Sign Senga, Rodon, trade for Reynolds and call it an off season.
I’d be shocked and thrilled if we added two pitchers of that calibre.

I’d be happy with one of them plus either a Varsho or Nootbar. There would probably be some money left over for a bench piece or two and maybe even another depth starter.

Having Berrios as your #5 starter would be beyond championship calibre if Rodon's health holds up. With Reynolds you have 3 outfielders who can hit for average with 2 of them having plus power. We'd become true world series contenders instantly.

Get 2 starters and the decent players available in free agent may sign cheaper with you (Bellinger, Gallo, Brantley, Kiermaier, Conforto etc.)

Dream scenario:

Sign Rodon
Sign Nimmo
Sign Matt Moore or Andrew Chafin
Trade Jansen and Gurriel for a good prospect, or two.
Flip those prospects + any prospect not named Tiedemann or Moreno for Reynolds or just sign Bellinger.
**Bonus: if we can get him for cheap/reasonable Varsho from Arizona would be the ultimate bench piece (lefty power bat, elite CF defense, solid behind the plate, given our two catchers will usually be in the lineup.)**

Lineup:

Springer RF
Nimmo CF
Vlad 1B
Kirk DH
Reynolds LF/Bellinger
Bo SS
Chapman 3B
Moreno C
Espinal 2B

Varsho C/CF/LF/RF
Lopez 2B/LF or Merrifield 2B/LF
Biggio LF/2B/1B

Rotation:

Gausman
Rodon
Manoah
Berrios
Kikuchi

Tiedemann
Pearson
White

Bullpen:

Romano
Bednar
Swanson
Moore/Chafin
Mayza
Garcia
Bass
Cimber

Pop
Merryweather

Then why were they going after Gibson?

I would also be surprised if the Jays get two starters personally. Not unless they can find a taker for Kikuchi. They've invested a lot into him and White (by trading Frasso). Plus Ryu, who may not be out all year? With the other needs they have... It may be better to go after better than to fill more holes. Jays will ultimately need some prospects to step up.

Varsho isn’t some bench piece you could get for cheap. He’s one of the most valuable outfielders in the game with control (8th in outfielder FWAR) and would come at the cost of Tiedemann+, Moreno or Kirk + so you would be starting him everyday.

Also the 4 players you have us adding in free agency would cost around 70 m a year which would put us over the luxury tax I believe.

"I don't know" probably isn't the answer you want to hear from the guy who should probably have a plan B if his franchise player peaces out.

He apparently did an interview on WFAN where he said him and Steinbrenner have a bunch of deals/offers on hold as they try and figure out what Judge does. I imagine this is what's also going to hold up the market.

Still not a good look.

In more light news, Joe Musgrove is now the record holder for what might be the most pointless record in baseball; fastest pitch thrown on the Antarctic continent.

Some researcher/scientist is likely punching the air realizing they could have had that record...if they knew it existed.

If the Jays could sign Correa (and I'm assuming Toronto could be in the mix for him) I'd be happy to trade Bichette for Reynolds.

Fun Fact: Bryan Reynolds played last season through an oblique injury. As a result, everything speed related was significantly worse than the year before (making him look like the worst CF in baseball when he's actually decent at it).

I wonder what the upper limit of our payroll is...

If we moved assets for Reynolds, signed Bellinger to a one-year prove it deal, signed Senga/Heaney and traded for Hendriks, for example, it would dramatically fix the biggest holes.

I believe Shi Davidi on the FAN a couple days ago speculated they have around 30 million or so to play with after trading Hernandez and non tendering some guys.

Makes sense, they can fill their holes with roughly that much.

Well, if one were to believe the reports, the Jays were very much in the mix for Verlander, so they had zero qualms about adding upwards of $40 million to the payroll.

I don't think they have a hard limit on what they can spend.

They have 30 million ish, maybe a bit more until they reach the Tax threshold. They can probably go over but since there are multiple penalties if they do(extra money paid, more comp picks given up, worse comp picks received, less IFA money) it would likely have to be fairly enticing to do so.

According to Sportrac (Toronto Blue Jays 2023 Salaries Payroll), their estimate is 33M

Also, I don't think Kikuchi is as unmovable as some. Given his 10M salary (and the silly money people are getting), he'd be a net positive for a team with a pitcher's park. (He actually adds 12M for tax purposes)

Also, I don't know if it was mentioned here yet, but Verlander's deal has a vesting option for a 3rd year. I'm guessing that the 3rd year was the deal breaker for the Jays.

Could also be bumped up higher if the Jays end up moving some more arbitration guys too: Jansen being the most obvious, but not totally unlikely that a reliever (even if it is some of the cheaper guys like Thornton/Richards) or even a Biggio/Espinal are moved to fill other needs.

Jansen estimated at 3.7 mill. Biggio at 2.6. Espinal at 2.1. Richards at 1.5 and Thornton at 1.1.

Correa is going to end up going to do the Dodgers so no need to worry.

Probably will be a quiet day. If Cashman is to be believed, the impending Judge decision is blocking actual stuff from happening since the Yankees allegedly have "a handful" of offers/trades/whatever on hold as they wait.
