Dwight King scored 18 goals this year. Dustin Penner scored 18 goals in his entire three years as a King. Don't miss him one bit.

The only way he gets scratched is if he plays so well he helps them out of the basement.

Erhoff, wtf?

I have no idea what BUF is doing at this point... A compliance buyout of Ehroff makes no sense at all and doesn't help them make the floor. A regular buyout makes more sense unless the hope is to collect every bad contract in the league and buy them out or hide them in the AHL to get them to the floor. What UFA is going to sign with them unless they throw insane money at them?

I will say Ehroff would look nice in LA, hope DL at least inquires about him. Would be a great Mitchell replacement and makes RR expendable.

King 8 days of the week, for the reason Rec said above. King is such a better fit in the system than Penner ever was.

It makes plenty sense when you consider the potential salary cap penalties that the Ehrhoff contract carries ... if they are looking to be competitive a few years from now they can't have a 5 or 10 million dollar re-capture penalty to their salary cap around the time when their recent top draft picks come up for new contracts. A regular buy out would cost them a cap-hit for a looooooong time including very large cap hits in the "cheap years", wouldn't it ? That's giving yourself a handicap for the next decade when they will seek to be a cap team. I think that's more important than just reaching the cap floor in the short term.

I think it's solid long-term thinking, for cap management. It was now or never.

Didn't think of that. Yeah the cap hit penalty for the buyout would be something like 12-14 years right? Makes sense from that standpoint.

Buffalo didn't want to possibly face the recapture penalties on Ehrhoff.

The recapture penalties are damn harsh. Teams like Detroit (Z, Franzen, Datsyuk), Chicago (Hossa), Canucks (Luongo) have some ticking time bombs on their roster ... or in Vancouver's case Florida's roster ...

Our Kings have Quick, Carter and Richards with problematic contracts. Though not as bad as those others. They end at ages 34-36. The guys mentioned above is in the range of 38-42.

this off season seems so anticlimactic...a little boring..but we are champs so really can't complain

Yeah that was main reason...but his max recaputure penalty would be $3,0M, not 5 or 10M, and that would be only if he retires in 2017 or later(before that it is 1,4-2M). They could have traded him this summer and get sone future assets, late 1st or early 2nd in next year draft alone would be worth a risk of 3,0M against cap in sone distant future.
Does not look like smartes move, imo, but I'm no GM...

That Hossa contract is ridiculous.

I dont see us picking up anyone this year.

I agree with you but it makes for a boring off season without some talk of getting someone new lol Ehrhoff was drafted by Dean and was rumored to be talked about coming here at the deadline. You have to think he would still be interested in him. Now will he sign a cheap one year deal you never know.

The only spots I see open is 3rd line LW (If King is not resigned) and #13 foward. (If Nolan gets traded.)

Seeing as the forward ranks in Manchester could be void of some veteran depth, I could see us signing one or two AHL vets who, if need be could be called upon should we suffer a rash of injuries during the season.

Otherwise, it looks to be a fairly uneventful FA period but I am fine with that.

King should be, must be, resigned.
Our LW with him signed are: Gaborik, Pearson, King, Clifford.

Pearson is penciled as our top6 LW but he is rookie with almost none experience. What would Kings do if for some reason he hits some slump, which is pretty realistic expectation (dreaded sophomore season), or he gets injured? Without King on roster Kings can tray moving up Clifford :shakehead or maybe Andy, both ill suited for top 6 role.
While King isn't top 6 winger he can fill that role much much better than any other player available.

Keeping King gives Kings much needed roster flexibility, he must be signed at least until current prospects can step in and take over his role-2 years minimum.

With Vey gone there is no reason to move Nolan either, he is tough kid with some experience(and two rings) on cheap contract. He is perfect #13/14 forward.

King regular season, penner playoffs?

King did pretty well in the 2012 playoffs. I was actually comparing his numbers to this year's run, and they are very comparable. I think for his size and his caphit, you definitely want to keep him on the team. He doesn't always WOW us with his play, but he is defensively responsible for the most part and has the size also. I remember that run of games he had with Kopi where he was potting some really awesome goals.

Quick, Carter and Richards have very reasonable contracts...especially considering how much they have meant to the team. You are going to see Kane/Toews making a ton more. I'm really looking for Richards to have a bounce back season next year.
