Shouldnt Buffalo make the playoff after next season if we draft Gauthier and Kasper ?

Skinner Thompson Olofsson
Cozens Gauthier Tuch
Quinn Kasper Peterka
Asplund Mittlestadt Girgensons

Samuelsson Dahlin
Power Jokiharju
Bryson fritzgerald

Add to this 3 more first rounders rosen the 3 first this summer and next summer first pick. After this trades free agents can be Done to bolster this group over the top . Seems close if They draft right and have some luck . Dont over pay any free agents long term so bishop trade is perfect . Seem like we have all pieces in place . Add to this maybe kane want to sign in Buffalo .

Skinner Thompson Kane
Cozens Gauthier Tuch
Quinn Kasper Peterka
Asplund Mittlestadt Olofsson
Girgensons

Shouldnt we winn a sc with this group without any problem if we get a ok goalie. Taking advantage of ecl contract . Sabres should winn their first sc within 10 years
I mean its not close to a lineup Id bet on over half the playoff teams this season

its a bunch of kids that people think have a high ceiling

just got my 10 yr award and I have heard this tale a few times now how every prospect will continue trending upwards, girgensons and foligno are untouchable future super stars, pysyk and mccabe are on the fast track to top pairing d men, etc

the defense looks like it could be a long term top 4, the offense you gotta really hope that they are better at developing this crop than they have been over the last 20 years

One thing about Kevyn Adams is he seems to not leak at all, so anything about Sabres comes from opposing teams, agents and players. Buffalo media are lazy and antagonistic towards the team and are getting almost zero scoops. No one had a sniff on the Bishop cap deal, and people who write about the team seem to be making a ton of assumptions.

It is frustrating for hard-core fans like me, but I honestly don't think we will be able to glean much about this off-season until Adams pulls the trigger on something.

As such, I'm working hard to NOT to prejudge this off-season.

Glaringly ridiculous?

Did you see the goaltenders they signed last summer?

What other ones should we have gotten?

The free agents who weren’t going to sign here?

Or the trade options that either didn’t exist, wouldn’t have been upgrades or didn’t make sense?

Some of you seem to think there is a starting goalie store we could have used to upgrade the position.

For everyone calling for the Sabres to do something aside from picking BPA, like picking based on the status of the NHL roster, take into account Jack Quinn.

The Sabres went into the 2020-2021 season with this on defense:

Dahlin - Jokiharju
McCabe - Ristolainen
Montour - Miller

4 RHD starting. That’s a workable right side, moving Ristolainen and rolling with the other 3.

Now imagine passing on Quinn and everyone else to take Kaiden Guhle, because he’s a LHD.

Quinn was the BPA on Adams’ board, and he picked him despite having Hall, Reinhart, Olofsson, and Skinner on the NHL roster.

Fast forward two years. Hall and Reinhart are gone, and so are every RHD except for Jokiharju. Quinn is the AHL rookie of the year but hasn’t played much in the NHL. Guhle is still in the WHL.

No one the Sabres pick in the 2022 draft is likely to be on the roster until the start of the 2024-25 season. Just take the BPA. Balance the NHL roster out via trades and free agency.

I have faith Adams will do the smart thing and just take the best player on his board.

I don't see the comparison as that similar tbh. Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson are a lot more projectable to be long term solid contributors. The entire defense minus Dahlin from the 2020 starting roster is entirely uninspiring (on both sides).

Quinn was also extremely raw, not taking hockey too seriously until like age 14 because he was into Lacrosse. Rossi was still the better player on that Ottawa team that year (by most scout's assessments) but Quinn was attractive as a gamble to take a huge step forward due to context. If KA was simply taking BPA into account at that draft we wouldn't have picked Quinn. I'm glad we did end up picking him now, but that's because hindsight is easy. Both will have great careers.

I’ll never get over people using a depth chart with Ristolainen and Miller as a comparison to Dahlin and Power.

