Draft (the last pick in the first round), regardless of the Devils' final standing following the 2013/14 season.

The Club will not be permitted to trade or transfer its right to the 30th overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft.

The Club's fine has been partially reduced.

The League intends to have no further comment on this matter.

Jersey's pick would have been around 12th. They get the 30th pick. The Devils new owners took on the bad debt so the NHL did them a favor.
 
The Rangers are stuck in the 15-20 first round draft pick range. Cherepanov was 17. DZ was 20. Kreider was 19. Miller was 15. The pick traded to Columbus was 19. Good enough to make the playoffs but not one of the elite teams. Even when the Rangers miss,they have the 10th pick.
 
I don't know if anyone is watching this Union/U of Minnesota game, but it's absolutely intense right now!!! Definitely tune in if you can!!
 
I'm partial to Novak because he's a Hill School kid, but you always have to be careful in taking players out of a very structured, definitive system in the NCAA and expecting it to translate perfectly. You have to look for a universal skill set that allows the player to change their game. Not a lot of Union players strike me as NHL talent, Carr is certainly one of them though.

That's why this championship is so special, because it shows you can win with high level ECHL, mid level AHL players, so long as you run a good system.

Spot on. Some guys are very systems oriented. Cornell has had a long history of success in the ECAC by playing a stifling defense. Some very bright minds on the ice that play mistake free defense. Made a lot of goaltenders look great. Leneveau in particular.

High end talent or effective role players always stick out in cawlidge hockey, but this Union team was a sum of the part hockey team that won because of its system. Hell of a coaching job, but if Thatcher Demko could have made some timely saves, it would have been a BC victory, cause there are maybe 8 guys on BC that are more legitimate pro prospects on BC as opposed to 1 on Union.
