In hockey, I would compare this to trading lets say, Morgan Rielly for Martin St. Louis. Sure, St. Louis will potentially help you a lot in the short term, but Rielly projects to be a long term great player.

The only difference is the Leafs arent close or one move away from being a legit contender.

Unknown? Maybe if this was a 20 year old kid in A ball. He is major league ready and projects to be a much better and complete player than JP.

Suddenly he does after we saw JP in the bigs for a couple of seasons, but back when JP was tearing up the PCL people were thinking he is going to be a great catcher too.

It's not hard to understand why TDA is valued more now, but it just seems like when a young player comes into the bigs and not make a significant impact right away that his potential disappears.

Mets are rebuilding and Wheeler is a better prospect then d'Arnaud.

Why would they deal him?

I don't believe so at ALL.

TDA is the best catcher in the minors right now, none better. I think Wheeler projects to be a 1-2, leaning heavily more on the number 2 side.

At this position, TDA has the higher value.

Most scouts didnt project him into a great catcher tho.
His scouting report back then was basically bang on.

Lots of power.
Will hit for low AVG.
Cant take a walk.
Shaky defense.

After the Marlins trade the Jays are now in a much different position than the Leafs.

While the Leafs likely wouldn't make that deal, I could see a contending team be more than willing to trade a piece like Rielly for Martin St.Louis.

You might not believe so but scouts who do this for a living do.......

Not to mention we get a draft pick if he leaves after a good season too.

my concern in that scenario is if a team like the cubs who are destined to be basement dwellers sign him we'll get stuck with a 2nd rounder.

Being the best catcher in the minors isn't really all that significant considering his competitors are not all that note-worthy, aside from Zunino.

I thought he was pretty well known for his defense. In fact, wasn't that his calling card before his offense blossomed?

It just shows how much of a joke the Mets have been the past few years. They can't scout or draft worth a crap. D'Arnaud is considered the best cather in the minors for a reason.

JPA was never rated as highly as TDA. There were alwas questions about his D where with TDA it is looked at as a +.

JPA nevr broke the top 20 in MLB prospects where TDA will be well within the top 10.

Just because some people overrated JPA doesn't mean TDA must be too.

Last week everyone loved TDA now everyone is talking him down.

I really wonder how TDA getting injured again this season effected this decision.

Hes now had a bad back injury and also a knee injury and he hasnt even played a ML game yet.

I wonder if they arent sold he can holdup at the C position longterm.

Well I guess at the very least we still have AJ Jiminez in the system who has good upside.

You can't compare a hockey trade to a baseball trade. I think there is slightly more risk to baseball prospects than hockey ones. Most first round pick in hockey should make it into the NHL, whereas mlb first rounders may not. Just my two cents

Stop comparing baseball to hockey, the entire make-up and systems of each game are different.

it's a hockey forum and a lot of people are hockey fans first and foremost, and aren't as familiar with the mlb players. I know many asked for the hockey "equivalent" of the Miami deal.

And I know the Leafs aren't in the same position as the jays, i should have wrote that with my post
