I don't get why we need power off the bench. The goal of the ph is to get on base. If these guys can do that reasonably well then their doing their job. We all love the long ball but we'll see enough of that with our regulars. We have a nice bench especially for all the NL games we're gonna play. I'd rather a guy that can get on base over a guy that'll hit the odd hr off the bench but strike out or pop out for most of the rest of the at bats.

I think Cooper fills both those rolls. He wont hit many HR but he hits for average and hit alot of doubles.
Tho right now it seems like the guy we just claimed might grab the last bench spot.

I suppose youre right, think the average is 77 or something which is still a very fast knuckleball. Wakefield used to throw 68-70 iirc.

According to Pitchfx, Wakefield averaged about 66mph on his knuckle from 06-11, but it actually had extreme velosities at 78mph and 54mph.

Last year Dickey averaged 77, but his extremes were 83 and 66. That said, he's averaged 59 to 80 since he started throwing it, and hit 53 and 83 in 2010.

Definitely different velosities, but perhaps not as different as the averages say.

Cooper could be that guy. He doesn't have HR power put he has doubles power and hits for average. Enough to clear the bases with this team speed. His bat is similar to Lyle Overbay when he was good.

Can't say I ever really understood that. I suppose it's the difference between a pure gap hitter and a potential HR threat, but I always tended to think that if you could hit doubles with any consistency, you should also have enough food contact to knock a few out.

Anyway, Cooper was most likely the 4th guy on the bench before today's dumpster diving expedition. If Canzler can continue to show well vs lefties in ST, it's a huge bonus for the Jays at a bargain price (essentially nothing), and also gives Buffalo a legit presence at 1B in Cooper. Win-win.

Finally one makes it to Buffalo. One out of 4 not bad.

and maybe the best of the bunch. I know there was one I was really hoping would get through of the other waiver claims. Can't remember who off hand though

Yeah but if I remember correctly Cooper was hitting better when he was playing everyday. I think his average started to drop when he was getting spot starts. I'm not sure if he'd be a very good option off the bench but I know what you mean. I do very much like Cooper and I just don't see how he'll ever get an everyday job in the bigs. He's a great depth guy though.

Im not sure if they did. I thought he had an option left.

They didn't send him down, they took him off the 40 man roster and to do that, he has to clear waivers which he did. If he had an option left, Jays could just send him down (that would happen once season begins) so they wouldn't have to make this move and risk exposing him to the waivers. Astros would keep him too if he had an option left.

Wow Dave Bush was a second rounder..Holy crap was our scouting staff piss poor...Ricciardi era yikes.. Just one reason why were in such bad shape back then.

He had a couple of good seasons in the majors... not a bad pick at all. Especially considering the attrition rate for MLB prospects.

IIRC he was the key piece going to the Brewers in the Overbay trade.

He was and Overbay was garbage.

But ya, mlb picks aren't like nhl picks. For example, Lincecum got drafted in the 48th round in 2003, 2005 42nd rounder then the next year went 10th overall

Haha the Overbay move was pretty highly touted. He led the league in doubles with an 860 ops in milwaukee. Just didn't pan out... neither did Dave Bush LOL.

Exactly. Overbay was never a big power guy but he hit alot of doubles and had an excellent OBP. Then he got hurt and was never the same again.

As for Bush He was better than most #5 starters for a while.

I decided to be a conformist and get a Reyes Jersey.

Seen on Snet that the Jays are looking at Soriano?

Haha welcome to the group. I'm going Reyes aswell.

Current collection: Lind, Wells, Romero, and a Snider jersey-tshirt. Yeah I've got some rotten luck lol.

Some reporter said the BlueJays could be a "sleeper" in terms of getting Soriano. So basically speculation only. I'd welcome that addition though for sure.

He finished 20th in MVP voting last season. What is with writers giving Yankees players an MVP vote? Not as bad as Ibanez getting one, but still...

edit: Or Alfonso?

I knew that ;) I just didn't realize he was such a high pick.

I apologize if this has been covered to death, but can someone give me the story on Storey? His numbers and potential don't suggest that he'd be put on waivers and then optioned. I haven't watched him play, and know little about him. His situation just strikes me as odd.

nice additions by AA today, dave bush welcome back

anyways some draft talk

guys i would like to get if avaliable, anyone of them ill be happy

bryant, i doubt he gets past red sox, power potential, hit for average, elite potential

stewart, health issues because he is diabetic, but i really like his upside as a big league pitcher

trey ball, 2 way upside, as a pitcher and hitter, could be great in either of those 2 positions

Reese McGuire, good all around catcher, above average power potential, calls a good game, good hitting skills, gives a great effort every game

any of these players ill be happy, but we should still get a blue chipper with our pick, assuming everything goes well
