That is the basic idea but TDA is a better prospect than Reiley.

Not by a whole lot, though, is 4-5 years older and baseball prospects have more bust potential. Not saying D'Arnaud will, just pointing it out.

So I think the concept is about as close as you can get for a casual baseball fan who watches hockey to understand

Yup. I can tell you he tore up the most hitter friendly minor league in the world while posting a completely unsustainable BABIP. Not to mention he's the top catching prospect compared to a bunch of crap since the others who are near his talent level have already graduated.

Ahhh you know more about baseball than nearly every baseball scout in the world.

Depends on the ceiling. And TDA's is extremely high right now.

It's not like RA Dickey is 28. He's 38.

I understand "going for it" which AA is clearly doing, but prospects like TDA don't come around too too often.

Granted but Niekro, Hough and Candiotti all played well into their forties with Niekro almost 50. Generally, knuckleballers don't have the problems with their arms that power pitchers have, allowing them to extend their careers. Wakefield just retired and he's 46. That being said I still wouldn't like TDA to be in this deal, I'd prefer if JPA was included in his spot.

Convienant you left out was the MVP of the eastern league which many consider the most competitive and talented league in the minors.

But I can see that Dickey is 38 years old and if you are giving away your best prospect for a chance that he makes you a World Series contender.

If I'm trading D'Arnaud, its going to be for someone that has more years available than someone who is likely signing his last contract for 2 years.

As has been mentioned knuckleballers can last longer

Believe me though, I'd be pissed doing it. Don't want to give him up.

TDA is older, much so but baseball players are given much more time to develop.

Kadri at 21 is old for a prospect and many are calling him a bust.
Gose at 22 is considered extremely young with tons of time to still develop.

Even though Wakefield was pitching into his mid 40's, he wasn't putting up huge numbers. You could basically have a young prospect do what he did. 150 innings and an ERA over 5.

And do you mean stuff like him putting up better numbers in the minors than last years mvp Buster Posey did at the same age?

Which is a guy he is compared to. His defence in itself is very valuable. If the bat follows him...

Looking at a minor league player BABIP is about the useless thing you can, especially hitters, since they have a better control of it. It also isn't BABIP if you are crushing balls left and right.

d'Arnaud tore up AA as well.

Niekro was great even into his late 40s but Wakefeild and Candiotti were declining past Dickeys current age.

Hey, in 1992, the Jays traded a future MVP to rent David Cone for four months. I've never heard anyone complain.

He's plenty good. I'd love to keep him, but this isn't about whether or not he is total ****...it's about whether him being involved ought to be a deal breaker when the Cy Young award winner is coming back. I don't think he has proven that he is so good that we can turn down this opportunity flat out.

My point was Rielly can likely play with the Leafs longer because he gets brought up younger. Baseball and hockey are completely different kinds of leagues. It's tough to compare prospects on different sports especially these 2.

JP won the PCL MVP award in 2010, and so what? There was this same hype about JP before he arrived, if I recall correctly. That has not translated to much in the bigs just yet. It does not look like people are high on him anymore. I say roll the dice. Trade TDA for Dickey. TDA can very well turn out to be another JP.

No there was nowhere close to this hype with JPA.

JPA was nowhere close to a top 10 prospect leaguewide.

I know what you mean and agree with you. Just pointing some things out.
