Nikita Scherbak. Very interesting player. Great wheels and can score from the outside, or by rushing the net from the wing, but really excels in dishing the puck. He's really done a bang-up job of adapting to the North American game, and he definitely plays with a chip on his shoulder. I caught one game earlier in the year and he actually laid a big hit on the opposing team's goalie behind the net. He's played most of his time on the wing, but I think he could actually play center if given the opportunity.

He was also one of the best players on the ice during the top prospect's game. He has the usual questions about his defensive game and play away from the puck, but those areas seem to get better and better each game.

I'd absolutely be on board with him as our pick, but I think he'd represent a shift in 1st round drafting philosophy. A fault of mine is not hitching my wagon to a kid I really like simply on because I can't see the Rangers drafting him. I did that with John Carlson in '08 and it stung too bad.

we wont draft him. i do like him and he would certainly help us offensively. hes a slick looking lefty shot who plays the off wing. has all the tools.

hes no russian slouch either. hes physical and not afraid to get dirty. i would say hes definitely got an edge. hes up to 6'2 180. good projectible frame with room to fill out.

i still believe our pick will be one of milano or tuch. which ever one falls below 15, i see us making a move up to snag that guy.

our love affair with usndp kids seems real. mcd, steps and kreider are all cornerstone guys and brady skjei looks like a real good prospect. i see us continuing to tap that talent.

but i would make a serious move for scherbak. hes gonna be a player.

I like him alot as well. I ranked him 15th in March and he still will rise.

Typical loose Russian personality - a huge potential if a team can improve his off ice habits such as diet and training (and I never bring up that with 17yr olds who are bound to anyway).

Right now, he's just a raw player who has game. He's hulking, and very distinguished on the ice. I love his hunched, hawking style.

He's got burst, edge, and can handle the puck real well.

He has been producing since the beginning of the season. No one knew about him, and scouts looked for excuses to keep him from rising on lists.

He's a homerun, with star potential.

Yeah he hasn't let up playing on such a bad team, he's 44 points ahead of the #2 scorer on Saskatoon.

Kid looks legit - natural talent, size, skating, determination, I certainly wouldn't mind adding him to the prospect pool.

Two scouts did 2014 mocks:

I like the Eastern Scouts pick.

What would be a comparable for Scherbak style wise? He sounds a bit like Vlad Tarasenko without the good three zone game.

Larkin. Tuch. Kempe. Size. Strength. You can get players with size in the first round. The Rangers have success with the American boys. Some people like Kempe more than others. Button has him 7th in his latest rankings. 6-1 187 LW. Born September 13. Three days later and he is not eligible for this draft. One of those 3. Larkin will go to Michigan. Tuch to BC. Kempe plays for Modo. The Rangers like the Swedes. Stick with what you know. Larkin is 6-1 190. Tuch is 6-4 213. Righty shot.

"Stick with what you know" has given us a prospect pool bare of real impact players. It's time to go another direction.

Tuch won't be available when the Rangers pick.

Kempe won't be either.

I like Larkin, but I'd rather go for someone more risky like Honka or Scherbak.

No tarasenko is a different player. Scherbak is more dancer where Tarasenko is more ovechkin light to me.

Scherbak has this hunched over skating style but by no means is that a negative. He's explosive and dangerous. His skating to me seems a little different but he's a very edgy skater who can change direction instantly and is faster with the puck.

Style wise he's unique. One thing about him is he's a load to handle. He will hit you and he will be physical.

This is a kid I have liked alot since he caught fire this season. His offensive game has really blossomed.

Maybe a little of Kovalev in him?

Everyone knows of my concern for Ekblad. Even though both have a hunched style, Scherbak is way more explosive and a better skater than Ekblad.

It's a non-issue.

Agreed about Scherbak. I think there's legitimate first-line potential if he's groomed properly. He and Buchnevich could potentially be a very dynamic presence on the wing in 4 or 5 years that would be incredibly exciting to watch.

