Anyone think Colorado could land Malkin if he is indeed pissed at PIT? I can def see the Sabres helping them clear cap

He said in interviews before the WC's that he wanted to play but the lack of contract would inhibit his participation.

It’s definitely smart. Imagine trying to negotiate a contract getting injured during a nation championship when you got injured during a season for your professional season.

I mean I don’t know your job, but let’s assume you’re a firefighter. Imagine getting hurt working for your city, having a few months of ineffectiveness, then come May you go compete in a competition for best US firefighter and get hurt again. Obviously the city you live in is gonna have a hard time giving you another contract

Yeah, outside of the grindy type of player (Nick Paul, etc).....I can't see us spending money on forward. Especially not big money on a top 6 guy......and even more specifically on a one-dimensional forward. That said, I wouldn't necessarily mind getting a bit dumb on a guy like Nick Paul....someone whose type we don't really have in the system, need going forward.....and is hard to otherwise get.

When you think of grindy, defensive guys we have on the roster or upcoming at forward.....it's Asplund, Girgensons and then what? Getting a little dumb on term and AAV I'm ok with on these types specifically.

Otherwise, I completely agree -- spend in net and on D.
Bloom might fit that description.

One idea I heard on a podcast recently (it may have been Joe & Lance on Maintenance Day) was seeing if Minnesota were open to moving Marcus Foligno given their cap crunch.

:dunno:

Nick Paul is the EXACT guy i would personally target if we're looking at forward additions.

Kasper isn't that far behind Fiala as a prospects. A mid first is really good this year.
I think the odds of Kasper, or any player picked at 16, becoming a player of FIala's caliber are too low to be worth waiting the 4-5 years minimum that would take to manifest.

I also don't think there's a chance Kasper is there at 16.

To each their own. Fiala is worlds better than Olofsson at basically every facet of the game and fits our age group.

how exactly are you measuring Fiala dominance?

a player drafted at 16 will not take 5 years.

top 20 forward generally follow this

D+1 no NHL
D+2 some NHL. If they are CHL players they might be kept the full season, otherwise they are AHL or they go back to europe
D+3 NHL

thrn they is the factor of production per salary $

Dude. And that D+3 year they generally aren’t all the productive, and certainly not at Fiala’s level.

I wouldn’t do that trade either (for reasons other than value), but of course it would take 4-5 years for a mid-first player to reach his level….and that would be unlikely

I'd float Olofsson+16 for Fiala. It gives the Wild cap relief and a replacement for Fiala. Then give Fiala 7 x $9M.

But I know Adams wouldn't even entertain the idea.

Neither would Guerin. The Wild don't have a need for more left shot wingers, especially an arbitration eligible one that is in need of a new contract. The only reason they're trading Fiala is to clear cap space.

Considereng the perceived slow approach for the upcoming year, 4-5 years is probably the time frame for us to become a legit playoff team.
My guess is bottom 10 next season, then a couple of years on the bubble.

I hope that Granato continues to get the team to overperform, accelerating the timeline.

It's an interesting thought, though. We need to keep in mind that Adams, as a GM, needs to put in place an organizational strategy that keeps the sabres competitive. With so many high picks, he needs to think longer term on some of them, and there is nothing wrong with getting a player that doesn't slot into a pro role for 3-4 years down the road.

Olofsson has essentially no value for MN. His projected 4-5M cap hit is far too expensive given what their needs are.

What is gold to MN right now would be an NHL ready player on their ELC. MN is going to want cost controlled assets, ELC assets (or about to being ELC assets).

If I am MN, I'm asking for Peterka/Quinn + one of Mittelstadt/Joker with full 50% retention.

Obviously that deal doesn't make sense for us, however.

I still am poking around Dumba to see if they want to get something done. Joker with retention + one of our 1sts for Dumba could make some sense.

Seeing other teams starting to filter signings into the news prior to the start of the SCF. Tynan one was one of the guys I was hoping might get a deal as the 14th forward. He's a high-quality playmaking forward at the AHL level, would've been a good fit for 1C in Rochester.

Someday we'll bring Andrew Poturalski home to WNY.

Keeping to that theme, I also like the idea of bringing back Justin Bailey.

Both as Roch guys / injury call ups.

I wouldn’t make any of those deals. I see zero reason to gut the youngsters to sign good players to exorbitant contracts. I’d keep Jokiharju and 28 over a rental of Dumba seeing as he’d likely look for a 7mil deal in the off-season which won’t fit well with Dahlin and Power’s eventual mega contracts. I don’t want 3 Dman making 21+ mil as we’d fall into SJS’s trap essentially.

Fiala wants way to much to be a good target. He’s a winger and more or less a 2nd liner on a great team; they don’t make 8.5mil

Hometown bias, but I really thought bailey wasn't far from having an nhl career

The organization seemed to not have the best development those years, although I was never a big fan of some of the other guys that fizzled (guhle, baptiste, cornel, karabacek)