Somehow I'm sure that positional necessity matters to Adams. He can take RD because he is BPA and also because he is RD.

i disagree on your depth argument.

when drafting top 20 you think nope in D+1, maybe in D+2, should be in NHL in D+3
players 21-45 you might see them in D+3, should be in D+4

some variations based system, situation, and depth. Players after after 45 you look at 5 yrs out.

at 2020 draft

Dahlin-Joki
Mccabe*-Risto**
Montour*-Miller**
* UFA in summer 21
**UFA in summer 22

Samuelson-Fitzgerald
Bryson-Lasksonen
Johnson

those players were not part of your long term plans. If you signed one it was a short term fill. You figure Samuelson would replace one of the players. bryson could as well.

buffalo void was in wingers who seemed to be scorers and shooters.

you do factor in your depth at position and look how to balance it without reaching. RD, Zd are the focus.

Maybe not - but in theory you only need to get one legit top 4 guy to push Bryson/Joker down to the bottom pair & Fitz down to #7/8.

This is why I'm so adamant about grabbing the best RHD available in next month's draft.

Somehow I'm sure that positional necessity matters to Adams. He can take RD because he is BPA and also because he is RD.

While RD is an area of concern, I don't agree with drafting based on our current depth charts.

A typical defense development is 2-4 years post draft until they make their NHL debut...and it can be 2 years more until they are a reliable top 4 D-man.

Buffalo will have several options to address D between now and whenever the best RHD at 9 will be ready.

Go BPA for the future, address depth chart issues with more immediate moves.

No, what I meant is that if he has two players on the table that they like equally and one winger or LD for example, and the second RD, he can take the RD.

Draft for talent and trade for need

Rossi was BPA to most of us. Quinn was BPA on the Sabres board. We assume he reached for Quinn. He didn’t. During on of the Embedded videos, he challenged the scouting staff to relook their rating based on potential.

Quinn was high than Rossi on some lists that year as well. Fans think Adams reached for Quinn over Rossi because we had them rated differently than the Sabres.

I’ll never get over people using a depth chart to think the Sabres should take a forward over Sergachev or McAvoy.

If the BPA on the board when the Sabres pick is actually a RHD, he should pick him. Odds are that it won’t happen that way.

Maybe in later rounds, but early on, you take BPA.

Rough ten years.. I'm trying personally to not imagine bad scenarios when things are consistently moving away mathematically but our trauma is still fight or flight.. I'm with.

Depending on a productive off season and real physical growth I could see Bryson on a great 3rd d pairin and I can see fitz and joki stepping up mentally and physically playing beyond what 2nd pairing d might add .. tean is better.. we can only sign top pairing w fading but doing it right and top 6 skill and personality

I see top end scenario that the giraffe becomes even better.. confident but still driven.. Cozens and Mitts will become their physical best and because of that and okposo diet and sabres staff guiding. Our 1 ,2c and 3c might just be ok for a pro club.

I do not believe KA will do it.( Signing other people's ready now players that the league knows their weakness. Etc) . Just goalie.. a former top pair d the take the pressure off the group would really help...As expressed by original poster.. No top d Letang player isn't coming here without MAF or other of top 5 goalie signed and the 6k / Anderson backup.. I believe in KA to come thru and pleasantly surprise us

GMs and scouts are trying to determine what these 17 year-olds *project to be* in 2-5 years.

Taking that into consideration, and knowing how much a roster will change during that timeframe, one sees that drafting players to fill *current* roster holes is hopelessly shortsighted.

Always, always, always BPA over positional need.

I remember a poster or two guaranteeing a cup when we had all those 1st round picks during the first tank.
If you look back at the players we've had on our roster and in our system over the last 10 years they actually could have been a good team with better coaching and a slight tweak to some of the GMing and if the Pegula's had more patience.

Lots of players that have spent time on our roster and struggled have gone on to be successful elsewhere.

Rough roster outline, didn't really take handedness or line combo into consideration (or egos... lol):

Kane Eichel Reinhart
Hall RoR Okposo
Foligno Johanssen Olofsson
Girgs Larsson Sheary
Hagel E-rod

xxx-xxx (no real top paring D)
McNabb Scandella
Montour Bogo
Kulikov

Lehner, Ulmark, Cal Pen, Halak

The only thing we really lacked was top pairing D, which could have been traded for/signed. Or maybe we end up drafting someone good with later first round picks than the ones we actually had. (Serghachev, McAvoy, Chyrchrun?)

For all of those that wanted to see a Cozens WC reuinion, we may just have a chance at that
