No they don't. The Closer situation is far from a sure thing for example/

Well if we're referring to Toronto's closer situation, rather than the previous discussion talking about "what closer is available that is a sure thing in Game 7 of the WS" yadayadayada crap, then there's pretty much one answer; Janssen has the closer's job going into spring training, and they'll assess it there whether or not him and Santos get the job.

Swisher would be perfect for 1b/dh he might even wanna come here cheep to win.

Swisher would be awesome, and a little known fact about Swisher is that his sister-in-law is Canadian and his family has been to her cottage in Muskoka several times, but it's tough because of the baseball season calendar. He said it in an interview last year when asked where he likes to relax.

Problem for us is that he's a free agent, AA's moves now appear to be reduced to trades where salaries can be shuffled around, and Swisher is hot on the radar of the Indians. They're meeting with him again and seem to be the front-runners.

He'd be a perfect addition, no doubt.

1 home run. Wooooow.

Also what's this I keep hearing about a $140 million cap limit? Is this the internal cap or is this before we go into luxury taxes? I still think the Jays need a number 5 1B/DH hitter and they need to demote Lind or trade him.

It could just be a smokescreen to get AA to have the Mets accept a somewhat albatross contract. He could've just feigned ignorance.

A catchers value isn't based on how many home runs they can hit. :shakehead. AA and the jays have payroll parameters they work within and AA has essentially reached that limit for this year anyway. They do not need to demote Lind especially with the players they added ahead of him. He's essentially playing for his career this year. But that doesn't mean he'll be demoted or waived. Maybe and it's a big maybe if at the deadline the jays are what they could be and Lind is having a terrible year you may see AA add a bat to replace him then but I wouldn't count on it at this point.

For people asking about league caps, isn't the luxury tax minimum $100M?

If our salary budget is $140, we should still have about $15M-$20M to work with. Makes me wonder if there might be large long-term deals in the works for Lawrie and Arencibia.

I'm also a little surprised about Buck being a salary dump. I saw it as more that we only have room for 2 catchers on the pro roster and we needed Thole to catch Dickey, so Buck had to be moved. The Mets probably just agreed to take him so we didn't lose him on waivers or have to deal with trading him for a nothing prospect. It's from the horses mouth (AA), so I guess it must be true, but I still find that to be strange, especially considering the amount of salary budget space we supposedly have left.

Luxury tax threshold for last season was $178 million.

This I think is a pretty good point. AA probably saw Thole as a must have in the Dickey trade since he can catch the knuckleball and saw that he was still good enough to get other starts. If Buck didn't go to the Mets in the trade people would probably start thinking AA had something else up his sleeve and everyone would probably be calling for Buck to be traded to relieve has salary, much like some already were. Adding an additional 5m or so payroll I don't think is out of the realm of possibilities, preferably if that happens it is partnered with trading Lind to get another higher caliber player because I am greedy :D

It will be awesome to be be on Fox Saturday's or Sunday night baseball. You would have to think we'll get a few games on U.S National T.V with so much name power. Have we ever been on Sunday Night Baseball? I miss Dan Shulman

What happens to Jessy litch? he makes 1mil? that's a lot of money

Litsch is a free agent, according to baseball-reference:

October 10, 2012: Granted Free Agency.

And for the record, Hutchison and Drabek are pre-arb FAs right now. I'm not sure if we need to sign them by opening day or anything to keep their rights, but they'll probably not be getting much money anyway.

Ah. I guess it goes by the average league salary or something? I'm pretty sure the first year of the new CBA with the luxury tax was $100M.

Quite a lot in the 80s and 90s, if I recall.

I hope if we do, we don't lose the local broadcasts. I'd still prefer to watch RSN and, more importantly, listen to Jerry and co on the radio instead of having to deal with the okay, but not ours, American broadcasts.

I forgot that he refused assignment and elected free agency. Forget about my other post than.

Yeah but Dan Shulman is Canadian!

I'd agree Janssen has the job right now, but I also believe if he struggles even a bit in ST while Santos thrives that can change before opening day. After all Santos was acquired to be the closer and Janssen only acquired the role because of Santos being injured.

The question is how much is he looking for and can we move adam lind for more cap

I think moving Lind out if we get Swisher misses the point. We need a power bat for the bench, IMO. If we can't get Swisher and still keep within our salary, I don't think it's worth it.

I really don't like a bench of Davis, Bonifacio/Izturis, Cooper/Sierra/Gose and the backup catcher. Where's the bat? :help:

Not really relying on him... he'd be a bottom of the order hitter.

Still, when you've assembled the beauty that is the Jays of this upcoming year, one weak spot can hurt. Couple Lind with JPA who can't hit for average and potentially Bonifacio who's only an 'okay' hitter and that's a third of the lineup that isn't particularly strong - not that any team has a 1-9 that's dynamite, but we're soooo close lol.

Here's an article on "50 things to know about R.A. Dickey", he is one guy who has not had an easy road to where he is today, but someone that is great for many many people to look up to. Here are some of the more eye opening highlights on the list:

17. His acclaimed autobiography, Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball, came out this year.

18. The book revealed that he was sexually abused by his female babysitter, and by a 17-year-old boy when he was 8. The events occurred during the same summer in 1983.

19. He grew up in relative poverty.

20. His parents divorced when he was young, and his dad was largely absent during his upbringing.

21. His mom would take him to bars when he was 5, and drink till closing time.

22. Dickey abstains from alcohol.

23. As a teenager, he sometimes slept in abandoned warehouses.

24. He considered suicide after cheating on his wife, which almost ended his marriage.
