Wouldn't that impact his trade value? I can see him adding value if we could still use him as a hitter (DH) but he wouldn't even do that regularly.
It might but if we’re using him that shouldn’t be a concern. We could also rest realmutto more. We could give him dh days and stuff like that to help keep stronger longer. All I’m saying is that it’s an option.

had I read further I would have multi quoted. Agreed it makes the most sense to move Jansen I’m just saying it doesn’t have to be him. It could be Kirk instead.

as for the Brantley and Springer rumour I could see us then visiting the reds with a Jansen and Lourdes combo for some starting pitching. Although that’s more than we should need to pay anyone. I can’t see the jays spending 65 ish million on new position players this year though. But if they sign two outfielders one of ours is on his way out for sure. If not two.

I wonder if this takes us out of the Brad Hand running. Rumors were floating that we had interest earlier this offseason. Would be nice to add a lefty.

Nice to see us get someone and not be the runner up. Hopefully more signings soon.

many details on the term/money?

No mention of the contract yet. I am guessing it is for one or two years.

Kirby Yates reportedly set to sign with Blue Jays - The San Diego Union-Tribune

The terms of Yates’ deal with Toronto were not yet known, but the Padres’ offer was said to be incentive-laden and well below what the market was dictating for Yates, whose 2020 season ended after surgery to remove bone chips in his throwing elbow. Sources told the Union-Tribune the Padres and Yates’ camp never came close to an agreement.

Originally drafted by the Red Sox in 2005 out of high school, Yates’ path to professional baseball was ultimately blocked by Tommy John surgery. He resurfaced four years later with the Tampa Bay Rays as an undrafted free agent, debuted in 2014 and bounced from the Rays to the Yankees to the Angels before the Padres claimed him in April 2017.

Given an opportunity in the Padres bullpen, Yates and his emerging split-finger fastball thrived. He finished that year with a 3.72 ERA, posted a 2.14 ERA over 63 innings the following year and was the next-man-up in the bullpen after the Padres traded away another waiver claim in closer Brad Hand.

In 2019, Yates led the majors with 41 saves in 44 chances — for a last-place team, no less — and set career-bests in ERA (1.19), WHIP (0.89), strikeouts per nine innings (14.98, also a franchise record for a reliever), strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.77), walks per nine innings (1.9) and ERA-plus (354).

He also earned his first trip to the All-Star Game, finished ninth in NL Cy Young voting and was named to the inaugural All-MLB team. He was poised to build on that in 2020 heading into his last year before free agency.

But Yates was shaky in his six games following the delayed start to 2020, allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings and had bone chips in his right elbow end his season in mid-August.

In four seasons in San Diego, Yates was 9-14 with a 2.55 ERA and 286 strikeouts in 183 2/3 innings.

What Yates brings to Toronto

Dennis Lin, Padres beat writer: Before the bone chips derailed his 2020 season, Yates had emerged as one of the game's top relievers. His splitter, the pitch that saved his career, is often unhittable. His fastball tops out in the mid-90s, but he commands it well, which only enhances the splitter. Yates is 33 now, but because he does not rely on velocity, he could age better than some of his peers — assuming, of course, he regains full health.

Can Yates reach pre-injury form?

Lin: His surgery was arthroscopic and, thus, relatively minor in nature. Yates, who underwent Tommy John surgery in college, had pitched for years without major arm trouble. Since his latest operation, he has received a positive prognosis: Yates has said Dr. Keith Meister, who performed the surgery, "really liked the way my elbow looked as a whole." So, it appears Yates has a clear path to an effective return. Whether he recaptures his 2019 form remains to be seen. Relievers are inherently volatile, and any surgery, even a minor one, would seem to add to that volatility.

How does having Yates affect the rest of the Blue Jays bullpen?

Kaitlyn McGrath, Blue Jays beat writer: Between 2018-19, Yates was the best reliever in baseball and, if healthy, he’s a legit weapon for the Blue Jays bullpen. After the departure of former closer Ken Giles and Anthony Bass in free agency, Toronto lacked many high-leverage options outside of Rafael Dolis and Jordan Romano. Yates brings plenty of closing experience and should fill the team's vacant closer role. Lining him up after Dolis and Romano gives the Blue Jays’ bullpen a solid back-end to finish off games.

If the Yanks can load up on all former closers I don't see why we can't do the same. Go grab Hand

Lots of insiders calling this a great pick-up. At some point one of them should find out the actual details on the deal to know for sure, ha. I would like to know the terms.

Perhaps the fact have not heard anything means an incentive based 1 year deal?

40 man is now full with Yates I believe...which means we get the excitement of what garbage we punt for new players now!
Depending on how many moves are made and what positions they play - Jacob Waguespack, Shun Yamaguchi, Jonathan Davis, and Derek Fisher... come on down!