I'm not sure I see Milano as a guy we'd take. There's no safety net there, and that's what the Rangers target in the first for the most part. Guys who have upside, but ultimately look like safe bets to be NHL players. They gamble in the 2nd round and beyond. Tuch makes sense. Larkin would make sense because he's a 3-zone player already.

I'm hopeful for Skjei, but right now he strikes me as a guy who makes up for a lot of mistakes by being bigger and faster that the guys around him. He needs time.

I'd say style-wise he compares pretty favorably with Jake Voracek. Though he's not as proficient defensively as Voracek was at the same age. That can be taught though.

David Pastrnak is our best possible pick
He got concussed on a big hit - but will be OK according to "sources" I got
Watch here -
This will make him drop right into our laps
Should (could) therefore be around when we choose
Believe me - he is a very talented player
Top 6 potential
Czech factor notwithstanding (citing previous NYR draft history)

Maybe we lose our first rounder though???

Time will tell

Absolutely agree with you. I love this player. His speed, deking, shot. He always finds open ice and is a very creative player. I think that there might be a team that likes him so much that he can be picked in the top ten. Just like Hampus Lindholm moved up to sixth in the 2012 draft.

David is the type of player that we need. A dynamic winger that can make plays and score on his own. Hopefully he will comeback 100% from his injury. That was a nasty one.

The Rangers aren't getting an impact player in the mid teens(15 on) to late teens which is where they will be picking assuming they make the playoffs and don't win two playoff rounds. Stick with what you know. The Rangers have had good success with the American kids. They targeted McDonagh in the Gomez trade. They liked him in his draft year. Stepan and Kreider. Miller will be a player. So will Skjei. One bad hockey player after another.

That injury scares me, gotta hope he comes back and plays fearless like he did before. Open space is crucial to this guys game.

Yeah a #15 player in a draft has no shot at being an impact player :propeller

And I agree, should be going American/Swede for years since our core is exactly that and has been for awhile. Should have had that mentality when passing on Carlson for Del Z. Or in 2010 whena few good American players were on the board.

Is Carlson an impact player? He's a very good player. Sometimes teams do get lucky with a pick in the mid to late teens/early twenties becoming a top player. The other guy was saying the Rangers lack top end talent because they keep drafting Yanks. Its hard to get a top player who is an impact player outside of the top picks in the draft and the Rangers are never bad enough. Sometimes teams do get lucky. McDonagh(12th) and Shattenkirk(14th)in 2007 have become impact players. Both of them are better than Carlson.

Depends on what your definition of "impact player" is, I guess. I think it's safe to say Carlson would have a whole lot more impact on this team than any of our current 4/5/6 defenders. If you find the right player, they can be an impact player.

I see no reason to change what has been working with the US youth program, often NCAA bound players.

If you want to go high risk high reward, go signings or guys like Buchnevich later on.

The lack of NYR firsts of late means they need to have low risk picks with the first round picks that they do have.

In regards to what the scouts did with their mocks, I like the Rangers taking Honka, but not so much on Perlini. Not knocking the guy because he is good, but I'm just not that entirely convinced on how he'll develop.

It seems that signs are pointing for Barbashev to drop a bit and my sources are the mock drafts on the mock draft page and this link that the NHL scouts did (http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=710956) so it's basically pure speculation. But if this is the case, do we make a play for him? Very solid player who does play the North American game. I don't think there's a doubt in my mind that he bolts to Russia and loves to be physical. He says that here in this interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vot7FQ8RpJE). If he slips, I would seriously want the Rangers to think about who they can get out of a player like that. A line of Barbashev and Buchnevich in the future maybe?

I'd say that we should really look toward drafting one of (or more of :naughty:) Tuch, Milano, Larkin, Honka, Barbashev, Scherbak, Kempe, Goldobin, Pastrnak, Ehlers (top 10 for sure), McCann, or Ritchie in the 1st. Make this one count boys.

I know the Rangers watched Scherbak pretty close this season. Interviews and everything.
